Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

The new course in maynooth, business and law (MH406), does anybody know what the points for gaining entry are gonna be like? Also i wonder if this couse is of quality in comparison to others namely DN021 which is interestingly 4yrs were maynooth is a 3yr course!

anybody got any positive contribution or are doing DN021,replies appreciated!;)

    DN021 and MH406 are my no.1 and no.2

Haven't heard any feedback on either but I really like the idea of DN021 and they sold it very well at the open day... No idea on points for Maynooth but I'd imagine a good bit lower than UCD.. Anyone think UCD points might go up this year for that course, as they announced an increase in first pref's for it..

    English in UCD anyone????

    OR.. Journalism in DCU???
I have Journalism in DCU down too, and a friend of mine is doing it at the moment. Supposed to be the best Journalism course in Dublin

Can anyone tell me about Commerce (Business With Chinese Studies) in UCD? It was 455 last year but I suppose thatll drop. What are the hours like though? What college/part of China do you spend the erasmus year in? Is there a lot of maths in the first two years? And then what are the majors like? Is Marketing a good major? I wouldn't really like to have a major which was really mathematically demanding. I'm good at Maths just I wouldnt like doing it all the time

Yeah i hope i get in now.. i have english in UCD down first but i think i'd rather DCU. I know i'll love journalism in DCU but dunno about English..

Do you not think the journalism seems pretty limited in career choices??? Its a pretty narrow course like?? Thats why i was thinking english because i'll have a pretty useful degree behind me and then go on to do journalism after or something??

    HELP!!??:confused::confused:

Can anyone tell me what European Business (International Business with Transatlantic Studies) at DCU is like? It seems like a good course, the thought of two bachelors degrees appeals to me

I hoped to study law, but as I wont get the points in Dublin I have BESS as second choice and hope to do law afterwards..the downside is, I know maths is a module and I was wondering if anyone could tell me if the level of maths is very high? I did ordinary level maths, which i can't stand, and think I will get a low B. And could anyone tell me is BESS a suitable course to study law after or is there anything else that would be a better preparation??I'm kind of panicing now only a few more days to choose! Thanks so much!

  • Registered Users Posts: 29 jenfiction

    Hey leavo08,
There is a good bit of maths in BESS. I did ordinary level for the leaving and I though the maths was pretty tough but not impossible. If you work hard at it, you'll do ok because it's manageable. Everyone who did higher level maths for their leaving cert thought it was absolutley fine but there's no avoiding it. You're marked on maths attendance too so you can look at that as good or bad...
There's loads of maths in economics too. I don't know if you did economics before- I hadn't and I found it really, really boring.

On the upside if you're looking to do law, you can start a law module straight away in first year. I have to say, it's a really excellent class with a really entertaining lecturer. I personally thought it was the best part of BESS. The class is desgined specifically for people NOT studying law though but it'd give you the general jist of law and the workload is pretty light. There's only two lectures a week in first year though so if I was you, i'd look for something else more directed at law. Four years is a long time to wait to have to start another degree!

    Hope this helps :)

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 55 ✭✭leavo08

Thanks so much! I really needed someone to explain that! It makes it much easier, and I didnt do economics for Leaving Cert so I hadn't realised it had a strong maths element...
Do you know anything about the business studies course in Trinity, do you think I would be better to do it as a base for law than BESS, or should I consider another college? Decisions!

  • Registered Users Posts: 29 jenfiction

I might be wrong but I think if you do pure business in Trinity instead of BESS, you have to take a language aswell. I'm not sure if you get that law module option but a lot of the classes cross over so I'd say so.
Have you considered the new law courses starting in Maynooth this year? Law and business and law and arts? They sound like great courses and the points probably won't be as high as Trinity!

I'm 99.99% sure that RCSI is included in the free fees scheme so it shouldn't cost any more to do the course there than in either TCD or UCC. Put it on that CAO form quick!

no, doing Engineering in Trinity. NUIG is on my CAO so i might end up going there if i don't get Trinity or UCD. NUIG is rly good apparently and the points aren't too bad either. I live in dublin so I haven't heard anything about UCC but i'd say its pretty good. the courses are all basically the same. maybe just choose the college that's more convenient and has the course that you prefer

Yeah, convenience is king. I didn't put UCD up that high because it'd be a nightmare to get to every morning (from Glasnevin) but apparently it's got the best common entry course after TCD... dunno if that'd be worth the 6 o'clock starts though...

