Tried this on today. Bonus landed last week and I got a large pay rise too. Liked it but I think I'd rather wait a while and buy a speedie or go all out and get a day date. Worked out around €3250 on current exchange rates.

Going to say it, you dont want a non-chrono navitimer, you have to go with the classic on that watch. For me Speedie is a better move, the Navi is a very large watch. Day date...well yes but thats a totally different league, and if you are in that game dont mess with the lower end stuff at all and go straight there. Date day is pure class.

Yeah agree with fitz if you are getting a navi get the chrono .

What’s a day date retailing at now ? 30/35k? That’s a big jump from that !

Day date or datejust would be my end of contract bonus gift to myself. Need to get to the end of contract first though. Delayed gratification and all that!

If you can spend 30k after tax on a watch in the near future, dont mess around with lower end stuff. Buy a moonwatch if needs must those can be shifted on like lighteningn if you bore of it.

If I do buy one it won't be new. 30k wouldn't be on my radar.

I've been watching the Tour de France and I noticed last week that the French rider Julian Alaphilippe of the Deceuninck-Quick-Step team (Sam Bennett's team) was wearing a wristwatch while riding in the race which isn't something riders do. I Googled it and found it's a very expensive Richard Mille.
There must be some commercial promotion thing going on as I doubt any rider would be stupid enough to wear an expensive watch he paid for himself while training let alone in a professional road race.

Richard Mille must be the most Alaphilippe watch there is:-)

Smart bit of business by RM if it is because he probably gets more attention than any other French rider and has that F1 sort of personality they go for.

They sponsor three F1 teams as far as I know, more than any other brand. Watch companies love F1, I think Williams are the only brand without a sponsor.

The cost of RM is so crazy, they couldn't be worth the money, but what watch is? They're kind of a statement piece for lots of sports people or celebrities with new money. Kind of like Hublot for millennials. You see them on lots of footballers. I'd love to get a hold of one in my
hand. They almost look plasticy to me from seeing them on TV. They aren't really my cup of tea but some of them do look okay.

Funny that you ask, Sagans background is in mountain biking so I was thinking something more sports orientated and colourful (maybe like those new Breitling gshock type watches) and then I googled it out of curiosity and found this. I couldn't have been further off. He actually collects vintage Japanese watches! Mad the amount of people into watches that you wouldn't realise.

Agree with the above as roughly what I would define also but it also depends on the lug curve, domed crystal, bezel etc.

I doubt you can get a domed crystal in any "thin" watch - domes can add 1-2mm onto the height... I think the thinnest automatic with date is a Piaget at 6.3mm - without date it goes down to 5ish? and 4ish for a Bvglari (includes a tourbillon too afaik).

Maybe Wibbs will come along and say "back in vintage days - 9 was considered thick"

Not at all - for the aventurine we added over 1mm over alternative brass options for example so we probably would have been around 8.7mm or less using a "normal" dial. But just thinking out loud for future R&D - would love to get a 7mm automatic/date option out there (will probably be a hard sell again since thin isn't necessarily in or prized right now).

Might be something cool though.

Put it this way - even Sea-Gull offers a 9mm automatic watch for 350 euro ish (and 8mm handwinding movement too) - so 9mm would be the start of "thin" for me (unless there are special reasons for it to be thicker).

Wouldnt say that would be a USP that many would purchase for.

Something I would but that would be a minority view.

9-10mm is a reasonable place but it really depends on the watch. A square edge (like many Bauhaus style watches) can have can make them look a little thicker than they are vs a domed bezel into the crystal.

This guy put up a skx for 180 euro and had 5 asking price offers in 5 mintues, somebody point out they were worth more than that and he took the ad down. Now its back up at a grand....lol.

The fact that there are so many sellers and buyers of items with...

A- No idea what the items actual market value is
B- Cant accept the price as it stands without wanting another 10 cents off.

Means asking prices on adverts are worse gauge of value than watchfinder.

Watching the football at the moment and there is quite a lot of Hublot ads running on the pitch side video banners.

Turns out Hublot are now the PL's official timekeeping partner, replacing Tag Heuer.

Quite honestly 1st I'd heard of Tag being gone was when I started googling Hublot today after spotting the banner, and it then dawning on me that the Tag on screen logo on the clock was gone.

Bought one of them brand new last year from creationwatches I think for €128. Should have bought 1000 of them

Crazy that they are worth so much now. Great watch, but an entry level Seiko diver is just what it is.

I think the jdm versions are worth a bit. They have 23 jewel's on the dial. I've a stock non jdm one and a bunch of parts for a mod project. Strap code jubilee and hopefully soon crafter blue..

The interesting thing is you can source the jdm dial for about 65 euro..

As it's come up a bit recently about watches on tv etc..does anyone watch modern family? We started this summer as the kids are all at an age where we can all enjoy it together. Jay has a nice collection of watches...at least a rolex daytona in there, few bell and ross and he was talking about a Panerai in a recent episode we watched

J1 versions of SKX009 go for 280 on chrono so real value is around 235 euro on a private sale. I also have to question what difference it makes, J1 versions are neither rare nor different. I see our boards.ie friend had dropped the asking to 600 now, but the min offer is 280 so maybe he is not on magic mushrooms after all. I think when he got a sniff that he was selling too low he thought he was onto something, when in skx land have something different makes about 50 euro difference.

People need to stop buying them at that price but they won't. It's like €7 pints in temple bar. Why would they lower the price when people are packing the places out 7 nights a week at €7 a pint?

So you'll have the microbreweries and microbrands come out to provide "value" at prices that are still sustainable

- operation of the free market (unless you manage to trademark phrases like "navy" :P (marina militare) and stop the competition that way ha).

Though in your case it would need to be micro-pubs rather than microbreweries that are driving the demand/supply price intersection point being higher.

They look nice!

I am looking to dress down the ALS a tiny bit. The current leather is black and a wee bit shiny which is classic dress watch.

I am thinking a brown ish strap? Matt finish. Maybe calf skin as they are usually very supple?

(And no....the irony of buying a classic dress watch and then trying to dress it down is not lost on me.........

Would how it would look on Nato....)

+1 on these. One caveat, get something with calf lining. I had the Horween and the rough side took a good while to break in - chafed my wrist for a while. Most of there straps are straight cut (no taper). I feel your ALS needs a classic taper even on a casual strap.

I was in the same boat as you with the Stowa. After a week of research I finally got the velour-like Nomos calf strap and couldn't gel with it. Fipped it within a week. Something about the monochrome look makes me prefer a classic black of blue.

Edit: One takeaway I had from my research is non-padded quality leather straps are harder to find. The padding IMO adds to the formality. The Nomos Shell Cordovan is super value but maybe a bit too burgundyish if you're going that direction.
