The Bing imagery is pretty much at least five years, maybe seven, out of date. I just checked the railway in my backyard and it the previous version - rebuilt in 2007.
Of course, when you are looking for archeology, that really doesn't make that much never mind.

Im just wondering - normally with forest plantations. When an area is left out in the middle, could this be because of some kind of archaeological feature?
I just ask because to the north east of this clearing, Coumroe Stone Circle has a similar looking clearing "left out" for it. I don't know of any archaeological site in this particular clearing but I was wondering is it worth a bit of exploration?0 -

I think this is the listing for that clearing:
Description: Situated on a rise of ground in upland area in forest plantation with nearby stone circle (TN019-046001) to N and stone row (TN020-062) to E. A tall rectangular stone (H 1.42m; dims. 1m x 0.52m) with large recumbent stone immediately to SW, aligned on a NE-SW axis. The second stone was knocked during forest plantation.
A bit of an aside: While I'm all for Reforrestation (of the Native Irish kind), modern mechanised forrestry cannot be good for the preservation of underlying archaeology and I'm sure much is absolutely decimated by the earth moving involved in these plantations, in both planting ( extensive drainage ditches & hole digging) and the post harvest removal of root systems (i.e. stump harvesting).. Those standing stones are quite possibly connected to that stone circle, but any links between (i.e. more subtle features like ditches & other earthworks etc) are likely to have been decimated by this modern forestry cycle..0 -
God your actually totally right, its the clearing for the standing stone. I actually visited that standing stone and totally forgot about it.
Thanks for looking, it actually probably proves that a forest clearing may point to an archaeological feature.0 -
http://binged.it/PUm1JZ - Earthwork remains of the Medieval Town of Kilbixy in Westmeath
http://binged.it/PUmETM - Extensive earthworks around Abbeyshrule, Longford..
http://binged.it/PUnQXs - Extremely interesting this one.. Huge circular feature 250m in diameter.... You can make out two/three concentric Ditches in the Northern portion of it, and a concentric raised bank demarking the south edge of it... Lots of other associated earthworks.. Quite the massive feature... There's a listing of a couple of barrows a bit to the south on the monument record, but no listing of this earthwork.. I'm thinking no one knows about it... Any thoughts!? I'm thinking along the lines of a Fortified Iron Age Settlement....

It's certainly a busy and interesting place.
Here are a few observations I'd like to add.
Just east of the possible enclosure is 'Horse Island' (on the first edition 6" map) and there are signs of stream manipulation in the area on the second edition map.
Was this area a flood plain or a marsh, at some point?slowburner wrote: »Can we rule out the possibility that the ditches are not connected with later drainage works etc. on the nearby Dungolman river?
I think the circular nature of it is too obvious for it to be such drainage works... It's a definate enclosure in my mind.. Of what, I'm not too sure.. Hillfort or Monastry maybe?!...
There also seems to be a potential road exiting north from the enclosure which can be tracked for a few hundred metres northwards.. Alongside which is a (small) circular feature..0 -
http://binged.it/QPb9AY - Impressive earthwork fortifications in Kilkenny..
http://binged.it/QPbX97 - Possibly associated and contemporary with the fort.
http://binged.it/PzS41e - a small bit to the south, listed as a hillfort and a megalithic tomb0 -

I think it would be useful to other readers if we could add some kind of link to the location of these interesting images to aid accessibility.
It's always useful to cross reference the sites with the shiny new SMR and the OSI historical map series and maybe even the database from excavations.ie.
Perhaps background information from some of the many dedicated archaeological websites would be interesting too.
It's very enjoyable to look at these images, but it might be even more so if posters were to find potential sites which had not been previously noted.
The full extent of Brusselstown Ring on Spinan's hill in Wicklow for example, was only discovered relatively recently (1997 I think) by viewing stereoscopic aerial images. It's arguably the largest hillfort in Europe.

This PDF is well worth downloading and reading by all budding aerial archaeologists.

http://binged.it/T9ERzT - The coast's answer to the Hillfort. A local promontary fort near Tramore, Waterford. Paid it a visit earlier taking advantage of the nice weather..

Hi All,
A while back I noticed a feature and contacted the natural History Museum with details regarding my find, However the results were a little dissapointing, they suspected it was a duck pond but no-one gave it a proper examination.
These are the co-ordinates using Google Earth:-
52º59'30.01" N
6º03'32.78" W
Apparently it was in a field that may have been marshy.
Have a look.0 -

Brilliant idea for a thread by the way.
I hadnt played around with the new Bing maps data either. Thats quite an upgrade, it seems like its been years waiting for an update.0 -
Here's a hillfort outside Clifden in Connemara.

Here's another for further north. Its in a stunning position (zoom out) on the shoulder of a mountain and takes a bit of hike to get up to, still in pretty good shape too because of the inaccessibility. Small. It was probably just for observation?

