Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. JTB suffer from having so many players away with the county team. Whoever beats them will win the intermediate championship.

I wouldn't rule Moorefield out of the running in the senior. They are capable of grinding most teams down. I think Sarsfields will miss Gary White the further the championship goes on with Earley looking likely to hang up his boots shortly sadly. Athy are probably worthy favourites now. Celbridge and Larries have the squads to take out one of those three but I'm not sure they can go all the way. Carbury have been in the last two finals but that defeat on Sunday will take some recovering from to say the least!

I bet you're happy enough with that draw Klairondavis. :D

Sarsfields v Athy is a tasty fixture.

Local derby sure. Form book goes out the window!

Athy/Sash definitely the standout tie in the senior championship, JTB/Towers in the intermediate.

Excellent win for the hurlers down in Arklow yesterday. Through to the semi final now against Kerry.

Minors were predictably well beaten by Kilkenny but hopefully the experience will stand to them in the future.

Dermot Earley officially announces his retirement. What a legend he has been! Good luck to him in his future.

    What a footballer earley was..

Talking to a few (supporters) :@ earlier and they were slating earley for stepping down FFS that man gave everything he had to Kildare he is an absolute gentleman too. I swiftly told those fair weather fans they had not got a clue what dermot did for the county he is an icon..

Thank you for the memories dermot I wish you well!! And you were a beast at fielding in midfield.

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,101 ✭✭✭klairondavis

The man gave it everything in a white shirt for 16 years. It's been a privilege to have witnessed so many great displays. You could go to the ends of Ireland and not find a nicer man than Dermot. A truly great ambassador for the county.

Well said. It's a great pity he never got his hands on an elusive All Ireland. He is one player who truly deserved it.

Like father like son. I doubt he'll let it define him.

Earley will be considered one of the best midfielders kildare have ever had. Its a pity that injury plagued him for the past few years. That said he went through alot of operations and pain just to pull on a white shirt. Lesser men would have thrown in the towel years ago.
I hope that he stays in the kildare set up for the future.

Sad to see Earley being forced to retire - read an article about him this week and how the injuries have completely crippled him, so much so that he could hardly walk. Pity he is not ending it on his terms, but thats the way things go unfortunately

Hope Dermot mantains a presence in the dressing room, an inspiration to many players on the panel. An absolute gent, I wish him all the best.

    No.

Very short answer there Klarion. You're usually well informed when it comes to the Kildare GAA scene.

    Any truth in this rumour?

If that's true, it's bad form. He did play a challenge game for Kildare against Waterford last week.

    Annddd here comes Mr.Cavan..

    It wouldn't be a surprise.

At a time when one of our greatest ever servants has retired, I cannot be bothered discussing Seanie Johnston all over again. People have made their beds, they'll have to lie in them now.

Great photo here of Earley and McGeeney going at it back in their day.

Great photo. The reaction to this announcement shows how the respect for Dermot transcends county rivalries, just like his father. It's a shame we won't see him in a white jersey soaring to the clouds to catch a kickout anymore.

DE was the featured guest on Monday nights Off The Ball. He was on for the first two hours of the show, talking about himself, his recent injury & retirement, and other sporting stories of the day. The podcast should be up on the Newstalk website soon, if its not up already. He acquitted himself well. Wouldn't be surprised at all if he gets invited back on a more frequent basis. He has a lot more to offer than that Parkinson muppet imo.

Johnston didnt line out in the club championship because of hamstring injury. He also didnt play any part in the challenge match v Galway in moorefield either.
http://www.kildare-nationalist.ie/2013/05/20/good-news-for-geezer-as-injury-worries-ease/ Mcgeeney talks about kildare's injuries including Seanies in this.

I'll look forward to hearing that, never knew he was on. He was on KFM this morning talking about his whole career. I've met him a couple of times and he is a total gent of a man. I really don't get the appeal of Colm Parkinson, the man was never a great footballer, he wouldn't be fit to lace Earley's boots.

    Is that you, Seanie!?

