Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

It's ok I've worked it out. it's your position in each of the three disciplines added together. So a perfect score would be 3 and the worse score (based on 26 people) would be 78.

Thats exactly it couerdelion. However, as RC pointed out the primary focus is on the Green and Gold targets so they weigh more than the points.

Basically the challenge is ranked in order of the following

    1. How many targets you have achieved
    2. What colour the targets are
    3. How few points you have

So, the first person to hit a green target will jump to the top of the ranking regardless of what points they have. If 2 people have 1 green each the person with fewest points is ahead.

I've attached the final table for 2011 below to illustrate how it panned out.

Both cunavalos and interested were the early leaders in the year being the first (as usual) to hit the green mark in the bike and swm respectively. It generally works out in favour of who scores best across the 3 disciplines. So having a runaway lead in one section will most definitely not win the challenge unless you have a good position in the other 2.

Gold trumps Green obviously. As you can see below however Macrani, Oryx, RedB and NT all finished ahead of interested who had 2 Golds? The reason is because they all had 3 greens and thus had more targets than interested. If interested had hit the run green it would have jumped him a whopping 9 places!

So best way to approach it is aim for 3 greens to begin with :)

    Hope this helps

Hey amphkingwest, not sure with google docs. O the challenge the row with your own name would essentially be 'your' as no one else is going to update your data for you (usually). So I think you could link the idividual cells to your season spreadsheet as applicable. Or have a summary row in your season spreadsheet that populates the data that the SBR needs. Then link the 2. This all makes sense in my head if I was working with excel but I'm span new to google docs and the SBR is as far as I've gone with it so far. Maybe rom can offer a solution?

I can see it working in Excel but the Google docs will take a bit of getting to grips with. Thanks!

Damn you MCOS and BTH. Damn you both.

5 hour turbo session tonight now. I'll show yee. :(

I'm not going to be sitting on my hands tonight either....

If you want a lesson in the SBR challenge, I think you only have to look at Catweazle's masterclass in managing his SBR metrics over the year - 3 golds in the nick of time!

Lol and not one red cent more :D

I found the swimming and cycling manageable enough and had enough done up to Swinford to hobble over the line - but the run gold is very difficult, without the commitment to DCM I wouldn't have got near it!

I will admit I am a bit sheepish looking at Gibbos and Bambattas overall totals under me ;)

I can sense there is plenty more competitiveness in this years SBR already:)

Wait wait... does commuting count for the bike? Because if so... oh man I've got that locked up. 17k each way every day adds up! Feels like it'd be cheating though.

Depends how you treat said commute. I'd log a certain amount of commuting kms. Lots of people would treat their commute as a training session. I used to throw an extra 15 - 20k onto my cycle home from work so I could log it. :pac:

If I was running to and from work I'd be commuting and I'd log them as training miles.

I'll join the challenge this year.
I'm training for a marathon at the moment, so it'll probably be only running miles I log for then next month or so. Not sure when or where my first tri of the year will be, but it'll happen at some stage, and I'll fill in the distance column when it does.

Kudos to MCOS for organising this again.

Jeez, if it wasn't for commuting miles, I'd have nothing to log...!

    Happy New Year folks

As per the evolution of the 1000mile challenge, the SBR is moving to googledocs this year. It basically tidies it all up and makes life easier for everyone. Just click the link below and away you go! Just enter your boardsie name, distance you plan to aim for and then from there each time you visit, just update your numbers. You don't have to edit rank, colours, totals etc as the table will do most of that automatically (I hope!). We can then use this thread for anything else related to the challenge. Like the Oryx vs RC battle, JB type graphs, BTH's celebrations and updates when I get a spare time :)

Only noticing this bit now! Only gloating as I know it won't last. Just seems I got a bit of a jump on you all at the start of the year, but once you IM'ers get rolling I'll start sliding very quickly.

Also like the nice pink touch for the ladies!;)

:D hey the celebrations were good. It was just a shame they got buried under the masses of tables in the old version.

Hey mfdc sorry lad' but I had to take out your link to another sheet as it messed with the table. PM me if there is something you want to edit or link to. Maybe test it on another sheet to ensure it works before hyperlinking to the SBR sheet? Could you enter your numbers manually until that works?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 304 ✭✭mfdc

Whoops sorry about that, thought I could be fancy and link from another spreadsheet. I opened it up in another browser when logged out to check if it would work and it seemed to... hmm. Oh well, keep it simple I guess :)

Oh, dont worry, it will all begin to level out, I think everyones just giving it a mad burst to look good. Its a January thing.