Hopefully about the same! I reckon I've got the C3 minimum in maths, but as for the actual points I definitely haven't hit 500 anyways. So fingers crossed...
Do you know what branch you'll probably go into, or are ya like myself with no idea whatsoever?

hopin to do arts next september.. thinking of doind english psychology geography and philosophy? any words of wisdom out there?? :o

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,560 ✭✭✭Squeeonline

Yeah, most arts students are wasters. They complain if they have more than 2lectures in a day. The only ones that have any work are those taking foreign languages. There is a lot of stuff to do and read, but most dont do it.

Think about what you want to do after college. If you want a job in teaching, some specialised subject (like working in archeology), or further research, then arts is for you. If you want something else, do a different degree.

You get one free degree from the state, dont waste it.

What do people think of NUIG?????

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,560 ✭✭✭Squeeonline

NUIG kicks ass. I am going into my second year and I cant wait to get back! Just get involved with stuff like Clubs and Socs and its even better. You will have such a good time.

Down to the beach when the weathers good, in the Roisin/other venue of choice when the weathers bad/wet/good/any excuse at all.

    Is anyone doing this course?...

    I'm 99% sure that's what I'm doing in September!

If anyone has any info on it, like hours, what first year is like, workload, or any recommened reads?...

    ANY INFO will help!

    Cheers!;)

dunnno about ucc but philosophy in maynooth is cool. gets tricky in 2nd year. also if they do logic in philosophy its a bit mathsy but easy when u get the hang of it. defo pick philosophy at least for firrst year.

I started doing a European Studies degree in UL a few years back, I loved history and english in school. However when the course started I certainly enjoyed it but could see no practical use for the degree later on, I didn't want to be a teacher or a journalist etc.

My advice would be to think about what area you want to work in after college, if it relates somehow to the degree or if you have a burning passion to study these subjects then go for it. I knew it wasn't for me so got out quickly.

Went on to do Spatial Planning & Environmental Management in Bolton St, going into 4th yr in Sept and couldn't be happier.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,229 ✭✭✭pathway33

yep and even if u dunno what job you want then do what you love in college because often it's the grade you get that matters and not the subjects. it's very easy to do a 9 month postgrad after your arts degree to get the job you want.

I do NOT think that Arts is a waste of time. I think people are wasting their time while doing it. Arts courses have the potential to be so much, but a lot of people just take it as a doss and do a little as possible. I have a few hard working arts students who actually want something from their degree, not just a piece of paper.

  • Registered Users Posts: 183 ✭✭smcgui

Well I believe arts is what you make it. Of course there are dossers in it, there are dossers in every course out there, it's just arts tends to be so huge that there is an extra amount of dossers in it! :)

I did arts in UCD and it worked terrifically for me. I did English, Economic and Philosophy (Philosophy just for fun for first year as it was one of the few things that fit in my schedule with the other two subjects!). I hadn't a clue what I wanted to do when I finished my leaving cert (nor did I have the points for what I ended up doing now) so it was a great stepping stone. During the degree I learned I wanted to do Marketing. Having the honours arts degree under my belt this allowed me to go on to do a masters in marketing.

Oh and lesson to all Leaving cert students out there who are disappointed, there is always another way to get into something if you really want it. I would never have gotten into a marketing degree from my results (had a bit of a 'whoopsie' during my LC) and now I have a master and a job I love!

Can a pure Philosophy degree lead anywhere?

  • Registered Users Posts: 183 ✭✭smcgui

Not directly I don't think, unless maybe you worked as a researcher into philosophy? But this link shows where it could possibly lead to:http://www.nuigalway.ie/careers/students/pdfs/philosophy.pdf

Thanks. Looks might I might end up doing Philosophy in UCD, even though I only have an interest in it. I only put it down for the craic, man did that backfire!

  • Registered Users Posts: 183 ✭✭smcgui

Oh dearie! Well no panic, it is actually very enjoyable and it is great to help your writing and debating and research skills. Then if you decide to go on and do a postgrad you will find that you are very good at putting strong arguments together when writing dissertations etc!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,208 ✭✭✭Économiste Monétaire

You could always apply for a transfer to general 'Arts' (DN012) and move from SSM Philosophy - assuming you don't like it.

    Monday will tell all.
