Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

No it's not. The standing charge works out a tenner cheaper when you factor in the initial payment but they charge €6 for compost when Barna charge €2. Remember the compost bin has to go out every two weeks regardless of how much you use it.

And if not, 250 000 euro fine and/or 3 years in jail!

There's six in my house and two dogs, if I can compost all my peels etc myself there will be no food waste, the dogs get whatever little leftovers there are. So if I put out an empty bin every two weeks will I still get charged? Tried ringing barna on Friday, left a voicemail because they didn't pick up, they never rang back, not that I'm surprised. You don't need customer service when the customer has no choice.

Having studied it a bit better, Barna seems to be the best priced of a bad lot for people who don't put out their bins often!

All of this confusion about the food waste bin driving me crazy. Greenstar never even mentioned it in their letter about the new rates, and have not provided this bin. Though I live in the town so not sure if I am in one of the areas required, but I thought 'Sligo Borough area' meant town. Anyway, no effin way I am paying 6 euro to have it taken away if it is not full. I just can't see this working between standing charges, forced biweekly collections, confusion over everything, they're going to have major hassle getting people to do what they want and pay what they want. Rubbish should not be this difficult! When I lived in the US your taxes paid for the bin collecting, you seperated your recycling, put the whole lot out and you didn't have to think about it at all. When I moved back I thought the buying a bag or tag thing was ridiculous, but this new system being forced on us just goes beyond the beyond. The only way they can make this work is if the food bin is included with the standing charges. I know Barna is only 2 euro but I wouldn't be keen on paying a 20 euro charge in one go every three months. I can't afford to top up my phone 20 at a time even though I get unlimited any network texts and same network calls for it, I sure as hell am not paying 20 euro just for nothing at all other than the privilege of paying them another fee per lift of my bin.

Either they include the forced collection of food bins in the standing charge or they do away with the standing charge and have it be a true pay per lift service, even if the cost is a bit more per lift. Otherwise it is too expensive, too confusing and just unfair to the consumer. In any case, you can't force people to pay for and put out a bin if they are not using it, and unless it is really cheap people just won't use it, and I doubt they will be wanting to clog up the court system with ordinary law abiding people disputing fines over their rubbish collecting.

The new system is a farce, another legacy issue from our "fine" ex-county manager  - the information being given out only adds to the confusion and the wording on the local authority websites would make your eyes bleed from trying to decipher it. What is it going to take for people in this country to stand up and say "we've had enough" ?

I got this letter in the door from my refuse company last week ,which mentioned the three bins. It was only because of reading this thread that I thought to check the areas which need the 3rd bin and discovered that I am actually NOT in a 3-bin area. The leaflet definitely made me think that I was, but looking at the maps here (scroll down the page a bit), I discovered that it doesn't stretch out as far as where I live. So at least I have one less thing to think about.

Still none-the-wiser though as to which is the best option for me. I generally only need to leave my normal bin out every 4 weeks and one recycling bag every 2 weeks, and I compost the rest.

So Sligo Town doesn't need to put out food bin every 2 weeks?
Sorry I just don't get it at all now - we took the food bin few months ago and it is fine for us but putting it out every 2 weeks is to stupid.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,917 ✭✭✭red sean

    Thanks for the link TheQ47.
One of the things I can't grasp is why is a 3 bin system necessary in some areas and not others.
Thankfully I'm also outside the brown bin area!

loki, Here's the map for the Sligo Town area. Anywhere inside the shaded area must have the 3 bins.

But do we have to put them out every 2nd week - or is it only outside town?

Looks to me like they must be put out every 2nd week, no matter where you live, see here. In particular, Question 6, which reads:

Why has the 3rd bin (Food Waste/Bio-degradable Waste) to be collected fortnightly? It may not be full, therefore why can I not wait until it is full?
This is a requirement under the Waste Management (Food Waste) Regulations 2009 and also the European Union (Household Food Waste & Bio-waste) Regulations 2013. Apart from its requirement in legislation, the rationale behind collection of this waste type on a fortnightly basis is to ensure the waste undergoes the best possible treatment at a composting facility. It is more difficult to compost this waste type if it is left too long before collection. It becomes a rancid product and also increases odour and nuisance issues for the customer.

I signed up today, in Barnas unit in Wine Street car park, went with their option 3.Paid €20 and they wanted another €30 to keep the account in credit. They will 'chip' your existing bin if you dont want to have another one around the house ( if your bin is falling to bits then avail of their new one). Place was packed with people signing up to them!

The state of the Irish public. Complain about every new tax and price hike for about two days then go and queue to sign up for it.

  • Registered Users Posts: 395 ✭✭barneyrub

I think people are perhaps panicking a little if there was a queue to sign up.

The old system is being phased out from this weekend but you can still use them up until the end of March. I'll be getting enough bags this week to last until then and then choose my provider.

Sligo Co Co have said all collectors must offer a pay per weight /lift system but Mcgrath have said they are not so I'm hoping by March they might be

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,761 ✭✭✭AgileMyth

3rd of February. Allow for them running out before that. They won't want to get caught with bags they're not allowed sell and you can be sure Barna won't take the hit on them.

Could you still put food waste in the general waste bin?

