Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Probably mispronunciation of Karysn/Carsyn which, albeit being Americanny sounding(despite it and it's male version (Carson) originating in Scotland), is quiet a nice name I think.
bit like naming your child Ian Paisley

Other beauties include 'Cliodhna', 'Maighr' 'Ruaidhri' etc.
Some of these unfortunates must have hilarious fun at the passport check desk.
....and here comes Sadhbh Lasairfha Nhallchobhair followed by
    Blnaid Caoilfhionn Ni Raithbheartaigh ....:D

:) I have an Irish name but one with a modernised spelling. I still get a pain in my balls having to spell it out at all times (and that's within this country, ffs)

Get with the programme people. Orfhlaith et al are no longer officially cromulent Irish, they're purely an affectation for tossers.

    Scrap the cap!

Blaise is a French name, Blaise Pascal, Blaise Matuidi. It sounds good with a French name and in a French accent but Blaise O'Brien, doesn't quite work.
    Hudson is awful

I was in a stall in the bathrooms in Stansted yesterday, and I overheard someone calling their kid Artemis. Cool name really but not something I'd call a kid.

    Artemis Fowl fan, no doubt.
Was the unfortunate a boy or girl?

I know of a woman called Artemis who was born before the books, don’t know if it should be male or female normally though.

  • Moderators, Recreation & Hobbies Moderators Posts: 16,287 Mod ✭✭✭✭quickbeam

Female. The original from Greek mythology was female. Artemis Fowl was a guy so it's probably going that way now.

Another example: Paris, also from Greek mythology, was a guy, but is now used more for females thanks (probably) to Paris Hilton.

Child of actress Shannyn Sossamon so you have hundreds of real names
mike, thomas to choose from etc no not good enough .Lets take 2 random words from
    a science book.
or Blue Angel one of edge from u2 children.
In america it seems any word can be used as a childs name.
I think all famous people are all using drugs while thinking of a name
or else they have left the real world .
EG they live in celeb world , they only talk to other famous people ,
or nannys ,servants, personal assistants etc no one has the guts to say that name is weird or awful.
They no longer have to talk to real people .
They think i must pick a name that no one else could use.

A couple I know called their son jaxon, he's about 18 months old, only one I knew of. Their neighbours (semi detached house) had a boy last week and have called him jaxon also. Think the first couple are a bit peeved off.

Reminds me of a christening from a few years back.
Priest: Now would the parents of Jack please come to the altar?

4 sets of parents stand up and stare daggers at each other like they'd come up with this really original name all by themselves and the others copied them

So the question is - is it better you go with an "off the wall" name (like some of the ones mentioned here so far) or a "common as mud" name?

When we were naming (no way I'm putting her name in here), we took the top 100 names from the past year and excluded them all.
It's not an off the wall name, but she's one of only 3 we've ever met in the past 5 years

I think she used to be a DJ so the words afren't completly random. That's probably where the inspiration came from.

    It's still batsh1t crazy though.

People think they're being unique and different by using the new spelling Jaxon. Then they get p!ssed off when they realise everyone else is thinking the same lol. Jaxon seems to be in vogue at the moment but it will probably die down in the near future.

    Sorry to be so indulgent.

But when my mother was carted off to A+E in her last illness six weeks ago, we had to listen to the screaming of Rocky, Rocky are you OK. Get them doctors to sort you out. It was fkn mayhem. They all arrived one after the other.

Not a good experience for us with a very ill mother but the staff were brilliant, but they must just raise their eyes now and then.

Hat tip to the emergency services including A+E.

Travellers shout really loud. That is my experience over many years.

Kids in my sons class in England

Lucifer and Hellsley (boy) both evil ****s. 4 Masons all bully’s.

Gracie Mai and Harvey. Twins and nasty little kids.

Funnily enough only decent kids had normal names. With the exception of one beautiful kids teeny little girl called Helga

Wasn't until she went to her wedding her real name was announced as Gertrude! Some parents are cruel!!!

Rudy isn't too bad. Yeah, I guess Gertrude would be the origin of Girty. I just am dubiou as to the coincidence of Girty Scutter. Just sounds like a christmas cracker joke playing on Dirty Gutter.......
