Is there a video of Collette 'rolling it' out in the wild?

Not my favourite personality, RIP nevertheless.

In fact, it goes further than that. The Late Late Show started with Gay back in 1962. It was definitely a rite of passage by the end of the 1960s when Ireland was a 1 TV Channel Land, as it was for the 1970s. Originally, the Late Late Show was on Saturday nights. It switched to Fridays during the '80s.
A rite of passage for gombeens in the audience who wanted at wave at the camera. Not unlike the muck savages standing behind Marty at the end of the matches. Then they phone home to make sure that Mammy sees them on d'telly

Look at what / who replaced him on the late late show! Just look!!! I’m Talking about the bean poll!

Whether you liked his presenting style or not it cannot be argued that he was miles ahead of the likes of Kenny and Tubridy in term of every aspect of presenting a tv show. He made an enormous contribution to entertainment, the media and broadcasting in general.

I always have the nagging suspicion that deep down he resented the fact he was stuck in RTE and in Ireland.

He would have been far more at home with Wogan in the BBC with their neutral accents, ass kissing and doffing their caps to the British Establishment like a good Paddy who knows his place.

I thought he was a bit of a dick to Barry McGuigan in an interview he done with him other than that he was grand.

Have to laugh at the title of the Gerry Adams interview on youtube; "The Late Late Show Gerry Adams ambushed by 6 Freestaters 1994.FULL VERSION."

First they came for the socialists...

He had his chance in England but was too windy to take it in case he lost his Communion money. A Yes man who was afraid to ask RT.E. for a rise

A Pat Kenny interview is basically Kenny researching all he knows about the guest/topic and reciting it back for the guest to agree with him.

"Oh Pat you are such a clever boy."

Kenny is basically the class swot who loves to show off.

Yep. My point about the 80s is he was practically reaching into every single household in Ireland. Something that wasn't possible in the 60's/70s (rural ireland tv ownership).

just like his high heel wearing, dyed rug hair friend Bono

It's hard to believe it's been 20 years since they bought him an expensive motorbike as a present live on air. As if we didn't give him enough.

yes and then for some bizarre reason he was given the head role in road safety ireland ?

    ???Annie Murphy,

Yes that wasn't good, but do you realise how many topics he brought onto the LLS that good old catholic Ireland did not want to touch ?

I think his personal friendship with the like of Casey and O'Leary may have coloured his opinion and it showed in that interview.

But he helped drag Ireland into the 20th century.

Hell if you are old enough you would have heard the comment that the LLS was responsible for all the sex, etc in Ireland.

He had chance to work overseas and AFAIK did bits in US but he chose to stay in Ireland.

Don't forget RTE from the 60s produced not alone Wogan, but some other brilliant long running top broadcasters in the UK like Eamon Andrews.

I am not allowed discuss …

I'm going to put him on ignore now, obviously the IRA fanboys are still arse sore after Gerry had his ass handed to him.

I like his biographer saying that he was such a good interviewer because he was quite gossipy. Makes sense.

This Boyzone clip remains my favourite LLS moment:

    Lot of truth in that.

    Certainly ate him up.

Fantastically talented at what he did though.

It never ceases to amaze me on RIP threads how people cannot seem to judge a whole life, the good and the bad and the things a person might be proud of or embarrassed about.

His show peaked at close to a million listeners day in, day out, week in, week out.

His contribution was immense even if you didn't agree with some of it, or didn't like the man.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,547 ✭✭✭Agricola

Sad news. Gay was a master at the art of the interview. And you only really realize that when you watch lesser mortals try to fill his shoes.
He could have fitted in on any chatshow anywhere in the world and would have cleaned up doing so. Astute, quick witted and very capable with light entertainment, emotionally intelligent and having genuine empathy for the tragedies, and more than adept at politics and current affairs. A true all rounder, the kind which doesn't come along very often. Outside of Ireland he'll be unknown, but he belongs up there with all the great broadcasters on either side of the pond.

    RIP

Heard the news earlier this afternoon. The end of an era really. I hope he wasn't in any pain at the end - I knew, as most others did, that was in ill health the past few years.

Gay Byrne WAS the Late Late Show and was a colossus in Irish broadcasting. We will not see his like again.

    RIP Gaybo.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,180 ✭✭✭Declan A Walsh

Gay Byrne hosted a pilot for a chat show in Philadelphia. The American station concerned tried to tempt him, but he was essentially a homebird.

Don't forget that Gay Byrne hosted The Rose of Tralee, amongst other annual events. He was omnipresent between the tv and radio at one stage! It was a mark of his broadcasting talent and reliability.

Absolutely. Himself and Wogan were part of that say nothing obedient Catholic 'Blue Shirt' middle class born not long after independence who hated Irishness and would have much preferred to be on the other side of the pond. I am also looking at you Bob Geldof.

But having said that his contribution to Irish TV and tackling societal issues was second to none.

    Wrong on all counts.
He said far more than most in public including you.
Was from a working class Guinness background.
No evidence he was FG supporter unless you have proof?

I'd class him as working class who pulled himself up by the bootstraps and good luck to him. He certainly can't be classed as someone who got the job through nepotism unlike many in RTE today.

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,230 ✭✭✭MOR316

    RIP

But, that appearance by Adams on the show. I have no idea what some of you were watching but, there was no "lost boy" look on his face.
Gerry Adams mopped the floor with them all that night, to the point where the panel let their emotions get the better of them

    Panel: "You're a snide man"
    Gerry Adams: "I'm not snide :D "

Wow, I knew he was ill and getting on in years, but still I was surprised. Whatever people may think of him he was absolutely an Irish cultural icon. RIP.

That Late Late where he gave P Flynn enough rope to hang himself with was masterful. He was on a different level compared to who we have today.

I remember that Gerry Adams interview when it was on and the general consensus from the adults in my life at the time was that Gay Byrne went for the jugular but Adams went all Mohammed Ali on his ass and Gaybo made a bit of a dick of himself.

I must watch it myself tonight as I have not seen it in full.

I was only about 13 or 14 when that interview was broadcast, but I remember thinking how absolutely horrible and condescending he was to her.
    I never liked him.
The amount of people fawning over him here is unbelievable.

i even got a warning for my opinion !

The Late Late Toy Show was a staple of my youth. Him in his cardigan, having a ball with the kids, it was infectious.

And U2 giving him a Harley Davidson on his last show.

There really won't be another one like him. Rest in Peace.

Off one interview? You were coming in near the end of his time, almost 40 years of it. Imagine the effect of that kind of show in the 60s and 70s, even the 80s? He was also excellent on radio.

It's true that there seems to be a lot of focus on two particular interviews out of thousands. Topics:

    1 The Catholic Church, and
    2. Irish Republicanism.

Can't for the life of me understand why both those 'nothing to see here' uncontroversial safe topics produced such comment. It's like slagging off the Andrex Puppy.

Most of the posters on this forum would have no experience of growing up with the Late Late Show in 2 tv channel Ireland. Hard to imagine it now, no wifi, and the tv shutting down at midnight. That was when he was at his best.

It's unfair judging Byrne for the last 10 years or so of his broadcasts, he was an old man by then and surrounded by sycophants.

If nothing else, the fact he had such a high profile media career in those decades when casual racism, misogyny and sexual harassment were normal in society, and came out scandal free with not even a whisper of impropriety, has to be a measure of a good man.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,203 ✭✭✭partyguinness

The LLS died when Gay Byrne left it. It was a serious current affairs programme with some light entertainment thrown in.

Pat Kenny just turned it into the Pat Kenny show of vacuous Z Celebrity waffle.
