Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. No matter which way they slice and dice it, it'll look bad. Maybe change it to just "HITS"?

Dreadful change, I have to say.

    CLS HITS

It's like that even on the fancy car radios which show the name of the song being played.

Have they also changed their 'Classic Hits 4FM' jingle? I liked that, I have to say. Nice retro sound to it! It reminds me very much of the one of a (now defunct) MOTR station I used to listen to when I lived in Germany called MDR LIFE.

I always toggle between 4FM and Nova and I'm happy at that. I don't mind a bit of Boylan, except when he goes off on one about anti-vaxxers yet again. His heart is in the right place, though. Love it when texters troll him saying that he's on 300k a year and he always falls for it. :pac:

Saturday (and Sunday) evenings on 4FM is the absolute business. Uninterrupted music.

A strict diet of 4FM and Nova means never having been exposed to One Direction and the likes!

Change 'er back to 4FM, guys!

Safe to say, I'm a 4FM fan. All radios in the house and in both of our cars are set to it! :)

Think as a radio station its just ok.
Thetes a bit too much chat, and inane chat at that, for my liking.
Never listen to niall boylan. Couldnt take that tbh.
I tune out when the pair on the weekday early mornings start.

Classic hits is such a stupid confusing name for a radio station, especially a radio station with 6 hours of talk per day.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,113 ✭✭✭Maz2016

This name change is a disaster,Classic Hits 4FM was way better

    Dreadful rebrand.

    CLS HITS looks so unprofessional.

Niall hours cut NOooooooooooo love this guy , wish he 'd get a talk show on tv not afraid to speak out.

4FM was a terrible name to start with anyway.

Rds should just read CLASSIC or CLASSICS

"classic Hits" is an awful name for a Radio station and the few people that I know who listen to it still call it 4fm

"Classic Hits" is a very popular name for oldies/CHR formats in many countries.

many stations are not playing as much 60s and 70s now as they used to on their daytime playlists, such as BBC Radio 2

94.8 and 95.4 in Cork have changed, 97.4 is still CLS HITS. 97.4 is also the only one of those carrying track information for music via RT+.

There's a 'programming announcement' coming on Monday morning.

Responses to social media posts say that hopefully Pj & Jim and hoping they ditch Boylan lol

Edit: Nova doing the same thing.

Would Nova & Classic hits be merging to go fully national?

They can't just go off and do it. There would have be a new license advertised by the BAI and then there would have to be an application process.

The thought crossed my mind but as the above poster says, it can't just happen like that. Is it possible to get a national licence confidentially (ie they've gone and secured it?)

Definitely not! That's not how it works. If such a thing happened (which it won't), there would be some serious litigation I would imagine.

What might be announced is a change of schedules and maybe some swapping of presenters. That is allowed,

    Thought so- thanks for confirming.

Presenter/ show swaps seem most likely. More shared content?

I think that is possible. They have common ownership. They do have distinct licenses, and Classic Hits has a wider geographical area, but their music does overlap.

PJ and Jim more suitable to a male focused audience (Novas target?).

I presume they'll have to change their show's music content too.

1st April. A Thursday. The Thursday before Easter weekend. Seems an odd day to make that kind of change...

Would be the worst ever Aprils Fools joke tbf. 3 week notice of moving to a sister station :D

I haven't heard any mention of Colm and Lucy moving to Classic Hits, I really hope that's not true!

I saw Classic Hits posted a video of PJ and Jim's announcement to Facebook but it was deleted rather quickly. I can only guess that it was because the comments were mostly negative.

Never said it was an April Fools joke, merely that the Thursday before Easter is a strange day to make a change affecting a Monday-Friday show.

Just listened back to Nova online, Colm and Lucy are going to Classic Hits... well that's me gone then!

That's ruined my Monday anyway. Its like they are trying to fix nova by taking classic hits best presenters. Classic hits will absolutely loose listeners in the morning now.

When I saw the tweet about the announcement on Friday, I assumed they'd be moving back to the 8-12 slot they had temporarily last year.

Swapping the breakfast shows makes a lot of sense if it goes ahead.
Classic Hits is struggling outside of Dublin,it's listenership is static so something has to change.Colm and Lucys show originally found fame on RTE 2FM which is a national station hence placing them on classic hits,a semi national, may work.

Colm and Lucy on Nova was a bad fit from Day one - Breakfast is king in radio and a weak breakfast show leads to poor figures across the day.
With the two new radio consultants in Castleforbes they made the obvious decision to drop the failing show.
Wake up happy is popular (in Dublin ) and should prove popular on Nova.
The big question is what impact there will be on Classic Hits ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,450 ✭✭✭JoeA3

Oh dear. Last time I heard Colm Hayes on the radio was when he was drearily fumbling through the drive time slot on 2FM after they had booted Will Leahy. He's appalling.

Its a big setback back for Classic Hits imo.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,113 ✭✭✭Maz2016

Oh this is awful. No way will I listen to classic hits now I don’t like Colms style

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,173 ✭✭✭Declan A Walsh

Colm Hayes and Lucy Kennedy have previously been with 2FM, prior to Radio Nova. They worked separately and together during their time on 2FM. Colm has more connections with 2FM, having originally been involved with the station for about a year during the late 1980s.

Colm Hayes spent a number of years, mainly as breakfast show co-host, on Capital Radio/Rock104/FM104. He is particularly associated with the Strawberry Alarm Clock, which he co-presented with Jim-Jim Nugent. They presented a breakfast show on 2FM for a while, before Colm was moved to different slots and Jim-Jim returned to FM104. Lucy Kennedy's only connection with another station that I am aware of is when she was involved with sales for Spin103.

Colm, of course, has plenty of pirate radio experience from the 1980s. He is most associated with the superpirates: Radio Nova, Q102 and Energy 103.

Edit: On the subject of superpirates, in the early days of 4FM, there were a number of presenters that had been involved with the so-called superpirates - Dublin and elsewhere. Over the years, the number of these has dropped. Recently, there were none from that background on Classic Hits. Colm Hayes has brought that number back up to one!

Aaaand there goes the last reason to listen to Classic Hits. :(

Unless of course you're big into Niall Boylan's particular brand of Jeremy Kyle-lite outrage hours.

Bay broadcasting paid for expensive consultants just to tell them that Hayes and Kennedy would be more suited to the 45+ music/chat licence rather than the Rock licence. 🙄

Crap, I used to enjoy Classic hits just for this show.. :(

Think I'll be listening to Nova during breakfast and CH and other stations as I do today via smart speaker outside that.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,101 ✭✭✭Max Headroom

Ah lads..give Colon and Loosey a go..sure you might like their overly scripted Benny Hill/ Chubby Brown humour....:D

  • Moderators, Business & Finance Moderators Posts: 6,543 Mod ✭✭✭✭Sheep Shagger

Strange how there's nothing on either Nova or CHs social media about the change (after posting an announcement on Friday).

The lads this morning were saying listeners had a bit to say via WhatsApp after it went public (presumably not public).