Just a quick heads up that the archaeology.ie website has defeated its gremlins and has had a facelift to boot.
Always a good idea to check the records if you find something interesting0 -

http://binged.it/Q2AHe9 - This caught my eye close by, to the South of Cliften airport.. Very definite man-made enclosure, with the ruins of a rectilinear building inside, with a couple of similarly sizes rectilinear earth works alongside.. There seems to be a smaller square enclosure built into the north west corner of it.. It's not listed on Archaelogy.ie.. Any ideas of what it is?0 -

Late 18th/early 19th C. habitation.
The remains are most likely drainage ditches and the property is not defined on the second edition map, hence, very probably abandoned post famine.
Lazy beds are visible SW of the boundary.

The 6" map on Archaelogy.ie showed nothing in that area, so I assumed the osi.ie 1830 6" was the same.. . Do you know what date is that 6" Archaelogy.ie map is?0 -

The first survey was carried out between 1838 and 1846.
Edit: 1829 - 1846
See this thread for a little more info.0 -
http://binged.it/Qmkxuf - Any ideas of what this may be? It has no monument listing, and is included on the cassini 6" (Therefore>1846), but excluded from the osi 6"..

Maybe it is old sheep farm.

It can be old damaged farm silo.
Below is a circle mark close to others monument.
It looks like a tractor marks if yes,
why somebody is driving like that.
Anyway there is a lots of records around cists, booley huts, kerb circles
and others.

I'd say the driving is explained by the fact the lane is essentially a cul de sac further to the east (get's quite rough looking), and that field is the farmers best oppotunity to do a u-turn as feed is driven down for them sheep....0 -
Here's an interesting coastal earthwork. County Cork, just north of waterville.
There's no reason a farmer would construct anything right on the bluff of a cliff like that would they?

Thanks for your reply.
Here is some earthwork think so.

It'd be a good spot for a couple of canon, the guard both beaches from unauthorised landings... I'd think it could well be associated with nearby Ballinskellig castle ( http://binged.it/NfMJzh ) and the McCarthy Mór's...

looks to me like remains of a town. v.cool!
It looks very settlement like... I also think you can potentially see three phases of Anglo-Norman settlement on that image...
Earliest being the moated site to the north (the square section of trees..) May have looked something like this back in the day:

Then they may have moved onto the larger potentially fortified enclosure as the settlement prospered... The blacked area in the neighbouring field would imply to me that this enclosure continues a bit to the West, so could be 10 or 12 acres enclosed altogether...
And finally the stone castle was built... Castle is associated with the Templars, who apparently never finished the fortress potentially owing to the Order's demise in the early 1300s.. So how to link them in I'm not sure.. You'd assume the castle was contemporary and associated with the earthworks to some degree or other....
There seems to have been some level of settlement in the area in the 1500s, as mercator includes "B.Moone" on his map of Carlow from that time http://www.jpmaps.co.uk/mapimages/originals/37297.jpg .. But whether that is the present day Ballymoon (A good distance to the West) or these Earthworks, I've no idea...
I've no Access to to 1650 Civil Survey, nor Down survey maps of the area, so would love if someone could shed some light from that perspective for me..slowburner wrote: »Perhaps it should not be confined solely to satellite imagery: let's not forget the wealth of aerial photography, and historical mapping to correlate/cross reference sites of potential interest.
Simon I've been interested in this site for many years, and have trawled a great many sources including National Library, National Archives. British sources and of course the net. Unfortunately, there is very little info around, even from the 17th or 18th centuries. The Civil Survey for Carlow has not survived, The Down Survey does mention a castle at "Ballymonny" , but the Bagenal family lived there and it was presumably a more modern building that they occupied. There is mention of a "Ballymoan" in an old Carew family charter from 1304. The Carews were lords of the area up to the mid 14th century, but their chief settlement was at Dunleckney, about a mile away. The earliest definite description of the stone castle was in "A Tour through Ireland" by Chetwood in 1748, where he describes the Templar castle of Ballywilliamroe. Ballywilliamroe is the town land which borders the castle site to the east, but again there are few references to that name.
Tom McNeiil's "Castles in Ireland", one of the most authoritative works on the subject, describes Ballymoon castle as "the most enigmatic castle in Ireland". You've picked a difficult one!0 -

I believe it is also mentioned (and probably mapped) in the Down Survey for Ballywilliamroe... I havn't seen the survey documents themselves, only read a reference to it somewhere... Would be very interested to see the survey notes on that townland as it may give some indication as to what else was standing in and around the castle at that time...
Do you know anything about the "settlement like" earthworks I originally posted about? http://binged.it/OfscZ80 -

Only the cairn and a hut site is mentioned in the site in the first link, and the hillfort and another hut site in the second.
The site is very reminiscent of Spinan's hill in extent (see above).
Presumably, the small enclosures are booley sites?
I think a friend of mine might be studying this site at the moment. If so, I'll see what she's found and post up, if possible.0
