I'd love to know myself. The infrastructure has been there quite a while now with no further development.

The court case was settled early last year (Objection to tender award was withdrawn) and they expected works to commence before the end of 2017 but as of now, there hasn’t been any works carried out.

I’d say the original developer must have lost whatever backing they had got and are trying to raise funds again. Planning must be nearly up now as well so expect that to be extended.

Also great to hear yesterday that Mullingar developers Bennett’s hope to have the old shopping centre up and running by early next year. Giving it a facelift as well.

Multi storey car park is reopening soon as well, but that’s under separate ownership as far as I know.

It's starting to look stupid now on the motorway. I drive past it a few times a week and there hasn't been a sign of movement there in yonks. The exit to nowhere.

They plan on opening it as a shopping centre?

Does Athlone need a 3rd centre

Probably not but the parking would be very welcome especially at busier times. At Christmas they park up on the grass at GI car parks

Nah, Athlone definitely doesn't need another shopping centre. If that place is going to be any sort of success, they need it to just be a few large anchor tenants. Polonez is already there, I heard mention of Harvey Norman as a possibility, although that could be rubbish. Has anyone ever been in the multi-storey?

Random thought..Why are there still no automatic checkouts in either Dunnes in town? Elsewhere in the country, most of them have taken on at least some of them.

Surely better to convert the old Texas site into apartments and multi story car park I would have thought

Hate them with a passion, the amount of times I've used electronic checkouts in other stores only for there to be a malfunction requiring assistance is unreal. B&Q checkouts havent been in operation in ages and were always finicky as an example. They are great when running well and you only have a handful of items but often i find a properly staffed checkout quicker and the more electric checkouts there are the less staff assigned to the proper checkout which can handle a weekly shop better on space alone.

An indoor market would be a nice thing to have in Athlone similar to the English market in cork but with more places to eat, probably not the demand though unfortunately.

Sounds like a good idea. The units could be designed to be multi-purpose, retail or office. Offices could be used for startups or as an Enterprise Hub if it doesn't get used as a Retail Centre.

I hope that polish shop stays though. I like their beer selection and they have some nice vodkas too.

Surprised they don't set up their own off-license.

I thought this was a licencing issue with some of the anchor stores.

Probably was. I heard there was some fighting over this and that.

    https://www.rte.ie/news/business/2018/0413/954206-circle-k-rebranding/

This article mentions the opening of a new Topaz (or Circle K as it will now be known) in Athlone. You'd imagine that'll be the motorway service station.

Maybe they're just pimping the one on Ballymahon Rd?

A further €35m is being invested into the development of four new sites - these include two new sites in Co Kildare as well as sites in Gorey in Co Wexford and Athlone in Co Westmeath.

    New site!

    New site!

Yeah I was thinking about the development potential next to it.

There's no empty space to develop next to that station.

That's now owned by Corrib Oil.

But is a Topaz franchise, which is being rebranded as Circle K.

Is there any place to bring extra household waste around Athlone? Our bin was not collected last week, and we are moving out next weekend so would ideally like to empty the bin, otherwise we will have to let the landlord take care of it after we leave (may be easier do this, or just leave him a bin tag or something).

Barna take rubbish at both of their places. €4 a bag at the recycling centre behind Golden Island SC, and I think a flat rate of €10 at their centre beside AIT. Try them on (090) 647 3500.

    Hardly take mattresses?

    Hardly take mattresses?

I was out at the place beside AIT last Saturday and it looked like someone had left in mattresses, there was a pile of them inside the main shed.

€10 for single, and €18 for double mattress at the Golden Island centre according to this.
