Yeah we've been keeping an eye on Daft, only thing is we're in a townhouse and there's not too many of them around. They're finishing our estate atm and if the price is decent we would be tempted to sell.

Are you west or east of town? There's seems to be a crazy variation on the prices. Stalking Daft is a favourite pastime of mine and now with the property price register, i have my own little fantasy property portfolio on the go

A good place for it,plenty of space and car park, but just not the same since Music World closed.Had some good craic over the years queuing at both the old Shopping Centre and Golden Island. They always had lots of tickets printed off before they opened so they got people in and out quickly, and before the computerisation they had a big bundle of tickets ready to go when they opened.
Glad it's gone from the hole in the wall at Daybreak. They were so slow to get tickets out.

AFAIK the guy that was running that shop is now running the Ticketmaster counter in SuperValu ... any time I was in SuperValu around concert ticket selling time, there seemed to be a bit of a queue and kerfuffle around that counter

I didn't know that, haven't had to buy any tickets sinceTicketmaster moved there.

It is the old story in Athlone. Never buy a house on the far side.

    Hi,

I want to hire a Santa for kids party in Athlone on 1st December.
I would need Santa just for an hour or less.
Any suggestions on where to find someone who comes as Santa and how much will it cost me?
    Looking for a budget option.

    Lights are on this week.

Church St to be completed in December as per the plan.

Mixed views on both, but the car ain't king no more and we best get used to it.

    Anyone know the reason?

No there's an axa insurance office in our building. Above coffee haven. I met staff in the hallway at lunchtime yesterday.

They've closed a lot of their branches around the country - Tullamore, Loughrea, Carrick on Shannon, a few Dublin ones. They have downsized many of the others. Moving the work to call centres and online. Quite a few people have lost their jobs around the country and it never made the news.

AFAIK that's the Axa farm insurance. Not sure if it's just a call centre like the one out by Kilmartins or if it's open to the public.

It will have to be open. Farmers don't do call centres.

For those of you who remember Ryano's chipper back in the 80's & 90's down on Lloyds Lane... well it's reopening across the street from the Guards Barracks/Post Office. I'm sure it will be a popular spot over the Christmas.
It's being run by his son and will have all to old menu apparently.

Has anybody else noticed the lack of pedestrian crossings in the new works on Church st? Yes there are sets of lights at the shopping center and at Custume Place but nothing in between, there were Zebra crossings at the Prince and at Hynes Auctioneers which have not been replaced and with no visible signs motorists don't observe the ramps as pedestrian crossings. I've almost been flattened a few times trying to cross because the cars don't want to stop...

They likely don't want to stop because of the amount of lights and delays they've already had. Snails pace there.

There is like 50 metres between Shopping centre and Custume place (in addition to the fact that its one way on cobblestone/concrete). Anyone who mows you over does so at 10kph at best. You might do more damage to them if your a big fan of the takeaway mentioned above!

50 metres??? You'd better get your measuring tape out there... while it's not a mile or a kilometre even it's definitely a lot longer than 50 metres and would be a real pain to walk to either end to use the traffic lights.

My point is that this whole thing seems to be an attempt to make the centre of town more pedestrian friendly and not providing as many crossings as there were before the works (which I'll agree are progressing at a ridiculously slow pace) it kind of defeats the purpose.

While not an issue affecting only Athlone, I've noticed a lot more "Red Light Roulette" at traffic lights in the last few months around town. It's especially bad coming from the Railway Station to the Cresent junction (yellow box seems always to be congested) and at the traffic lights/ junction at St. Vincents hospital. I had a suicidal elderly gentleman break the lights there and cross in front of me whilst riding his electric bicycle the other evening.

That is a terrible junction, very badly designed and will always cause frustration for all road users.

I'm not from the town but visit once or twice a week. Only today I noticed the Goldsmith gone, when did this happen ?

Glad to see Ryano's opening up again....there is a God after all.
