Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

I said this already on the E3 thread but I would much prefer if the game was 720p 60 fps than 30fps. I find resolution to be hard to notice at times but I can most certainly feel a game thats 30fps and 60fps

what fps was dark souls? was it 30 or 60? either way I loved it, and have no doubt I will love this game too with a nice graphic update and hopefully some darksoul/demonsoul gameplay style
fps at 30 won't really matter, only times most people would notice a 30fps would be in fps games like cod

This. I don't understand console devs obsession with making the game as beautiful as possible but sacrificing FPS. Dark Souls 2, Black Flag and Dragons Dogma are 3 console games that spring to mind. Both Black Flag and Dogma I stopped playing early into each game because the FPS was unbearable

Because it's a reaction to the obsession of the wider gaming audience to pretty things rather than things running at 60fps. :)

I can't wait for this, souls game or not, if its coming from fromsoft then its going to be crazy!

60fps does make most games feel more responsive and tighter compared to 30fps. I would say today 60fps is required by most games and resolution should be traded for it to a point. While resolution can certainly help immersion music and pacing also are factors, but with regards to responsive button pushing game optimization and frame rate does play more of a role.
Having it as a timed exclusive does seem to make the most sense, allowing them to make PS4 seem an even sweeter deal, and lure people to get a console who can't wait for it to release on other platforms. After 4-6 months they could release a PC version, hell they could even try and release a PS4 controller compatible with the game on PC. They have plenty of options to get money out of the game whist still making PS4 alluring to people.

Is it a Souls-esque game without the name does anyone know? I'll be buying it either way, and a PS4 to play it!

    Some more info.
Hidetaka Miyazaki, director of Demon's Souls, the original Dark Souls and the upcoming Bloodborne sat down with Japanese gaming mag Weekly Famitsu to talk about the new game.

Well, Sony's conference starts at 6pm I think, so if it's being shown, it'll likely be during it.

Reminds me of Nightmare Creatures on the PS1 a lot. The setting, creatures and weapons all look of similar style so I wonder is it an influence. I used to love it and the 2nd one but I haven't played them since they were released so I can't imagine they have aged well. Anyone else remember them?

To be honest this is....disappointing. I really like the setting/world the game takes place in but they seem to have pulled a "Dark Souls 2" on this one. I don't know what i expected from this game, but i didn't expect Dark Souls re-skinned and shinier. After the first release trailer i though this would be the game that would push me over the edge and pick up a PS4, but now im not so sure

Have you both played all 3 Souls games, as everything you have mentioned has been present in both of them since Demon Souls, you do not play a Souls game for its aesthetics, you play it for its punishing gameplay and it addictiveness, the graphics have never been the greatest and they reuse a lot of the animations, but at least it is not the same recycled garbage like Fifa and CoD.

  • Registered Users Posts: 7,160 ✭✭✭tok9

Calling it dark souls reskinned is doing it a big disservice at the moment.

It looks like a much quicker game than the Souls games, it doesn't look like we have a shield at all this time which will completely change up the combat and enemies aren't just there waiting for you at all times. A lot of them are looking for you.

It actually looks like it may have the feature Dark Souls 2 was marketing beforehand in the torch being important.

It definitely looks similar.. no doubt but so did Demon souls to Dark Souls and they are 2 of the best games of the last generation.

No it's not being marketed as a Souls game but it's from the same developer.

I don't really understand the issue?

It didn't look like a phantom either. Hopefully it's not fully co-op as that would take a lot away from the isolation aspect that Souls does so well.

Call me strange but I'd consider any game described with the phrase "Dark Souls reskinned" to be a massive compliment.

Never played a "Souls" game but this looks like the perfect way to get me into the series :)

    So back to my original point about the re-skinning of the game;
It plays & looks like Dark Souls 1 & 2 and yet it's not being marketed as a souls game however it's a completely new I.P.

For me that what's disappointing about it regardless, even if you do enjoy the gameplay formula. There's nothing original about this "New I.P."

I played and loved Demon Souls, Dark Souls and Dark Souls 2. I felt Dark Souls was a significant upgrade over Demon Souls which made it one of my favourite games of all time and Dark Souls 2 was just more of the same, which i was ok with at the time. But this just seems to be Dark Souls 3.

I was expecting something new in the gameplay mechanics since it was a new I.P but nothing seems to have really changed here at all which has left me disappointed. Looks like Souls games are becoming like the Call of Duty and Assassin Creed games, more of the same with very little ingenuity

I think the removal of shields should count as a huge change in gameplay mechanics, along with the addition of short range gun(s?) to stun enemies.
There's also the slightly changed health mechanics where successfully parrying an attack will get you a small health boost.
Plus the removal of magic so it's all hand to hand combat now.

Definitely think you should wait until more gameplay comes out before being so harsh on it. We still barely know anything about it other than the setting and some small game mechanics.

  • Administrators, Computer Games Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 32,395 Admin ✭✭✭✭✭Mickeroo

Combat in Dark Souls 2 was different enough to Dark Souls 1 to warrant it not being termed more of the same imo.

If that's from an aesthetic pov, fair enough. But on gameplay it's a bit harsh to say it's the same. As I said, it looks quicker, you can't block anymore. You have both a ranged and combat weapon at all times to the looks of it. They can be combined to create a heavy weapon, we don't know much on the online aspect yet etc..

..and that's from a 6 min clip of the only area we've seen so far.

I would just argue that this is the case for a lot of games developed by the same company.

Naughty dog with Uncharted and TLOU, Bungie with Halo and Destiny and so on.

I would just wait until we have a bit more info first.

It plays and looks like a Souls game by design though. Sony own the Demons Souls IP and, according to some interviews with current From President and Souls series Director/Supervisor Hidetaka Miyazaki, they approached the studio to do something new but with the same DNA as the Souls series for the PS4. From the footage of Bloodborne so far, that's what we're getting.

Seeing asset reuse at this stage isn't that surprising and could very well be placeholder in a few cases. In others, such as the UI design, why fix what's not broken? I'd imagine they're aiming for something that feels familiar to the Souls audience but given the drastic settings change and changes to combat, is different enough to differentiate itself from the Souls series.

That seems to be addressed here.
“We were already thinking of a shift to a combat system where you would enter battle more actively than the sword and shield-based combat of Demon’s. So we adopted the idea of guns, but there was a prerequisite that we didn’t want the game to turn into a shooting game, and the Victorian age fit perfectly. It’s an era where the imagery of old guns still remains.”

I imagine we'll see magic in some form or another. Maybe alchemy or something?

I agree, the souls games are brilliant and id welcome a souls game ever 2 years no problem unlike other games that have outstayed their welcome, if this game was not exclusive id say it would make a **** ton more money then been on the one console. Sony definity know how too make exclusives.

First off not aimed at you tok but DS hard-cores seem to be getting there panties in a twist. I played Dark Souls and enjoyed it.

But on your point, for me like Dark Souls reskinned from what is clearly evident in the video. But we can agree to disagree here. :)

Again if it's not being marketed as a souls game then it's not a souls game.

They could have easily called it Blood Souls tbh

Making a comparison to Uncharted and TLOU is unfair in my opinion. Such a vast difference between the two. And these clearly being different IP's from the same delevepor.

Well said and I understand your opinion here. But 'according to' his still hearsay. Also, asset re-usage to the extreme here though from what I'm witnessing.

Your post is irrelevant; This is not being marketed as souls game, so it's not a souls game. Ask the developers.
