Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

I'm thinking of applying when the next recruitment thing opens.
I've already completed a degree in Sport tho and I'm wondering if there's any way I can use this if I became a member, not just the degree to get a higher pay but the actual sport side of things.
    Thanks!

Become a trainer up in Templemore, besides that, don't think they'll be much use for it.

For some reason doing a course in sport related stuff is very popular for some people before joining the guards. So it is hard to tell would you get to use it.

    Hey all,

Im working in a job now which I dont really like, the only reason im staying is because they will pay for me to do my professional accounting exams.

I want to join the guards and the only reason I would do the ACCAs is because im told I would get promoted quicker in the guards to CAB, etc.

Is this true? I already have a BA honours degree.

Also how long would it take between applying and being accepted?

When do the guards next recruit?

    Thanks folks!

does anyone know exactly when for sure, they are recruiting again?? i am told it is towards the end of this year (08), and that they're only taking in 100.
i wonder will reserves get any sort of preference

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 9 razor89

nobody knows at the moment wen the next recruitment cycle will begin sadly, so at the moment all you can do is wait and prepare, also, theres so much speculation going around at the moment in reguards to recruitment numbers etc and i would urge you not to believe one single word of it from this site or anywere else simply because nobody knows! personally all the gossip and speculation has me at my wits end.

reserves do not get preference as such. ik will just make the interview stage easier, ie. very relevant compentinces, being a reserve will remove any doubt about your commitment. there is a section in the PAS Material witch refers to this.:)

Once you've done your 3 years and you're eligible to apply for the specialist areas, can you apply to any area? For example, flying has always been a passion for me. Would you need a helicopter license to go for the Air Support Unit?

no your right. my uncle is a sergeant with in met. he said in ireland, applying was much more detailed, and you are a student/ trainee/probationer for much longer as well. he reckoned you are better trained in ways. gardi who go to the met on exchange he said were well respected and the gs is seen as a well disciplined, hard working productive force. they also see the lack of ppe amazing. :D

The Garda helicopters are flown by Air Corps pilots so you would have to apply for a cadetship in the Air Corps (extremely competitive but worth a shot).

You can however, apply to become a helicopter observer after a certain number of years in an GS.

I was told by a Garda that they are only taking in 90 in the next cycle!

I would say (and hope) that they will recruit early next year. The last 2 campaigns were January and May 08. Seeing as the College Open Day is on on the 8th October, I couldn't see them recruiting in November, coming so close to Christmas and all.

we have heard a speculative number 11 times now, yes iam counting. i asked the local sergeant about this, he said, and i quote, all matters regarding recruitment is decided at HQ level and gardi on the street have no way of knowing recruitment numbers. he also said from his time teaching in templemore, there is never a definite number to be taken in. he said no one in the gs will make "cutbacks' on recruitment because they are always fighting for more numbers. all decisions are made at government level and a statement would be released if a decision is made. there will always be recruitment, smaller numbers just like before!

Hi guys, lady from HR told me last week that the intake for November is still 270 that all the rumours are lies. She also said that no job offers will be sent out until the first week of October that anyone saying they have a job offer before then are lying. She said that no changes will be made to the recruitment not until after the budget atleast and that any changes made will be for the better....So stop panicking you guys, I know its horrible waiting because I'm also in the same boat but if you think about the amount of people who apply etc there's alot of work involved! I know I get annoyed sometimes wondering why it can't be quicker but atleast we are making progress it's just hard because it's something we all want soooo bad!!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 136 ✭✭jt123456

Ahhhhhhhh....... Lies makes Baby jesus cry... Im really really getting frustrated with all these rumours and random people coming out with random stories. I would rather know nothing until i get the letter in my hand. There's obviously gonna be a lot of speculation coming up to budget time and recession but i bet the peeps in civil service are more worried about their jobs than us. Roll on first week in october.

