Main event so to speak gathering in the southwest with showers dieing off ahead of it.

Will turn to sleet/snow as it moves north but still unclear as to where this will impact most.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,101 ✭✭✭squarecircles

met eireanns third update since 0600

    Seems a very fluid situation

    Today

Cold and blustery with sunny spells and scattered wintry showers. Cloudier conditions with some patchy rain and sleet soon into the Southwest and will move Northwards over the country this afternoon and evening turning to snow in parts, especially on high ground. Moderate to fresh and gusty southwest winds will be strong near coasts, with gales for a time near the North coast.
    Tonight

Cold tonight with further wintry showers of hail, sleet and snow an ongoing risk of thunder. Wintry showers gradually becoming confined to the Northwest as the night goes on with good clear spells developing. Minimum temperatures of -3 to +1 degrees with frost and icy patches forming and some freezing fog as winds ease overland.
    Tomorrow

Sunday will be cold with sunny spells. Wintry showers in the Northwest of Ulster will die out through the morning. Further wintry showers will develop in Munster, Connacht and South Leinster during the day becoming more widespread in the evening with some hail, sleet and snow especially for high ground, and the ongoing risk of thunder. Highest afternoon temperatures will range 2 to 4 degrees inland over the northern half of the country, but 5 to 8 degrees further south and near coasts. Light to moderate southerly winds will increase strong around Southern coasts.

That feature moving up from the southwest is likely to fizzle out as it reaches the Midlands thus precipitation will be light and patchy.

not really expecting anything from this in Meath. It probably won't even make it this far north. Tonight will probably be clear and frosty.

We had a slight dusting of snow here in south Laois this morning. Settled well on nearby hills above ~200m.

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,023 ✭✭✭Donegal Storm

Plenty of wintry showers in Letterkenny all day, I think 'wintry mix' best describes it as there's random intervals of rain, hail, sleet, graupel and snow

  • Banned (with Prison Access) Posts: 3,315 ✭✭✭nthclare

Cold in Ennistymon Co Clare, getting cloudy now.
6 Celsius but with cloud cover coming in that will probably cool things down.

All the paths are dry, drying for snow as they say.

But more than likely just hail rain and sleet here, too close to the ocean.

Well technically it's snowing here near Riverstick Co Cork since 1405h. It's not sticking but it's cold and wet..

    Rain in city centre :(

Does not like there is much if any meaningful precipitation on the way from this so even if conditions were favourable for snow it would not amount to much.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,180 ✭✭✭pauldry

Cold wind in Sligo but not cold temperature and 7c

Wind still far too strong for snow

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,322 ✭✭✭✭leahyl

Snowing on northside of cork city but not sticking obviously - still, so pretty :-)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 40,347 ✭✭✭✭Itssoeasy

Looks like it's been making a token gesture to snow on the northside of cork city.

Rain coming in off Atlantic now that will fall as rain in Western half of country but snow in midlands and East and North.

1°c and sleet in Cork Airport at 2:30.

Just checking how the observations are matching the GFS model soundings. For Knock at midday the 06Z forecast run sounding matched the observed surface temperature and dewpoint (3.6/-0.5 C) very well. For Casement, the forecast temperature (3.9 C) was correct but the dewpoint (-1.6 C) was about 2-3 degrees too low compared to observed (0.9 C).

    gfs_2019121406_fh6_sounding_EIME.png

The forecast for 18Z is better, showing light-moderate precipiation in the form of snow, but it edges back out to marginal in the 00Z forecast. Again, this is the GFS, so a lamppost watch may prove to be more useful later on.

Wet sleety rain in carrigaline for about 15 mins around 2.20pm.

Blue skys now though and dry

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,981 ✭✭✭JanuarySnowstor

Very cold today in Cork only between 1 and 3C now.
Was hill snow around early though just sleet on lower ground. Strange day who would have thought we would max out at 3C under a southwesterly wind!!

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,981 ✭✭✭JanuarySnowstor

Looking at the 12z run what really stands out to me is a serious ice risk on Sunday night!! Everything comes together....saturated ground, winds easing and upper temperatures very low!! The gritters will have their work cut out I would think.

In the meantime further hill snow tonight for some areas with plenty reports of snow I would have thought. A line East of Galway through the Midlands after 10pm looks a good fit!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,101 ✭✭✭squarecircles

Falling as sleet now readily over the ocean, snow showers tonight in the west/northwest, fizzling out as it reach the Midlands and the east later tonight.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 248 ✭✭kod87

Not much precipitation forecast for tonight, just light showers that will fizzle out quickly, might be a dusting for a few areas though.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,666 ✭✭✭✭sryanbruen

Slight dusting at Wicklow Mountain peaks but a little red sky to go along with it.

3.8C here in Tralee, Dp 0.6C. No recorded precipitation during daylight hours. Good coating on the mountains.

As squarecircles said above looks like the W, NW. N Midlands this evening, cloud bank showing up on the radar making it's way to the coast. Don't know if it will make it's way towards the E .Might even get a shower here in Kerry, I'll let ye know if we do :)