I can't figure out how to use the food waste bin hygienically. I don't want to have the bin in the kitchen for 2 weeks. I don't even want food waste in the kitchen for a day. Do I need to use a slop bucket?! Obviously you couldn't use bin liners in a small food waste bin in the kitchen. Would it be handier to get a pig?

How will you lot be doing it?

  • Registered Users Posts: 395 ✭✭barneyrub

They had no Barna bags yesterday evening in centra Collooney, had plenty of mcgraths.

You can get biodegradable bin liners for the brown bin but don't know about cost. Def won't be having the bin in the kitchen for 2 weeks.. It'd be rank esp in the summer!
Not exactly sure how we'll work it

I signed up on Monday and they said the bins will be delivered within 2 to 3 weeks and a prepay card should arrive next week!

SF local election hopeful Thomas Healy is holding a meeting tomorrow (Fri 31st Jan) in the Teeling cantre, Collooney about the new bin charges. Apparently representatives from Barna, Greenstar and Sligo Co.Co will be there to answer questions. Could just be another session of hot air and vote grabbing either, might be worth the trip if anyone wants questions answered. Unfortunatly I'm away tomorrow, would be there for sure to get closure on this 'food bin' bulls**t.

I agree regarding most councillors but if he gets Barna and Greenstar and Sligo CoCo reps in the same room at least you get to ask them some proper questions, just ignore him.

I'd say you are right.Better things to do than listen to a load of spin from the shiny reps of each Org.Enough S""t in the bins without them clogging our heads with more of it.

I know people who produce a lot of waste who reckon that the new price structure will save them money.

However, I produce very little waste. Last year it cost me around €60 to have my waste collected.

If I produce the same amount of waste this year it is going to cost me €140+.

So, those who produce very little waste are being punished, while those producing lots of waste will be rewarded.

That's the opposite of what waste management is supposed to be about.

    It's a fúking joke.

I signed up with McGrath's yesterday. My recycling bin was delivered today. I already have a normal bin from them. They don't have the brown bins yet. It's costing €27 a month, no standing charge, no overweight charge. It's saving me a few euro a month.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 654 ✭✭✭thebuzz

Hopefully an alternative to Barna and Greenstar takes a chance to move into the Sligo Town area. They could clean up if they undercut the other two. McGrath's aren't currently in the Sligo area.

Does anyone know what happens if you don't actually put out the compost bin every fortnight? I think you can be fined by the council? But realistically I don't know how they'd enforce a fine for the potentially many people who won't.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 502 ✭✭✭Seamus1964

How long is a contract valid?
3 month or 12 month or lifetime?
Lets say I will pay 3 month fee to Barna ( 20 euro ) and they deliver bins (green, blue, brown) to my house but later on better deal comes up and I want to change service provider or service package...? New bins? Old bins? Termination fees? Penalty points? What if I do not pay (lets say forget to pay) for next 3 month 20 euro fee - would they force me to pay fee or fine me or what will happen?

Agreed. There should be an alternative in ALL areas but the Council have created monopolies in most area eg Grange residents must use Greenstar yet Donegal Waste Disposal Ltd operate just North of the village. Why cannot they move into the area too?

Dubliners get a choice of refuse collector - why not Sligonians?

You can bring your waste to a recycling centre/waste disposal site (like greenstar have on the Quays), you must keep all receipts for 3 years and be able to present them if asked. AFAIK

I got another leaflet in the door from McGraths today. This one had prices on it; there's only 2 options:
    • Option 1- €275 (€27.50/m) 1x 240L Green bin, 1x240L Blue bin, 1x240L Brown bin
    • Option 2- €240 (€24/m) 1x140L Green bin, 1x240L Blue bin, 1x240L Brown bin

    Note this is for March-December

I have a feeling they were waiting for Barna to release their prices. Either way I'm not signing up with them as they're more expensive than Barna. Do Greenstar collect south of Sligo town?

  • Registered Users Posts: 395 ✭✭barneyrub

Ya, mcgraths are only offering a flat fee which they're not supposed to. I emailed the council and got this reply :
'We are still in discussions with some of the Waste Collectors in regard to their payment structures and offering more options for their customers in compliance with the new regulations.  It is a requirement of the Bye-Laws to offer a ‘pay per weight’ and ‘pay per lift’ option.  McGraths at the moment seem to be offering only the flat fee which is something they will need to address.
However, if you wish to register as soon as possible, perhaps you might consider Barna Waste?  They have a range of options available in compliance with the new requirements.  Whoever you decide to go with, I would advise you to buy a surplus supply of pre-paid bags from your retailer before Monday as they will not be available following this.  Bags can be presented for Waste Collection until your supply runs out or alternatively if the required bins have been delivered to your home and you still have bags, your Waste Collector will take your bags off you and credit your account in return.'

Greenstar don't operate out here and I'm waiting to see if mcgraths come back with anything better before signing up with Barna

I got the same leaflet too and when I saw the prices I threw it straight in the bin. Its nothing short of a bloody joke and the waste companies must think that all their Christmasses have come at once if they honest to God think we can even afford to pay these absolute ridiculous prices. I dont know about a green bin, a blue bin and a brown bin, for 240 Euro I would want a 24 carot gold bin!!!!
