One thing that strikes me in the closer charts is this.

Higher pressure over Ireland. Hpa of over 1014 is not good for precip. While we may have a cold air mass moving in from the east, if the pressure is too high, then any showers will be light flurries delivering nothing past the westlink on the M50, never mind getting into the heartlands of Laois!

MET IE have issued this 3-day:

    3 Day Outlook:
Friday will be a mostly cloudy, breezy day with a fresh to strong westerly wind later veering west to northwest. There will be some rain at times, but it clear from the north during the evening. Frost likely Friday night. Saturday and Sunday will be brighter, but much colder days with sunny periods and a few scattered showers, some wintry in places.

1014mb is well unstable enough to produce hefty showers
although i do agree that precipitation could be a
problem away from eastern counties. Of course
you have to throw in the fact that there is likely
to be a few disturbances that will bring widespread snow.

1014mb is well unstable enough to produce hefty showers

for a change :D I'd tend towards weathercheck on that definition.

1014 is just on the upper ranges of what is acceptable for a shallow area of low pressure often associated with a trough of convection Irish sea showers.

They were quite common in the Easterlies of the 80's and often delivered 6 or 8 inches of snow at sea level in louth meath Dublin Wicklow and wexford.

They dont tend to travel very far inland though iirc

I seen it for instance to be very snowy here and ten miles inland the sun would be out and there wouldnt be a flake.
One example when I was in school in Arklow it snowed heavily all day dumping a couple of inches. Some of the lads that lived on the higher ground ten miles inland were wondering if they were able to get home.It turned out that the sun had been shining there all day and there was no snow.
The wonders of nature as recently, for any significant snow the higher ground is the only certain place to have it-back then for whatever reason it was often different.

I'm still not calling this by the way untill the fat lady has her tonsils out...

I dunno, Christmas 1995 and the first week or so of 1996 was the last time a eaterly delivered good widespread snow, enough ice days to count on both your hands and feet.

Yes thats correct but iirc that was more of a northerly than an Easterly.
I know Scotland had record low temps and the heavy snow came out of an atlantic weather system that moved in.
That system turned to Rain though before it ended and temps got up into the low teens that night.

It started around the 20th or 21st and went on for ages!

    I think it was a NE'ly.

Was the best cold spell I can recall, excl 1987.

And followed a great summer 1995. What a year 1995 was for weather!

It was a northerly and a mainly dry one for down here with us anyway untill the Atlantic system came.
It was the last time I recall ice hard enough to walk on.
Norhterlys arent good for the southeast for obvious reasons.
The snow which turned to rain during New Years day came on new years eve, but the cold northerly lasted from a day or two before Xmas ie more than a week.
Wales as usual and especially that time stole most of the Irish sea snow showers.

It was an amazing cold spell!

I don't think temps got above 0c or 2c for the whole period. New Years Eve was snowy.

    8/10 go for a bitter 10day + cold spell :D

The English MetO break the ice...

    From the metoffice:

    News release

    Winter sharpens its claws

    16 February 2005

Snow, sub-zero temperatures and ice look set to hit Britain next week as weather patterns line up to give many of us the most significant period of winter weather yet this season.
The winter so far has been a mild one, with average temperatures across the UK some 2 °C above average. However, as signs of spring breakout across the country, forecasters at the Met Office are predicting the cold and potentially snowy weather to arrive through the weekend, with the risk of disruption from snow and ice lasting into next week.

I see from reading both TWO and netweather that all the talk of snow seems to be reserved for the east of the UK, should I assume that Ireland won't see any then? - Or does the Irish sea benefit us in this respect?

Would be terrible to have all this build up then only to watch reports on UK TV of snow all over the place and us with nothing!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,913 ✭✭✭Danno

Rightio, across the internet, various forums, weather websites and official Met Offices have been taking a cautious, but collective agreement on the quite likely development of a substantial cold spell developing across North Western Europe over the weekend and on into next week

But, as we all know, these are UK websites and generally do not include Ireland in issuing forecasts, or don't do so in any great detail.

So, how will this cold event unfold, how will it affect Ireland?

Well, here are my thoughts and opinions:

Friday sees a cold front hovering across the centre of Ireland bringing drizzle and the odd pocket of heavy rain especially to E areas.

This front will push south later into the night, but as it does so, I expect an intense burst of rain over the East, and with cold air already in the north, this cuts in to the rain band and could give sleety conditions for a time.

Into Saturday, and a cold N wind takes over, giving wintry showers to N and NE coasts.

