I think the thing to remember about BG3 is that there aren’t really many ‘minor’ encounters. What separates it from almost every other video game RPG is that every encounter feels significant and authored - the stakes may vary, but any fight can turn bad quickly. It doesn’t really have the random or filler encounters you have with other games. Obviously some are more narratively significant than others, but there are few if any fights that aren’t there for a unique, clearly motivated reason.

So yes - I think every encounter has the potential to be fairly difficult, and even more so if your current party is missing a vital skill (some act three fights are much more dependent on having particular abilities). It’s not a particularly hard game overall on medium (the opening ten hours or so are the most difficult as you’re just getting used to all the ins and outs), but it’s certainly overall a fairly consistent level of challenge.

Just picked it up. I know they were saying series S won't have couch Co op but can't find how to turn it on the series X.

While in a game playing you hit menu button where you see load/save and all that, and it's there under multiplayer.

You'll see 4 sets of boxes going left to right with each one being a possible player ( only 2 local + possible 2 online), connect the other controller and you can add them.

You'll then have the option of player 2 making a new character and player 1 can assign other characters for them to control too. The other characters will be below you name so normally if playing alone it'll be you on the left with all 4 characters under you profile.

It was that they had to create a custom character but not sure anymore.

Thats perfect thanks, myself and the wife created two characters and played to the encounter or so, its going to be the blind leading the blind and neither of us bothered to read a thing about the game so we will either love it or hate it

Id honestly recommend a keyboard and mouse with this game. It's the most PC ass game ever and I'm baffled people are coping with this on a controller.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 34,267 ✭✭✭✭Penn

Yeah it's manageable on controller on console, but only because the gameplay is so good that you just get used to it because you have to. But for PC, kb/m looks like it's far better.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,693 ✭✭✭Glebee

Tried to play on controller with geforce now, wanted to throw everything out the window it was that awkward. Don't know how people can use controller with these type of games.

Well, it's official. Karlach is the best videogame romance ever.

I want to do another playthrough and make a lot of different decisions, but I also know I'm going to really struggle to not romance Karlach.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 23,221 ✭✭✭✭J. Marston

I had a one night stand with Lae'zel. She took the break up well.

Then fell in love with Karlach.

Briefly had my head turned when Shadowheart had her makeover but stayed strong.

It's me and Karlach 4 eva now.

M&K is definitely the optimal way to play, but it’s entirely playable with a controller. Once you get the hang of it, it’s a pretty good rebuild of the UI given the complex, PC-specific nature of the game. I’d have gone PC if my friends hadn’t been playing on console, but outside of a few quirks and an initial adjustment period I found the controls perfectly fine - a little clunky for sure, but do what they need to do when you need them to.

Inventory management is the biggest annoyance with a controller, but from what I’ve heard they didn’t get 100% of the way there with that on PC either 😅

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 34,267 ✭✭✭✭Penn

Yeah you get used to the controller after a few hours. There were a few glitches with the UI which didn't help in terms of difficulty deleting or arranging the different radial menus for selecting actions. Also the fact I was very deep into the game before discovering how to select selecting multiple items quickly in the inventory. It does seem to make a lot of the movement outside battle a bit easier though, as you control your character rather than constantly pointing where you want them to go, panning the screen, pointing again, panning etc.

Once you get used to just knowing where all your actions are for your different characters on the radial menus, using a controller really isn't that bad.

But the kb/m seems a lot more well-designed and intuitive, especially during combat or when looting.

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 51,860 CMod ✭✭✭✭Retr0gamer

Still not really figures out how to give characters items

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 34,267 ✭✭✭✭Penn

On controller? Can't remember the buttons off hand, but if you open the context menu on an item, you can pick Send To and then each character in your party's name is below. You can even do it while looting and have it go directly to them rather than adding to your own inventory and then moving to them.

Another great reason to have Karlach in your party. Her strength lets her be a mule for all the armour and weapons and anything else with a bit of weight in it.

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 51,860 CMod ✭✭✭✭Retr0gamer

On keyboard and mouse. I figured it out but it's not intuitive at all.

Thought it was pretty obvious myself, maybe that's just me.

You've a drag and drop interface, just let me open two people's inventories and let me drag and drop.

You can drag and drop, onto their portrait.

What are people's party make ups? Do you chop and change it or stick with the same people?

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Arts Moderators, Computer Games Moderators, Entertainment Moderators Posts: 29,738 CMod ✭✭✭✭johnny_ultimate

I played my sorcerer / Shadowheart / Astarion / Lae’Zel as my main party, but swapped in Karlach for Astarion relatively frequently when I needed some more tank power. A good balance of magic, support and attack / defence. Astarion was at his best in the field during the middle game (for lock picking / disarming) but with a few perks and powerful items became a remarkably capable ranged fighter in some key late game fights. I liked Karlach a lot but the absurd amount of powerful attacks Lae’Zel was able to dish out per turn in later encounters was too hard to turn down.

