Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

    This is ecobrite coal,this was left after 2 fires,I usually use superterm,but said I try a couple bags of this,anyone any idea why it's not hiring to ash

    They look like they weren't burned.
    I used a ton of Ecobrite last year and they turned to ash no problem, and gave great heat.
    Do you open up your stove to get it going and burning well and then turn down the air supply?

    lads, can I burn wood and coal, on the grate at the same time, my grate has cracked (11 years old), so binned it and just burning wood, apparently the grate cracking is because of the duel fuel burning…..

    I burn coal and wood and have no problem.

    I have a Charnwood backboiler stove where I can adjust the grate bars for open for smokeless coal or closed for wood.
    I leave it open for the coal and put the wood on the top, I can then adjust the air supply to control the burning.

    I have been using kosy glo smokeless coal from Kosyking for a good few years, we burn just coal in a boiler stove, this last pallet we burned has left a lot of slag on the grate, it is so bad, i need to use a hammer and chisel to knock it off, otherwise it would clog the vents in the grate. Has anyone else had this problem with the latest batch of this coal.

    Loads of ash. They do get the heat up quickly but don't last .
    There s a pallet of kiln dried softwood I can get for about €140 whereas a ton of these are 180 + delivery. -no comparison whatsoever.
    The timber is cleaner, a fraction of the ash and the heat is as good if not better

    They quoted me £265 or €300 this morning

    According to revolut £265 works out at €311.73

    yes in my opinion. Although I can only compare to ecobrites and other ovoids that are sold in the republic, the coalwarehouse ovoids are better and cheaper.

    I've been using them a few years now. I must be after buying about 10 tonnes from them at this stage, the quality doesn't seem to get worse.

    Bought a ton of ovoids from CW for my stove last August. Second time to buy from them. Satisfied with their performance when burning with timber. They burn down to a few cinders as I turn down the damper before going to bed and I use them as the base for the following days fire. Small amount of dust and small pieces left at end of bag which I use for slack to bank down the stove some nights. Hope this helps.

    I don't know if the quality has improved but I got the Polish Coal from CW a few years ago and it was terrible stuff. I had to clean the fire nearly every day as it was so dirty and left so much of an unburnt mess. I find their ovoids much better.

    What coal produces less ash? When I was burning kiln dried wood, I would only need to empty the ash tray every 2-3 days. With coal it is full every day.

    Nah, didn't buy yet. I was hoping someone here would give me a heads up on the quality.

    Got some of the bad quality stuff myself a couple of years ago but in fairness they were apologetic and easy to deal with when I complained. I seriously doubt they would stock/sell the same stuff again.

    I'm alright for the moment but will probably order half and half next week and will let ye know the craic.

    Said I would report back once I finished my last bag of CW smokeless ovoids and started the easyglow smokeless ovoids. No real difference in heat output and they burn really well. The only negative I can see is that there can be one or two nuggets left over the next day from a bucket of coal and never had that issue with the CW ovoids. I just leave them in the fire for burning the next day. overall happy enough with the Easyglow coal. Main pro's would be that the ordering process is easier than the CW process but otherwise there isn't much difference between the 2 coals.

    I ordered 2 ton of CW ovoids today. Price was €600. I asked if there was any reduction for repeat customers and they knocked 20 quid off. It's worth a mention if anyone is ordering again.

    You could just have googled it. Last time I bought coal from cw was 2 years ago...

    Ran out of ovoids and got some from 20kg bags of supertherm the local coop and they are total muck, nothing like the usual supertherm and I won’t be getting them again, the bags are 1/4 full of what can only be described and messy goo covered slack and the stove has cinders left the next day which never happens.

    Not a bargain but a heads up 2 bags of 20kg for €18 sounded good but it’s crap

    The internet isn’t for everyone

    Following thread a while, was just going to order from local co-op as couldnt be bothered with hassle of organising delivery from a supplier up north.

    Local co-op stocks the following:

    1. Bord na mona premium oviods
    2. Cosyglo (Arigna)
    3. Supertherm
    4. Eco-brite (Arigna)
    5. Black Diamond - Polish Doubles
    6. Black Diamond - Easiflame Smokeless.

    I got Cosyglo back in October and its muck, so wont be getting it again as it leaves a lot of unburned coal in fire.

    Wondering of the above which would be the best for an open fire?