But it is later on on Sunday, when we see a NE coming into line, and a trough of showers will cross N Cenrtal UK, and picking up more steam over the Irish sea. Late in Sunday evening, I expect this line to push over much of Eastern Ireland and into the midlands bringing snowfall for most areas.

Monday sees a repeat performance, but with overcast conditions, the cold will stay in and very little thawing will take place. I expect rather cloudy and flurry style conditions to persist for some days after.

The NW, W and SW will not have much snowfall, and it might not be cold enough there for some. They will enjoy more crisp cool and sunny conditions as they will be closer to the high pressure.

    More Later!

RTE Weather forecast after 6.1 news talks about possible wintry showers in the North East of the country late Sunday. Looks like Scotland is going to cop whatever is going.

Although eastern england will be the are worst affected
Eastern Ireland will get its fair bucket. Snow showers on
eastern coasts pushing inland at time with some period
of more widespread and prolonged snow. Dont be
paranoid, we'll see our fair share of cold weather
and the worst cold spell for a couple of years. There
will snow and i promise that ;)

Extreme Western areas might not fair well though ;)

Great fun to see the development of all this, currently looks like Monday is the day for Dublin /east coast snow fall ..

Sunday ...probably cool and cloudy early ..becoming colder and more cloudy..temps in the daytime about 5-7 in Dublin, dropping as the day goes on. Possible sleet followed by snow late Sunday into Monday ..accumulations ..likely away from coastal areas ..depths of 1-2cm possibly , coastal areas unlikely to see much in the way of accumulations, and what does settle will probably melt in a few hours but there is an outside chance (would say about 10% of more significant falls and accumulations even in coastal areas).
All in all a suprisingly wintery scene given the last few years weather, dont see this as being anything like a proper siberian spell like in the 80's , but when recent winters are compared ..it will be a nice change..heres hoping for a day of work on Monday ;)

So with me living in Lusk about maybe 4 miles tops from the coast I may not see much snow settling  Ah well, seeing some falling might do

Guess we will just have to wait and see.

In these kind of conditions >1 mile from is coast is often the difference between rain and snow, several weeks back when we had snow here falling in Rathgar and settling on car roofs , grass etc ..a short drive into the city center and the coastal suburbs and it was raining !!
I would say places like Tallaght maybe Lusk etc have a great chance of seeing snowfall on Sunday and Monday!

Well well more great runs tonight :D

looking quite dry at times though.

Western areas may stay less cold.

But i'm trying to be negative :D

Stunning runs and the cold to arrive from
    Saturday evening. :)

Eastern areas always coldest and with the highest
risk of snow. Interesting developments around the 120hr
mark through a little low to the west of Ireland and pushing south
and east, could be some snow with that :D

Night all excellant agreement that this is the real stuff :D

Yes saw that at 10:30 last night on BBC1.
I noticed yer man was trying not to smile when he mentioned Easterlies and snow in the one sentence...
He didnt try very hard :D

the BBC forecasters never mention Snow showers in the Irish sea unless they are heading into Wales.
Any that are around on monday or Tuesday have no place to go to on those days except Ireland-they must go where the wind sends them :D

Well Felix I have news for you...
    Winter is far from over.
Last night it snowed here after an effort and looking at the charts well I'll get on to them in a minute because as I type theres a hail/sleet shower here too.

Temp rose to 7c in the sunshine here today and now its back to 4c in the dullness and the shower.

The charts are showing a bitter northerly and a hint of an Easterly coming back next week-outside reliable timing but only just.

Now have a look at what maybe is upwind if that happens...

Lots of cold air about with the possibility be 50/50 atm

Just saw the weather on six one, and they seemed to suggest that low to the NE could make its way to here yet. As for snow on monday weathercheck, I think you'll have to move to donegal to have any chance.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,811 ✭✭✭✭billy the squid

    http://www.wetterzentrale.de/pics/Rtavn1381.gif

its far ahead in the next week but given that irish1 suggested that it is possible thought I would show this. polar low. but at the moment its in FI so i would want to see it in more runs than just one.

Its looking like there is going to be a break in the cold for the weekend and bitterly cold again by the middle ofnext week.

will that polar low materialise and bring more snow, we will have to just wait and see.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,780 ✭✭✭✭ninebeanrows

Hi Billy i think the charts are misleading you..

    A chart like this
    http://www.wetterzentrale.de/pics/Rtavn421.gif

Has little bearing on the temperatures at sea level
    http://www.wetterzentrale.de/pics/Rtavn422.gif

Weather this weekend will be colder then the weather has been all week :)

Overnight minima will be well below freezing

    -6c possible..

Next week will be cold again and unsettled

That "polar low" is not such ;)