I just pinkified the girls on the challenge page too. *wonders how to colour code the boys, by ability or eh, vital statistics.*

BTH was pink earlier as well, I think the colour sticks to the cell rather than the name? Someone has fixed me and BTH now though!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,208 ✭✭✭shotgunmcos

CW I think that was just Oryx having a laugh, girlies fixed on both sheets now.

All, yes the 2nd sheet shows positions based on points, it just formats automatically the SBR points column in sheet 1 overall. However sheet 2 will just become a reference point when targets start being hit and I have another column hidden that I am planning how to update the real ranking when the time comes. For now just enjoy logging your stats, having a laugh and a poke at people (who will enter the alternate cardio first, and with what?!). You will be called out for explanation of your extra cardio too :D

JB you are right, the challenge is shaping up to be much more competitive affair this year and with 3 of the ladies in the top 11 so far too

    I'm blooming pink as well..
Does that mean it doesn't count that I'm getting chicked by RQ and her mad running miles??? :)

RQ - is Galway your HIM race ?

Just changed sheet 2 to all black font as the auto fomat is formating source sheet at format level not sex of boardsie level :pac:

Sheet 1 is all that will matter in a few months anyway. Sheet 2 is just for those who want to know what position they are in overall. People could just as easily sort the main table with 4 quick clicks after they post too to organise

Nope, Galway is the same weekend of the National half marathon, can't be having that. Heading to the UK the following weekend.

So what green mark is going to fall first?
And who is favourite to take the ladies spot?

First green I think will be the swim with interested's welcome back to he challenge...

Asfor the ladies, Oryx for top spot again or have RC and DD got something to say about that?!

    :)

  • Subscribers Posts: 19,425 ✭✭✭✭Oryx

I reckon the swim will go green first too. (btw, where is Interested?) Then bike. The run seemed to be the hard target last year, more people hit the other two. (I think)

You tip me? Did you notice how I'm doing so far??? That bloody racoon is far too determined this year..... :)

It's disheartening to be behind, or just barely ahead of people who have only logged one category thus far... cheaters:pac:

8th on the bike!! Anybody that has mentioned the competitve side of this table has hit the nail on the head. Can we log hours spent obsessing over it, as "other cardio" :p

Anybody that has mentioned the competitve side of this table has hit the nail on the head.

It's definitely an incentive not to miss training. I'm way behind on the bike because most of my milage (kilometerage?) is done on a weekend, but I'm now thinking "What if everyone else does there's on a weekend as well as during the week!". Hmmmm.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 304 ✭✭mfdc

Does anyone here use Strava? I know it's popular for cyclists but the running side is relatively new, dunno if it's made any kind of impact here. Well, they've got a similar challenge going for January, running and cycling. Thought I might aswell mention it in case any of ye fancy competing against the rest of the world aswell as the SBR challenge :)

(thanks to the boards strava club for pointing this out!)

  • Registered Users Posts: 302 ✭✭actwithoutwords

Right, may as well give this a go. Knees-willing I will hopefully be doing the swimming and cycling legs of sprint and olympic triathlons. My running miles remaining on 0 will be a bit of a handicap, but still. I've been mostly swimming over the last few months, but did some cycling over christmas. Will take a while to get the hang of proper cycle training I think. This should help with motivation anyway.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,793 ✭✭✭Macanri

    Hey folks! BUMP.

Thanks for all the hard work last year on this MCOS. I like the new layout. I was thinking during the cycle today we could add in the RHS table the no of swims, cycles, runs completed to date. It would be interesting to see the variance.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,144 ✭✭✭Bally8

I'll added in my hill/forest trail walking/running and my strength training in the total training hours column. Not sure if this is ok or do I just total the time spent swimming, running and cycling? The other training is part of my overall training plan as I have my first adventure race this year too.

I did my first 3 mountain trail runs this week but after about 3 mins I realised I needed to get used to mountain walking before I can run:D so now I'm doing a run/walk strategy of about 90% wallking:D. Obviously not logging this as running but is it ok to put in overall hours training column? Can take it away no problem though

Hey Macrani, good idea. I've added 2 extra columns to put this optional data in if you like. Rather than have multiple columns I've just incorported those stats into one. So if you do 2 swims, 2 bikes, 2 runs and 1 other core, tennis, soccer etc... in the week just enter 2/2/2/1. I added my sessions so far in as an example

If anyone has any questions or anything about these let me know

+1 @ Bally 8 The optional data columns are open to whatever you wish to record. I'd include the hill running/walking distance and hours as it is all time off your weekly schedule dedicated to exercise.

Auto rank only ran down to row 43 so sorted that nom in case anyone's stats were not yielding a rank.

35 on the challenge so far, over last year's mark :)