Anyways, yeah, there's always going to be a lot of black rumours floating around after the whole transfer business so I wouldn't believe much of anything I hear on that front without multiple confirmations.

I heard Johnston played a half during the challenge match against Waterford at the weekend. His availability for St Kevin's is their business alone but I would suggest they'll need him against Monasterevin or else they will be battling relegation again.

Leper played at centre back which is an interesting and potentially quite positive development. If he could solve that problem position Kildare would be in quite decent shape. Kildare play Roscommon either tonight or tomorrow night. The team captain for the championship will also be revealed before the Offaly match. The captaincy was rotated during the league.

You said you wouldn't be surprised if Johnston had shown a poor attitude towards his club though, just wondering was there any reason behind you saying that?

I know a guy in Kevin's and he said he was seriously annoyed over Johnstons availability for Kevin's.

Klairon has a point without Johnston Kevin's will have backs against the wall against monasterevin they are a lovely little footballing outfit.

Last thing we need is more Johnston crap though.

But my opinion is Johnston should have been left where he was. I am seriously against him taking a native Kildare mans spot. Although kavanagh is out this year doesn't matter we should be vetting kildare men for the counties future IMO.

Your opinion has changed over the past twelve months then? Last year iirc you proclaimed Johnston a Lily and seemed to think he would be an asset. You also pointed to McGeeney stating Johnston had trained as hard as anyone in the panel.

To be honest, I always had my doubts that McGeeney was blowing smoke into the whole issue with that comment.

There are always going to be problems with a player living such a significant distance from the county.

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,101 ✭✭✭klairondavis

I have no idea what Johnston's relationship with St Kevin's is like and it's their own business after all. Their manager was quoted in the local press that he was injured. I saw him play a few matches for them last year and he did not stand out as an inter-county player but I understand he had a good game in the relegation play-off.

As for his involvement with Kildare this summer, I think he will struggle to force his way into the team. Doyle is a certain starter in the full forward line and McGeeney will usually only pick one other inside forward in his teams - Johnston is not able to play a deeper role like many of the other Kildare players. If Smith shows a return to his 2012 form then I expect he will start. Johnston is probably a more accurate point kicker but Smith's workrate is better, he's a better ball winner and he's a greater goal threat.

Nah my opinion to myself is the same. I bleed white and support the county team either way hence why I was saying seanie is a lily etc.

I know it's straffans business what goes on there but believe me it's not a bed if roses there.

I still don't think seanie has earned a starting place in the side and if smith is sacrificed to play Johnston ill be sick...

So you portray one opinion on here yet have your own opinion which you keep to yourself? That doesn't really make sense tbh.

Why come onto an internet forum that's about posting your opinions and post an opinion which isn't your true opinion?

Lemlin I was on a wind up last year because of the whole debacle and this thread being completely derailed with arguments about Johnston.

I don't think this thread was derailed. There was a separate Johnston thread iirc.

I honestly don't see the issue with the player being discussed. I think you want to move away from the debate because you don't want to admit that you were wrong in your opinion last year.

The argument above you have given makes no sense whatsoever. You're trying to say that you come onto an internet forum, which is about people posting their opinion, and post an opinion which isn't your own?

I'm sure other users may be interested in reading this also. Celt brought up an alleged rumour about Johnston. Now two of you have alluded to Johnston having problems with his club side. If ye didn't want to discuss the issue, why did ye mention it in the first place?

Of course people are going to ask questions when the topic is alluded to. Even above you say "it's straffans business what goes on there but believe me it's not a bed if roses there". Of course that is going to have someone asking, what are Straffan's problems then?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 252 ✭✭Kinder Bueno

He plays with Kevin's not Straffan!

Lemlin, you seem to have some gripe with SJ that's bordering on the obsessive. Anytime there's a whiff of his name on here you jump in like a scolded cat.

