Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Have only finished Persona 3 and Fire Emblem: Awakening bust it's way to the top of the queue.

I'm about the same as that, stack of handheld rpgs to cut through. They seem to stack up real quickly. :D

Couple of console ones too, tbh..... One downside of favouring games that are generally lengthy.

So I beat Dragon Quest Monsters: Joker 2 at just over 49 hours. Party was abyss diver, grim rider, and a dark slime as my healer. Grim rider and dark slime both died, next turn abyss diver killed the boss.

I own all the DQ monsters titles that got western releases and can't wait to dig into them. DQ mixed with pokemon, it has to be all good.

Heard there's a substantial amount of post game content as well.

  • Registered Users Posts: 476 ✭✭Darkstrike

DQMJ2 is fantastic, proper quality game.

Surprised there isn't a great more hopping on the Pokemon style bandwagon really(actually, was Dragon Quest V before Pokemon?) I know there's a few(nothing in Pokemon/DQM's class though), but with the immense popularity of Pokemon, I'd have thought it would have become a much more common game style.

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 51,870 CMod ✭✭✭✭Retr0gamer

Yep DQV was before Pokemon and before that you had Megami Tensei.

Potentially bad news for us. Atlus's parent company filed for bankruptcy. Hopefully Atlus come out of it ok, I'm sure they will considering they were the only profitable entity of Index.

On the Atlus topic, while playing through P3P for the first time, I was pleasantly surprised to find one Vincent Brooks drinking away in the club, talking about is women and nightmare problems!

thought i'd mention that steam has Final Fantasy VII available now for €13
    http://store.steampowered.com/news/11030/

i know it's been around for a while on the square site, but it's far handier to have it on steam.

I'd still go for the PS1 version. It's a pretty crappy port with horrible midi music.

Had a bit of a heartattack yesterday due to SMT Strange Journey. Been stuck on a boss for the last few days. So I spent it formulating a plan of attack and final beat him on the train home yesterday. My battery then decides t would be a good time to start dying during the cutscenes afterwards before I could save. Thankfully the battery lasted in sleep mode while I ran home :)

Did you get to see all of your hard earned cut scene?

Also yes the PC port of FFVII is awful...this game was known for its epic CG cut scenes back in the day and they butcher it up on the PC port. Square deserve no money for this weird PC download of an old game.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 378 ✭✭ConFurioso

Especially since it's cheaper on the PSN. they also do regular enough sales. I got all the PSN FF games for a fiver each a while back.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,225 ✭✭✭snausages

The music is extremely easy to fix. There are different versions of the PC soundtrack, the steam/Square store version just happens to have the worst version. The MT-32 soundtrack is pretty special imo, better even than the PS1 original. I suspect though most people will prefer the PS version for nostalgia reasons.

The cloud saving is an absolute mess but that's the only major problem. The CG cutscenes are fine, they're not butchered at all. They just don't look good on a HD screen because their original resolution is 320x240, which is about equal to the res you'd get on a mobile phone these days.

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 51,870 CMod ✭✭✭✭Retr0gamer

I'd rather play the PC version over the European PSN version, at least it runs at the proper speed.

I did see my hard earned cutscenes, it was worth it :) The story is just getting better and better.

What part are you at retr0? I hit a wall near enough to the end, 2nd last world I think. Definitely do-able but ended up switching to P4 Golden. Soul Hackers is next but might get a chance to go back to Strange Journey before that. I'll inevitably drop everything later this month when SMT4 arrives.

I'm on the sixth area, think there are 7 and a 8th optional one.

The fifth area boss was where I was stuff. His first form was difficult enough. One of those asshole bosses that kept healing every round so you had to keep your damage output up. You have to fight him again a bit later and despite not healing every round he was even worse. He had a physical attack that could near wipe out my party in one and even worse an attack that did a random status to all party members. He came down to a bit of luck since he can sometimes do those attacks 3-4 times in a row and if you get hit with stone as the random status effect it's instant game over. He probably wouldn't have been so hard if I hadn't used all by bead chains on the previous encounter.

A bit of luck and the right demon combination and I got through him. Stat buffs/debuffs really are incredibly important in this game for bosses. This prick had a move that nullified them though so it was important to get them back up quick.

Apparently he's the big stumbling block for most people.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,750 ✭✭✭ghostchant

You're in the same sector as me so. Yeah that boss was a pain, the kind of boss if I didn't get past it in a week or so I might have never gone back to the game.

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 51,870 CMod ✭✭✭✭Retr0gamer

Hope there's nothing quite as tough later on. I'm used to SMT so I knew it was possible I just needed a far more specialised team. Once I got a good demon with a defense buff I knew I could beat him.

Replaying Star Ocean First Departure for the third time. It's one of my most favourite games.

Hopefully for PS3 or Wii-U, any console really. Don't like handhelds because of postural issues and screen damage.

