    10am
    Belmullet gusting 53 knots
    Mace head gusting 53 knots.

Lots of power out across Mayo along with various roads closed due to fallen trees.

My biggest concern with these winds is that like a similar event back in the early 10s, that the now budding green leaves will be turned black once again and leave us with another colourless summer ahead, just as we are coming out of what was a colourless winter and spring.

Huge amounts of leaf loss here in South Dublin, the ground is like autumn with the amount of them.

Loads of leaves on the ground here too in cork city. Seems to have gotten even gustier in the last hour, think it's just less time between the gusts!

Not a pleasant morning here in Meath, ground is drying out and the sun is coming out but it's very windy and cool.

Now that we've had our rain and far too much wind, another month of dry, settled and warm weather please! The majority of the next 7 to 14 days looks largely dry thankfully, especially in the east.

Pretty much a country wide yellow wind warning from met eairann.

Turned out very windy after all.

Next week is looking less dry for those of us away from the east and southeast.

could be a bit more showery next Thursday as we start to see a cooling trend as we head towards June. Overall we stay under the influence of ridging but we are very close to those cool Atlantic systems which may impact us slightly at times.

64kts gust at Sligo Airport at 2:30pm.

Very windy in West Clare today, fairly constant but particularly rough the last half an hour and for a time this morning. Haven't seen wind like this in quite a while.

Cooler for the west, these endless easterlys haven't been warm on the east coast, bring back the westerlies in my back garden!

Have a weather station?, why not join the Ireland Weather Network - http://irelandweather.eu/

feck this wind - just go away!

All my young plants bending over, a few actually blown out of the soil or broken at the base. Young trees taking a right bashing too, huge leaf loss. Hate wind at this time of the year, hard on nature.

with no easterlies for the next while, the coming week should be warmer overall for the east. Even today is milder than many of the day's over recent weeks due to the lack of that easterly wind. However I'd prefer a cool but dry easterly wind over today's muck and stormy gales. Very hard to win at this time of the year, the easterly wind is nice and dry but can be very chilly and the westerly is a warmer wind but has all the unsettled conditions to go with it.

So for us looking for dry days next week in the west is there any good news? Just a couple of days ago met eireann had us down for a dry and settled early start to the week

western areas could have rain or showers on Monday but should be dry Tuesday and Wednesday. The unsettled conditions for Thursday may not happen till Friday, so Thursday could be a mainly dry day too. Next weekend could become unsettled again in western areas but that is along way off and it could end up being a dry weekend, would need a few more days to see about that.

The wind is much stronger than I expected today, the trampoline net did come down! Sustained winds approx 50km/h around 3pm, and gusts to 91km/h according to Met Eireann. Our garden is a bit of a mess with leaves from the Ash Trees. This picture is from the calm before the storm :)

similar here at Dunshaughlin. We've had some very nice spells of decent sunshine between the showers but we've had 2 very heavy showers and a few short ones. If it wasn't for the showers and gusty winds today would have been a lovely day, as there has been plenty of sunshine.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,047 ✭✭✭appledrop

I know its May but today reminds me of April Showers.

Lovely + sunny one minute then lashing rain the next. Looking out out front window right know its looks lovely × sunny but the rain is pelting off the back window.

Wind was ferocious today. First time I had to drive for work + wasnt a good day to get back into it! Heart was in my mouth a number of times on motorway with very dodgy weaving trucks in that wind.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,475 ✭✭✭✭Thelonious Monk

Even though it was warm enough and some nice blue skies, the howling wind put me off going jogging or doing anything today really. I forgot how much I detest blustery crap weather like this!

Looks like summer may be on the way, and the best time of year for it too

    ECM1-120.GIF?22-0

Hopefully we can lock this high pressure in for a while, not certain, it could hang around or break down quickly but that's a nice starting point.

the latest GFS is an upgrade as well for high pressure to dominate into the first week of June, I really hope it's right.

If todays ECM and GFS are correct there won't be much rain over the next 14 days with eastern areas in particular looking very good. If we can park the high over us for the majority of the next few weeks then there should be very little annoying blips from the Atlantic.

    From met eireann

The strongest mean wind speed and wind gust for the month of May was recorded on this day back in 2011 at our weather stations in Malin Head, Co. Donegal and Belmullet Co.MayoThe recorded values were

Mean Wind Speed: 55kt or 102km/h

On the same day, the strongest wind gust for the month of May was recorded at our weather station in Belmullet, Co. Mayo.

The recorded value was 78kt or 145km/h.