Others were mostly only swapped in for character specific quests or if they had a particular skill that was exceptionally useful for a particular fight.

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 51,860 CMod ✭✭✭✭Retr0gamer

I'm swapping characters out but keeping asterion most of the time as he has great utility out of combat.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 34,267 ✭✭✭✭Penn

Act 1: Me (warlock), Shadowheart, Karlach & Astarion

Act 2: Me, Shadowheart, Karlach & Gale

Act 3: Me, Shadowheart, Karlach, Gale/La'zael

La'zael probably is more powerful than Karlach, but I preferred Karlach's character (and her, at times completely inappropriate, idle dancing). Act 2 I found a lot of need for AOE attacks so Gale started coming in a lot more clutch, plus his ability to learn spells directly. And Shadowheart is great for support in general.

You do have to mix it up though. Others I used at times, particularly in Act 3, when I knew I was going to be furthering their stories. A lot of it also comes down to your own build. If I went fighter or Rogue instead of magics, Shadowheart and Gale probably would have been mainstays.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,553 ✭✭✭✭Varik

Me: storm Cleric with I moved in and out of thing and reset depending on level. It's more a Larian thing than a D&D thing but lighting is more powerful in this than normal D&D as water plays a part.

Astarion, doors, chest, sneak killing to make stuff easier.

fighter, unless story needed I go Karlach.

Last person is story or spellcaster.

I've got Shadowheart as a light cleric as I found her Trickery less than useful. Having 2 clerics in Act 2 made it very simple as you can nuke whole areas of undead.

Second playthrough I started was to get a missed trophy, did that as a Bard and it's pretty fun.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,295 ✭✭✭Mike Litoris

Chop and change only to finish out character storylines. Used Gale, Karlach and La'zael pretty straight up along with my Ranger with theif skills. Most bases were covered except healing which I use potions and rest. We were quite strong by the 3rd act and was never really challenged.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,577 ✭✭✭DeSelby83

Thanks for all the comments everyone. I have Astarion, La'zael and Karlac but kinda want to have shadowheart in there for healing. Might just experiment a bit more and run a few fights with different characters and see how it goes

Struggling to make progression with main quest lines in Act 3, can’t seem to find where I’m mentally to go, I know there are markers but they seem to be sending me around in circles. What am I missing??

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,295 ✭✭✭Mike Litoris

I avoided the main quest as much as possible until I had all the side quests done. I think that helped somewhat with the direction if the main quest by uncovering locations and interactions. That said I found it all a bit messy until about 2/3 of the way through the act. Some missions just didn't seem logical and I checked a walkthrough, which I hate having to do, more than once.

Just started playing this after christmas on PS5 think I am near the act of end 1, 30 hours down phenomenal game reminds me of KOTOR and how much I loved that game.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,186 ✭✭✭brady12

With all my talk I finally bought this on steam . 110gb download 🥲. Must download it on deck too. I've last two weeks month off so will really dig into it then . Any tips for a fella who has never player a crpg, larian game or d & d😅😁

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 896 ✭✭✭DarkJager21

Never played D&D myself but got this over Xmas and it's absolutely brilliant. Will take you a couple of hours for things to click and at level 1, you might get your ass kicked in a few fights. Can't really give you any tips of worth as I'm still learning myself but start off on Exploration difficulty to make it slightly easier on yourself. In combat Oils/grease puddles can be ignited, water can be electrified etc And if you see a hand reaching out of a portal somewhere don't chop it off 🤣

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 23,221 ✭✭✭✭J. Marston

I'm coming towards the end now.

If there isn't a way to save Karlach I will be utterly crushed. I'm actually panicking now.

3 or 4 hours in loving it so far . Dropped it down to easy until i figure out battle system . I thought I would hate dice rolls but actually enjoy it. Using controller when I am just running around settlement chatting to people but wouldn't be fan using it for battles .

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,216 ✭✭✭Sudden Valley

Is act 3 a but of mess? Seems quests are confusingly laid out and not well signposted what you are supposed to do. I did enjoy the first two acts but a few hours into act 3 and finding it a slog

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,693 ✭✭✭Glebee

Im feeling the same, Act 3 is all over the shop for me anyway, ive stopped playing as I cant figure out what mission I have to do next.

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Arts Moderators, Computer Games Moderators, Entertainment Moderators Posts: 29,738 CMod ✭✭✭✭johnny_ultimate

Act 3 is a lot messier than the others - it’s more sprawling, chaotic and where things are more likely to go wrong (for your character and, alas, with the game). BUT it’s also home to lots and lots of amazing stuff - wild quests, epic battles and wonderful payoffs to stuff that was established much earlier.