I'd put money on it being a 3DS game. PS3 just isn't popular enough in Japan. I'd be happy with that, much prefer my RPGs portable.

It'll be ps3. Persona's popular but so popular that the ps3 install base would damage potential sales.

  • Moderators, Technology & Internet Moderators Posts: 17,135 Mod ✭✭✭✭cherryghost

3DS would be cheaper for a parent company that's been in trouble recently. Plus console sales haven't been THAT spectacular. I wouldn't be surprised if we seen a PSVita version too. P4: The Golden has sold more copies than P3 on the PS2.

EDIT: I lied, P3 in Japan was sold under a different name. Still, looks like the PS2 P3 only sold about 100,000 copies more.

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 51,870 CMod ✭✭✭✭Retr0gamer

It will make the most of it's sales in Japan and currently the console with the biggest install base is the 3DS which is also doing remarkably well in the West. It just makes sense to be on 3DS

I think the recent persona's have done about 300k each.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,225 ✭✭✭snausages

I hope they do something interesting with this one and not just the P3/P4 template. It's a new generation of Persona, maybe focus on early-mid twenty types.

Persona is about teenagers, that's what the series stands for, shin megami tensei but with teens. If you want older protagonists then the Devil Summoner, Digital Devil Story or the main series will have you covered. With SMT IV out in a week you should have that area covered.

I hope they do something new with the battle system. I love the P3 and P4 system but I wouldn't want it to go stale either.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,225 ✭✭✭snausages

Why does the series 'stand' for teenagers? That's not what Persona means to me. What I like about SMT is how it doesn't adhere to any set convention. Anyway mainline SMT has had teenagers, like SMTIII. Yet IV does not.

P4: The Golden has sold just over half a million copies, which is the 4th biggest selling game on the PSVita so far. .5m doesn't sound like much but putting it into perspective of PSVita hardware sales, 1 in 10 owners bought The Golden. That's the highest console to game ratio of any Persona game on any platform.

Now imagine the 3DS. 30 million? It really does make a lot of sense to go handheld.

It's a spin off of SMT... if? set in a school with teenagers. It what defines the series in the same way Maijin Tensei is defined by being a SRPG. It isn't really Persona if it's about a bunch of 20-30 year olds in school, that would be Saved by the Bell :P That's just what the series is about.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,225 ✭✭✭snausages

Didn't know that about ....if, but I think a mix of teens with adults should work just fine. There's no set age you can become a persona user and P2 already did it anyway. I think Catherine shows that Atlus are perfectly capable of writing for adults as well as teens.

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 51,870 CMod ✭✭✭✭Retr0gamer

Well as I said you've got Soul Hackers and SMTIV for that. If you want something like Persona 3 and 4 then there's Nocturne which has the same press turn system.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 884 ✭✭✭_Godot_

I am still replaying Star Ocean: First Departure. It's my third playthrough. Just finished doing private actions and about to go to the demon world.

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 51,870 CMod ✭✭✭✭Retr0gamer

I trying to get through Strange Journey before SMT IV is out but I don't think that will happen. At least SMTIV is a blast.

SMT IV getting some stellar reviews:

    http://www.metacritic.com/game/3ds/shin-megami-tensei-iv

Kat Bailey gave it 8.5, said the story is a bit staid. Sounds kind of like Nocturne to me which is all good in my books.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,225 ✭✭✭snausages

One thing I hope if I ever get a 3DS is that they make all paths equally interesting as far as content is concerned. I felt like with SMTIII you're really missing out not going down the 'True Demon' route (which may or may not constitute the 'canon' route for the backstory of this new game, I'm not sure). But going down that route pretty much trivalises any major decisions you were asked to make later on.

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 51,870 CMod ✭✭✭✭Retr0gamer

It was the same with SMT1. If you picked law you could only take on the demons in the basement of the tower. If picked Chaos you had to kill the angels by going up the tower. If you picked Neutral it was the canon ending leading into SMT2 and you got to tear ass around the Tower taking everything out!

I've heard that strange journey had much better content for all alignment paths so hopefully they follow that games example.

Some thing a bunch of Suikoden fans drummed up, all to do with getting a new Suikoden, or old ones ported.

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 51,870 CMod ✭✭✭✭Retr0gamer

Doubt we'll see anything like that happening. Would be nice to have Suikoden 1 and 2 on PSP or PSN but Konami have gone to **** lately. The Suikoden team long disbanded and the series isn't really Suikoden anymore.

  • Registered Users Posts: 476 ✭✭Darkstrike

Yeah, it'll never happen, which is a shame. I'd honestly play every one they made available, even Tierkreis and the PSP Japan only one.

I still haven't beaten vesperia yet. I think I'm on the second to last dungeon. I think I'll wait for reviews on Xillia since initial reports suggested it felt unfinished and that you need to play as the male character first to understand what's happening completely.