Klairon is correct, I was at that relegation final and only for Johnston, St. Kevin's would now be an Intermediate team. I think there's a very good chance Johnston will play a big role in the championship for us this year, I think the full forward line will be JD, Brophy and SJ. The whole O'Connor experiment is over and rightly so, it works against the weaker teams but not against the big boys. Alan Smith has never convinced me, he blows too hot and cold for my liking and he seems to have an attitude problem at times too. Fogarty and Dowling are not quite ready yet especially after the U21 semi disaster.

I can't believe one year later we are still having a debate about Johnston..

I'd imagine its for the same reason:

a)straight away a few papers ran a story on Monday morning that Martin Dunne said he still regularly talks to Johnston and would love to play with him for Cavan again.
b)The first tweet the Sunday Game read out on Sunday night was one from Johnston.
c)Johnston tweeted about Cavan after the game and tweeted some players directly.
d)Cavan media like the Anglo Celt still regularly report on Johnston's progress in Kildare.

I don't see how its bordering on the obsessive to follow the progress of a player who relocated from the county to Kildare. How many years is it since Larry Tompkins relocated and is it not still talked about in Kildare?

The responses from all of ye above also show its still obviously a touchy subject in the county. Straight away ye close ranks.

To be honest, my interest today is more in the fact that Dark Knight won't admit his opinion has clearly changed? Last year SJ was a bastion of greatness, this year he clearly isn't, yet DK reckons that's because he didn't want to give his true opinion on here last year ;)

I don't agree. Smith's attitude is fantastic. He was Kildare's best forward last year and was the best forward in the club championship too. It was just unfortunate that he got injured against Ballymun in the Leinster Championship. He was one of the few Kildare players to come out of the Meath and Cork matches last year with their reputation intact.

Fogarty isn't on the senior panel as far as I'm aware. He has a ridiculous training schedule with the army and doesn't feel he can give the necessary commitment. I think Eoghan O'Flaherty won't be far away from the starting lineup. He has shown signs of a return to form recently and that is a positive for Kildare.

Of course it's a divisive subject. A large proportion of the GAA membership in the county were uncomfortable with what went on. There's no point in raking it up again. He's here now and we'll all just get on with it whatever our feelings are. There's nothing more to add to it at this stage.

I don't agree, Eoghan O'Flaherty was far and away the best forward in the club championship.

Smith was ok last year, he kicked a few scores against Cork and Meath, games that we both lost. I think it was more of a case of teams easing off rather than Smith been brilliant.

Going on recent challenge matches it seems Eamon Callaghan might very well be the latest experiment at CB. If that's the case I'd have a forward line of Eoghan O'Flaherty, Conway, Daniel Flynn, JD, Brophy and Seanie.

We really need to get midfield sorted this year, Daryl Flynn doesn't seem to be fully fit yet, going on reports from a recent club game he played, it seems he's a long way off it. Hurley has been suspended from the panel so it's anyone's guess as to who will partner Flynn if he is fit. Gary White will be a bigger loss than we first thought!

One player who I'm looking forward to seeing in this years championship is Paul Cribbin, he has a massive engine and he can take a score too. I was also looking forward to seeing Eoin Doyle at CB but it looks like he is injured hence Callaghan @CB. Doyle has all the attributes to be a good CB IMO.

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,101 ✭✭✭klairondavis

Conway won't get near the team. He was the fall guy for the Dublin defeat in the league.

Smith for me is the best inside forward in Kildare club football. He beat Michael Shields to every single ball last year. The trouble was that Kildare could not get enough ball into him. He was excellent against Cavan and Sligo too. I think he was Kildare's top scorer from play last year.

I said Johnston was a lily purely to rile you... Because you were obsessing at one point last year to be honest. My opinion is seanie should have stayed where he was. I said that last year also the whole thing is embarrassing for Cavan and Kildare

I openly said pm me lemlin stop baiting me here saying I'm full of waffle etc..

And where straffan are concerned if you want call the club and ask the board what u want yo know. I know a player that said that Johnston was devoted to kildare but was not as devout to saint kevins. take from that what you want it is a fellow club players opinion.

Lemlin can you please stop what you are doing here debating is one thing but stirring the pot is another.
