Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Genuinely sad to hear this but not too surprised as it was well known he has been ill for some time. For anyone who's 40+ in this country he is a big part of their childhood memories. We only had 2 channels FFS and Gaybo dominated. The Toy Show is part of Irish legend and he started it.

The current incumbent isn't fit to lick his boots but I'm sure he'd be the first to admit it.

    A true professional.

Best memory of that unreal Late Late show postcard winner phone call who won the car... but turned out her daughter was killed by a car walking home the night before.

Gay just talked to her like a friend and got a priest or poet who happened to be on the panel (not sure) to say a few words.

    It was poignant and heartbreaking.

I shudder to think how the current crop of 'entertainers' would handle it.

I posted it above. Gaybo asked her "why did she die?" which got a response of "are you being funny?"

Whatever you think of him (his interviews with Annie Murphy and Sinead O'Connor were awful) he was a broadcasting colossus that helped modernise the State.

To those using this thread to speak ill of the deceased or of anybody who now does his job, it reflects more poorly on you then on anybody you may be targeting.

One of the greatest examples of giving a fella enough rope ever witnessed on live TV

Probably the most shameful character assassination of a chatshow guest Ive ever witnessed, Gaybo buddies with Casey of course.

I read somewhere though that he knew full well afterwards he had messed up that night and the interview was a disaster.

Whatever your opinion of him, best to leave it at the door. This is a thread of condolences really. No need for it.

    RIP Gaybo

did you say that about Jimmy saville too ?

He used to come into the service station that was out in Howth many years ago on his Harley and expected petrol for free. My brother who worked there wasn't having any of it.

In my opinion does not mean the truth.

The Jimmy Saville connection is just strange. Don't want to derail this thread.

The man as well as the Late Late show did an incredible job of talking about certain topics that were never discussed before transforming modern society.

    An Irish legend.

Unprofessional on occasion if he disliked the person being interviewed or indeed if he liked them too much.

On the contrary, his shunning of Gerry Adams like a rabid dog remains one of the highest points in LLS history!

Met him once, gang of us were waiting outside the Gresham in '88, in our sleeveless denim jackets and skags, for Metallica and out he came. Stopped and chatted with us all, asking who we were waiting for, autographing a few of our tickets. A genuine gent if ever there was one and of course a fantastic broadcaster.

    RIP.

Absolute ****e talk - The Annie Murphy will be held up as the worst. That was more down to the audience members contributing. But if that was a negative - just off the top of my head
    - the lovely paternal way he dealt with Sinead O Connor on the Late late show a few years ago after his retirement.
    - The brilliance with how he recovered live on air with the lady who's daughter had just died
    - The topics he tackled head on
    - He was a brilliant moderator - My favourite exchange :
"Gays" were being discussed and someone made a comment about "men who are besotted with other mens back passages" to which Gaybo said "I suppose to reposte to that is what about me who are besotted with womens front passages?.."
    - So many brilliant interviews and conversations

    What a legend

A consummate broadcaster equally brilliant on TV and Radio. Could handle serious and light material with equal aplomb. Ireland grew up as a society partially thanks to the Late Late Show. He, Sir Terry and Brian Farrell were a trio of superb broadcasters in a class of their own. RIP Gay

I just don't understand people coming onto a thread about his passing and saying "he was full of ****", "up his own arse"

The media went to sleep for the best part of a century here regarding all things Church related and Gaybo was no different. Showing a condom on live TV does not make one the iconoclast some seem to think he was. He may skirted around some religious issues like single mothers but it was never the critique it should have been of church thinking, from one of the very few in the country who had the platform to do so.

An absolute natural when it came to judging when to prod, when to gently interject or when to sit back and let a guest in full flow have the limelight for as long as they delivered.

I've an awful feeling those with petty gripes hereabouts will attempt to belittle the man but let them at it.

An absolute colossus of a broadcaster, who was renowned well beyond these shores for the mastery of his craft.

A life well lived, thanks Gay.

A guy made for radio in particular but also TV. Always asked the questions people wanted to know the answers to and was always able to find the humour and sadness in other people's stories.

    RIP.

Rubbish, that condom segment was a massive two fingers to them. The church had a strangled-hold on most things at the time, including RTE. Could have easily ended up getting the boot over that. I was young at time but I remember my father explaining the context of it to me. Nobody else would have done that.

That's weird phrasing. Isn't it always live? Plus in context, this is the one time a compilation of recordings might be more appropriate?

It was some show alright. Gabo was really wound up and had a slew of Gerry haters on the panel. He was glaring at Adams like the devil had arrived in person in Montrose and of course he refused to shake the hand of his guest, he even stood away from Adams to distance himself from Beelzebub. Gaybo really made a show of himself. Adam's swotted Gay and the panel away like flies. It was one of those occasions when Gaybos political and class bias got in the way of his professionalism and he ended up looking like a bitter has-been.

He was a pretty good broadcaster in many respects , a lot better than the RTE crew today.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 19,192 ✭✭✭✭Strazdas

I think his greatest contribution to Irish society was smashing through taboos and sacred cows.

The country was repressed to the extreme but he took it all on (it probably would have happened eventually anyway but he speeded things up),

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,640 ✭✭✭SHOVELLER

That is sad and he will be missed. An Irish icon and always thought his interviewing style was superb and he had a skill that is sorely missed today. He was a good listener.

But most of all I will miss his laugh. A very infectious laugh out loud laugh!

    RIP Gaybo

Well his handlers must have chilled him afterwards because that seems to have been the peak of his iconoclasm, went to bat for Casey and the Church when Casey scandal emerged.