Remember that day in 2011 well, it was the day of my last ever college exam and the lights went out!

The same event that lead to all the leaves being wind burned for the whole summer as onieric mentioned

Today is the end of the brief blip of muck for many. Tomorrow will be much improved across the country with temperatures possibly reaching 20 or 21C in places and some nice sunshine. Monday will be an east/west split with some rain and cooler conditions in western areas while the east will be dry, fairly warm and sunny at times. From Tuesday it looks mostly dry and relatively warm across the country, could be a bit cloudy in the northern half of the country on Tuesday. Wednesday to next weekend included look very good, high pressure over the country and temperatures generally 17 to 22C. It certainly won't be a heatwave but it will be extremely pleasant just about everywhere.

  • Moderators, Science, Health & Environment Moderators Posts: 16,959 Mod ✭✭✭✭Gonzo

not a nice day in Meath, showers are lighter but much more frequent than yesterday, lots of gusty squalls of mist and drizzle, temperatures down on yesterday as well, currently a chilly 13C. Fire will be lit this evening. Probably the poorest day we've had here since May 1st.

Yeah and the wind yesterday and today between the few showers has nearly dried up whatever rain we did get

Think it was late June before water pressure was reduced in 2018.

It's a lot drier, earlier this year.

We are a month ahead in conditions and no real heat yet.

Yesterday and today have reminded me how much I hate strong Atlantic winds. I think it’s actually worse when we have these cool blustery days in the summer. Continental air come at us please!

Blustery day in Dublin. Dry and mild but the wind would put you off going out. Good forecast at least

Whenever I need to remind myself when the Heatwave of 2018 really kicked off I just have to Google the Taylor Swift concert at Croke Park. Cousin, his wife and kids were over on holidays from Perth in Oz and another relative bought them tickets to Taylor Swift in Croker. Never could get him to believe us when we told him that 26ºc here could be like 35ºc+ over in Perth due to the humidity and it certainly didn't look like this holiday was going to change his mind as they were all dressed up in their Winter Woolies...literally....for the concert. Light jacket weather for us. However a day or two after that concert they headed off to Galway to be greeted by blue skies and 30ºc. He finally understood what we meant as he was melting in Galway at 30ºc like he would in 40ºc Perth Heat.....and nowhere over here has Aircon!! LOL.

So yeah, Summer 2018 kicked into high gear about the 18th of June.

The corrollory is true also due to the humidity. Uncle has lived in Edmonton in Canada for decades. Exact same line of latitude as Dublin but in the centre of the continent where a normal Winters day could be minus 20-25ºc. He's never as cold there as when he comes back to Ireland some Christmases. ie. He feels a lot colder on a drab damp +4ºc Winters day in Ireland than he does on a -20ºc day in Edmonton.

2 degrees here is often worse than -20 in Calgary and 25 and muggy here is worse than 40 there.

Strange weather we have here on the edge of the Atlantic.

We had an inch over the last few days.
I was in the veg garden and looked under the wood chips in the beds. Soil is soaked. 6 inches outside the bed is bone dry.

I'll be glad when today is over and we can resume a dry and relatively settled pattern. I do not like Atlantic conditions like today at all, keeps me inside all day long. Today feels more like late October or early November, cold, damp and very windy at times. The Atlantic can pack it's bags till next October and i'd be well happy! The Atlantic can also get lost again from mid November and i'd be even more happy!

It only amounted to 8.8mm here in Kilkenny at my location.
Hopefully June will turn wet and warm.

I'd love a situation where it was just the east and west got rain and we got some more dry days down here in the south, we've had enough rain! Had it while ye were beginning the drought and we got plenty the other day! Sun please! :)

I'd be happy if the rain only fell at night. Not sure why people are dying to get more rain, we had almost 8 continuous months of it up to the beginning of March. Sure the past 2 months have been rather dry and we may have another few dryish weeks to come. The long term charts are signaling a return of the annual very unsettled conditions for end of July and August especially, by then we will all be sick of the rain again.

I mean in cork at least, our average for may is basically the same as the last 4 years according to the Met Eireann data. (Obviously location dependent, north cork had less I think). Actually had more this year then May 2019 and May 2017, April is adding up to the mean amount generally according to the data too)

East and west definitely need it though, the east definitely is parched

Thats the dream  Once it starts it never stops though :( . Rain from like 11pm - 6am and then sun and then back to rain would be ideal :P Definitely sick of the rain with the over 240 days of rain we had before. Was nearly constant!