Best way to approach it is to not hurry anything, and just take things as they come. It was maybe 50% or more of my entire playthrough in the end, being as thorough as I could. Pursue quests that sound interesting - the city rewards digging up as much as you can. And honestly don’t be reluctant to check a guide for some of more poorly signposted quests - while some are very straightforward, others are more obtuse and on rare occasions somewhat glitchy. The character specific quests are IMO particularly worth chasing - that’s where you’ll find some of the super interesting encounters. The main quests will wait… unless someone explicitly tells you to do something quickly, in which case you probably should 😂

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 23,221 ✭✭✭✭J. Marston

I would also encourage not hurrying. The game can tend to put a false sense of urgency on you for some quests.

There isn't urgency and when there is, it'll be clearly signposted for you. You can go about your business for the most part.

Anyway, I finished it with what is probably the standard good ending. Definitely one of the best games ever for me.

I think i have to hurry now as I believe I have been prompted to by the game but not sure how I got to this stage so quickly in Act 3. I think the only way I can get a good ending is to review a walkthru guide which is a pity.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 34,267 ✭✭✭✭Penn

The game will say something is really urgent, but as the devs said, unless you see a building on fire and someone asking you to help immediately, everything is able to wait for as long as you want. It's only when there's an immediate danger that you can clearly see and has been activated that you have to hurry. Other quests typically won't activate the next stage until you actually go there and begin interacting.

I wouldn't bother looking up guides for a good ending though. Honestly it's far better when it's your ending. The ending which is the result of your actions, choices and failures/successes.

Without going into too many specifics, the most critical time sensitive quest is involving Orin and a kidnapping victim. There’s a timer on that that kicks in if you solve the Murder Tribunal quest I believe, but it’s not timed before that AFAIK.

The newspaper and Florrick quests also have a timer attached once you find out about them, but they’re much more minor quests in the general scheme of things and should be more easily resolved.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,216 ✭✭✭Sudden Valley

Ah thanks that was the point I reached but I hadn't completed the subsequent quest. It seemed urgent but I had no timer yet.

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Arts Moderators, Computer Games Moderators, Entertainment Moderators Posts: 29,738 CMod ✭✭✭✭johnny_ultimate

Don’t hold me to this as there might be an exception or two, but I think whenever there is a specific time limit - e.g. three days (ie three long rests) - the game tells you so. That’s definitely the case in the quest mentioned above. Unless they tell you that… you’re good to do the quest at your own pace, even if it seems urgent. Aspects of the world state will occasionally change if you progress a particular quest but nothing that should be a concern.

Obviously there are a couple of encounters that must be resolved immediately when you encounter them due to urgency, but you’ll usually see why that’s the case due to some imminent catastrophe, explosion or other threat to life 😅

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,186 ✭✭✭brady12

I never play games on easiest difficulty usually the middling ' Normal ' one but being my first larian / crpg game and having never played D & D there isn't a hope i'd be still playing it if I wasn't playing on easy it's just too complex . The long and short of it is I love this game 15 hours in . Just took out the 3 goblin leaders and even taking out couple them took a bit trial and error on easy . Starting grasp all the game mechanics now I just can't believe the breadth of the options you do have . The dialogue options & the facial expressions are unreal . Using controller for just strolling around chatting but be painful use it for combat mouse and keyboard all the way . Played a small bit on deck too was fine .

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,857 ✭✭✭Atlas_IRL

Think i may have to go back a good few hrs. I am at the second thorm fight without nightsong and even changing it to lowest difficulty i keep getting thrashed. i am level 8, is there any way to cheese this fight or any tips to make it easier as i cant get out of the area i am in, (i know i can heal thats not the problem.)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,553 ✭✭✭✭Varik

There's separate parts of that fight, which part are you on.

In general stealth into rooms to see what's what and start the fight on your terms. Splitting party up and moving them separately to take 4 sperate actions, when 1 attacks that character get's pulled into the fight but the other 3 will still be out of combat and able to move freely but can join by attacking.

Astarion's voice actor (Neil Newbon) knocked it out of the park all game, but the conclusion to his Cazador arc he really nails it. Didn't complete the ritual, but watching him go ham with the dagger, you can feel the catharsis.

    Astarion spoilers.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 23,221 ✭✭✭✭J. Marston

His voice is like honey poured into your ear.

All the voice acting is fantastic. Gale is one of the most charming fellas in any game/show/movie I've played/watched.

I've finished and I'm currently playing Dead Space but even when I'm playing that I'm still thinking; "I could do another playthrough. How would being a sorcerer/wizard/warlock be? What race would I be? What decisions would I change?"

I can't go back to it though. I'll be engrossed in it for another half a year.