    No idea about open fire but ecobrite arigna is my choice for Stoves. But I'd say it's very good in open fire as well.

    I'm very unhappy with my last delivery of ovoids from CW.

    I have been getting ovoids from them since this thread started, probably got about 12 tons in total now. I have always found they burn great, with very little ash left.

    However, the last delivery a few weeks back must be a different recipe. I used to have a few shovels of light (in weight) brownish grey ash in the morning but now I have about 20% of the original volume of ovoids in heavy black ash. Heat output seems down as well.

    Nothing to be done now but burn through the 2 tons and probably move onto another supplier for my delivery next winter.

    Did you contact them about it podge?

    I was going to order ovoids from them now that the price has dropped but I'm not sure after reading your post.

    I didn't contact them TBH as I don't really see any point. I can't send it back and it does burn, although not as good as previous batches.

    I have recommended these ovoids to lots of friends and family over the last few years but unfortunately can no longer do so based on what I now have.

    I’m fortunate enough to live in a border area for coal and oil. The best ovoids I have found are ‘Coalite’. Usually around €16 a bag, they produce far superior heat and a lot less ash than it’s competitors. It’s like they are harder or tighter compressed than the others. Coalite seems to have far less sulphur content too. Highly recommended as I find that quality of other ovoids seems to vary a lot.

    Recently i have had a good amount of slag sticking to the grate every morning when cleaning the ashes, we use Kosyking kosy glo ovoids, every couple of days i have to get a hammer and chisel and try to get it all off, we only use coal, nothing else, it got to the point where it was eating through the grate of our esse 350gs boiler stove, so we ordered a new grate and fitted it a couple of weeks ago, and within 3 days the same slag is sticking to the grate like concrete, i was talking to the guys at Kosyking, who are very helpful, and they told me that no one else has this problem to their knowledge, and there is no change in their supplier of this type of coal.

    We have been using this type of coal for years, must have ordered 20 tons by now, and it is only recently with the last few pallets that we have had this slag sticking to the grate, they advised trying another type of coal, we have tried different types in the past, but found kosy glo to be the best for our needs. it must be the coal that has changed, as the last grate had no problems at all with kosy glo for years.

    Have similar problem, actually change my grate at least once a year (grates now are crap,don't last- 16 " one in my local co op is cheap enough though around the e18 mark ( dairygold co op Carrigalin)

    The slag you mention is also known as ‘clinker’ and is usually a result of ash bonding at high temperatures. It can be like concrete alright, often it can only be removed when the range is not lit. Can’t say this is usually an issue with ovoids as the ash tends to be very fine and riddles well.

    .. I've had the exact same experience. I've sent on images and my findings, and had a conversation over Facebook messenger with the manager, but it came to nothing.

    I'm relecutant now to order anymore from them tbh, as the quality of the last tonne was inferior to other years, and I knew I couldn't be the only one.

    This also happened years ago when we had the open fireplace burning normal household coal, it would burn through the grate every year or so, although when we built the house in 1995 the grate lasted well over 10 years, we only changed it because we thought it could do with a new one, not because it was too damaged or anything, with the newer grates, we were lucky to get 2 years out of them, before they completely got burnt through, so the materials they were using were not as good as they were in 95.

    The boiler stove we got in 2012 had a grate that lasted for 6 years burning first CW ovoids then kosy glo ovoids, and not a problem until the last 2 pallets, they are doing something different with the way they make these ovoids that is for sure, although it burns really well, gives off good heat, very little ash, compared to some others, leaves a nice amount of cinders to start the fire again the next day, but something has changed. They do not make anything now like they use to, that is for sure.

    I got large ovoids from easyglow this winter and was very happy with them. My last lot from CW were pure wet . Easyglow arrange the delivery themselves.

    .. I've had the exact same experience. I've sent on images and my findings, and had a conversation over Facebook messenger with the manager, but it came to nothing.

    I'm relecutant now to order anymore from them tbh, as the quality of the last tonne was inferior to other years, and I knew I couldn't be the only one.

    Another Boardsie also contacted me about a poor experience they had with CW. I was going to contact the company but now I'm thinking there is no real point. Even if they give me a discount on the next order, I won't be buying from them again.

    The only solution that would be of interest to me is the complete replacement of the 2 tons I have with a batch of a different recipe but I can see that happening with CW.