So let me just get a definative answer on this. When Is the estimated time for the new application process? Is it november?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 131 ✭✭Alias B

Just registerd to boards yesterday and have already found this site very helpful! Thank you to all for responding! :)

I know its difficult to measure how you're application is going but does anyone have a rough estimate of how many people were in each batch of the May competition. I know not all of those people would have gotten through Stage 2 but just to put a rough figure on it, to put things into context.

Also, once the backround checks, the PCT and the medical are done and passed is your application accepted on a 'first come, first serve' basis or is it that the more successful applicant takes priority! Sorry if thats a silly Q, answer appreciated!:rolleyes::rolleyes:

Hi there everyone Im brand new to this and so far i have learnt more browsing this site in the last 30 mins then i have enquiring from sources as to when the next recruitment cycle will be? Im a serving member of the Garda Reserve for the last two years and have had two unsuccessful attempts at getting in as a full timer. Has anybody got a reasonable idea as to when the next competition will be out as it seems everything is up in the air with the upcoming Budget on the way? I have gone down twice in the past on the Verbal Evaluation end of things at the interview stage just wondering if anybody has any recommendations as to how to correct this? I have done a course and I really dont rate the Kilroys College course Ive seen it and its patchy at best regarding Verbal Evaluation.
I have done really well regarding the verbal interview and the Job writing exercise its just the VE part im falling down on. I misssed the May competition but I have been told that the Aptitude Tests have become a little tougher than previously is there any truth in this? Would be great if someone can reply to this cheers

    hey sparky1977,

i dont think that Tests have become a little tougher than previously, but i could be wrong. the questions in the VA are very similar to one the home study courses. Pm me and ill tell you witch one. all you can do is practice, practice, practice, that home study corse that has alot of examples some harder then the actual exam.

Hey everyone - new member here, so first of all, hello!

Now, is anyone else attending the open day at the training college in October? I emailed the college regarding the open day but haven't heard anything back yet. I'm thinking of calling them tomorrow from work and getting the details.

The boards are very useful and have given me a lot of pointers!

Look forward to getting to know you all in the future!

No way are you too old. You can join up to age 35 and many people do. If you look back at previous posts you'll see many from people your age or older. If its what you want go for it. Good luck :D

Best of luck with your studies. I'm in a similar position, but I was educated in Britain and am (was) missing some of the required subject. I sat my Maths LC (and passed!) this year, and I'm studying Spanish which I will sit next year. Once I have those two subjects under my belt, I will have the required educational standard.

Just remember - you have to have Maths and at least TWO languages (one of which must be English or Irish).

Let me know how you get on - are you doing your entire LC?

So anything of note from the open day in Templemore?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 9 razor89

hey, i just heard from a mate of mine down in templemore that the intake has been regulated to 100 per quarter!! which isnt actualy that bad considering the speculation about a complete hault on intake 4 2 years. the lad who told me heard the news from a super during his placement so to be honest id be fairly inclined to believe him but take it as you will.:)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,206 ✭✭✭jos28

I just got the same information from a senior Garda. 100 per intake, he also mentioned that the November intake batch has not yet been filled.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 19 redlane

This probably makes sense - 400 per year would more or less make up for resignations and natural wastage through retirement (very simplistically - at 15,000 Gardai, spread evenly over all ages, 367 recruits would be needed to cover natural wastage). That probably means chances of getting in go from about 1,000 in 10,000 to something more like 400 in 15,000 (considering the attractiveness of a secure drop and increased unemployment).

there will always be some lucky enough people to get the call a week or so before each intake, lets hope i am one of them this time.....

the open day was a great eye opener, just to see the college and speak to people that have been thru the process. the ficalaties are top class it seems if you get thru the recruitment process you are on the pigs back... it costs aprox € 50 k to train a recruit so basicly they dont let u fail unless you act the sack ofcourse u should try get up there for the next open day......

Fingers crossed for you. My source was in Templemore last Sunday when he was told. Here's hoping.

Yeh im hearing that it is a 100 per quarter but how many ppl are waiting to see if there in that 100 ? They filter ppl out through app test and interview and then it be interesting to see the figure they have left over after that and how they decide out of that number who goes in first.
