Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Just running Malwarebytes and its found 20 'potentially unwanted' programs. One of these is HKLM\software\microsoft\windows\current version\ uninstall. Its calling them all a threat (PUP.optional.winyahoo.tsklnk) and offering to quarantine. Does this seem reasonable?

    Asking for a friend :D

    https://blog.malwarebytes.com/detections/pup-optional-winyahoo/
This detection is for a potentially unwanted program (PUP) that performs changes on popular browsers installed on affected systems. Particularly, it modifies the user’s default home, start, and search pages for their Chrome, Firefox, Internet Explorer, and Safari browsers. This PUP also performs redirects to unwanted sites.

    Furthermore, it installs browser extensions / add-ons / plug-ins.

Safe enough to let MWB quarantine it. Careful what you your friend :-) install!

Not to me, going by this, unless some virus managed to write some unwanted stuff into that program, but how are you to know?

Anyway, hopefully you'll get a better, clearer, more educated answer from someone else. :p

You'd be a bit nervous of it apparently being microsoft\windows\current version, like might wipe the operating system - they might of course!

Edit: Seems to be ok, Malwarebytes quarantined it automatically and all the fingers and toes are still wiggling. Friend says thank you.

I would tend to trust MBAM when it wants to remove something.

Historically, it was one of the few anti malware apps that could remove some of the more 'dug in' malware.

If you google what it is flagging, it's a good way to find out that the malware does. As said, most of it hijacks your homepage or displays ads as you browse, some of the more malicious ones can harvest passwords.

Replace the BIOS battery on the motherboard would be first guess.

I believe the Keypad in a Vostro 3550 has to be removed in this model?

Try using Mouse Properties Pointers or Pointer Options to see how you could change it.

Weird question, but, are you looking at something in full screen? Sometimes that makes the cursor disappear. If you are, try pressing F11, it should resize the windows, and, theoretically, it should bring back the cursor.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,121 ✭✭✭TomOnBoard

    It's possible that
    a) a driver has become corrupt
    b) a driver has been overwritten
    c) the pointer/track pad has failed
    d) somethingb else entirely.

Get/plug in a usb mouse and work from there.

Were you using a second display recently and it's displaying the cursor on a second screen that isn't there anymore?

This is a bug, your Mouse driver is disabling itself, you need to find it in settings and enable it, happens a lot with Windows 10

I've had so many hiccups over the last few days, and general problems for months, that rather than cursing and sighing I've decided to learn this stuff.
Ok I know its Christmas but better to start now than put it off for the NY.

    My plan is
    1. Read this thread from start to finish or actually from finish back to start. Started that today.
    2. Do some online learning about the OS which is Windows 10; Ive read a third of TutorialsPoint Windows 10 Beginners this morning (OK I am an a early riser 'cos when you're 67 there isn't a lot of time left).
    Thats it.
    Any other suggestions? TIA

Maybe take a look on YouTube, they often have tutorials of people explaining things step by step (for instance, thanks to one of those I was able to disassemble, clean and reassemble my laptop, which is something I would have never done alone. It was still working after that, too!). The only thing is, some people are more knowledgeable than others, so it can be a bit of a hit and miss. :)

Good luck to you in your learning.
You will meet some obstacles on the way ..... completely not understanding things that you believe should be simple, but perseverance is the key.
When reading about some new concept read through first to get an 'overall' impression of what it is all about.
You can then go back and read again to get more understanding of it, and eventually you will find you understand quite a bit of it.
Reading different articles about the same subject can oftentimes provide an 'eureka moment' in your understanding.

One aspect I would encourage ..... do not ignore the hardware.
For better understanding of what is going on you should have an appreciation of the hardware used and how it all works together.

Last but not least ..... try to find someone more knowledgeable than you locally and 'pick their brains' at every opportunity. :)

Most of all ...... have fun while learning! ;)

Thanks John Boy and New Home and points taken. I have used YouTube for various bits and other learning sites like (?) gfc. In the distant past myself and son replaced memory in an old PC and he is my tech adviser now, thats when I can get hold of him.
My experience with IT has been learning by doing and iterative approach. Alos making up Dummy Cards until the topic/problem is well embedded - embedded in my head that is.
One of the most useful things I ever found was Ctrl + C etc for copying pasting. So here goes. This afternoon's visit to the local library just resourced me with Win 10 for Seniors so Im on the way!

I have a new to me (2nd hand) laptop on the way. It is running Windows 10. What's the best way to give it a clean* before using it. It has lots of utilities on it but nearly all are free so I don't mind loosing them. Just want to be safe security wise.

    TIA. Kat1170

I find Advanced Uninstaller Pro good. It has a lot of tools besides the uninstaller function (e.g. Registry Cleaner, Registry Optimizer). Just ignore the Daily Health Check prompts that pop up occasionally.

Switch Microsoft Security Essentials on (if it's still called that). With that running, you don't really need a third-party antivirus suite.

After your clean-up, defragment the hard drive.

Microsoft Office? For writing, maths calculations etc?

Personally I'd just get LibreOffice for free. You can save anything in the usual file types.

If it must be MS Office, I'm sure you can get a Office365 subscription direct from microsoft, student version is often cheap/free if I remember correctly

    Info here

Check with the school, they may have a site licence or student discount available for whatever your daughter needs for schoolwork.

What does she need? Is she learning his to use specific Microsoft applications as part if her schoolwork or us it just needed for doing up projects, reports and presentations?

If the latter there are free open source alternatives such as LibreOffice available or google docs which is useful if she nerds to share or collaborate with classmates.

Has the school listed exact requirements for what is needed? If students are expected to conform to the schools requirements the school needs to specify its requirements properly, down to application, version and, if formatting is important in any documents submitted what fonts to use.

It can only be guessed what the school means by saying the students need the Microsoft.

I.l email teacher and ask for specs........

If it's Office 365 Education, (office suite of applications - Word, Excel, PowerPoint, OneNote and Microsoft Teams) then you can download that for free from
    https://products.microsoft.com/en-ie/student/office-in-education
but that's the sort of information I would expect a school to provide upfront, together with the school email address needed to sign up to it if that's what they're using.

My own children's school used moodle and gave out a detailed step by step handout on how to install and setup whatever was needed.

Just to try help clear this up a bit, OUTDOORLASS. Microsoft Office is just an Office application/program that's used to create, open and edit certain types of files.

It's the types of files that is the important bit.

Myself and FishOnABike have both mentioned LibreOffice which is another Office application, there are a few others too. All of these Office applications will enable you to create, open and edit nearly all of the same file types. So with that in mind, you can create a new writing document file with LibreOffice at home and save it as a .doc or .docx (these are the file types) etc. This file can then be opened by somebody (teacher) using Microsoft Office and they won't know a different application was used to create it.

If I remember correctly, MS Office is now a monthly subscription of about €7. LibreOffice is €0.

Thanks theteal, one of the teachers for LCVP, has told me daughter that she will fail this project in her Leaving if she does.nt have
Microsoft, because that is what she uses for corrections for the LCVP project. So it.l have to be microsoft. The work is sent to the
teacher, she corrects it, and when you get it back, you can see the corrections.
My daughter did the homework the other day, sent it to the teacher, who sent it back, but because we did.nt have microsoft onthe
laptop, we could.nt see where the corrections had been made.
