    OK

As someone who only briefly played battlefront and thought it was OK but doesn't have nostalgia goggles for the franchise

    I didn't like this

It's messy annoying unclear and simply not fun.

From a developer who should know better since they've had over a decade of experience in the genre.

edit: Also this is the battlefield forum, dont want it compared to battlefield move the thread to the general gaming forum. Otherwise its fair game to say as a Dice game this is their worse offering in years

I think comparing the game to a game ten years prior is flawed. Do people compare Fifa 16 to Fifa 06? I think not.

Blitzkrieg makes valid points.... to be honest I didn't have a clue what was going on in Walker Assault... I just ran, shot, ran, shot, died, spawned, shot.

    Made no sense to me!!

I think comparing the game to a game ten years prior is flawed. Do people compare Fifa 16 to Fifa 06? I think not.

Its using the same name of course its going to be and should be compared to its predecessors and rightly so, they are very purposely intending people to go "oh hey battlefront, I loved the other games so ill play this one as it should be similar"

People compare fifa 16 to fifa 15 cus it was the previous game in the series like people are comparing Batllefront(2015) to Battlefront 2 which was the previous game in the series

So does it in your opinion improve on battlefront 2?

Also people compare fifa 16 to fifa 15 but there's only been a year's difference.

We have a different studio a 10 year shift in the genre as a whole.

So you'd compare not just to battlefront 2 but also that studios previous work. For example Amnesia 2 was compared both to amnesia but also to Dear Esther cause different studio produced it.

You'd expect either a very conscious push to go with an older style of play ala serious sam or an attempt to modernise the franchise with improvements the genre has received with the new studios past work as a framework.

Walker assault feels like an attempt at the latter, its a rush style game mode being introduced which is a staple of Dice design

and its in my opinion not working. It's badly thought out and messy with a lot of lessons they learnt from battlefield being forgotten purely on the issue of pacing and balance.

I found it fun enough in the sense of wow shiney new fps game but after a few hours im wondering where the depth will come from.
Some very good and valid points from BlitzKrieg.

I know its a map thats hate or love but the Rush version of Operation Metro is a good example of how a Rush Map works in a simple form

There's a bit of a gap between the attackers and defenders before they hit the main park area that gives the defenders time not necessarily to reach the mcoms but to get in a defensive position to oversee them.

When that area is lost and the game falls back all defenders are given time to retreat or are respawned along the new defensive line. The attackers get a bit of eye candy as they move to the new line and the game continues

its actually the third point where metro in rush has problems because the gap is much smaller and the chokepoints too small, but the sense of progression is very clear because of those gaps where people reset.

because walker assault enforces the push back...EVEN WHEN THE DEFENDERS SUCCESSFULLY DEFEND, the need for this gap is paramount and the need to force the spawns back and reset the line.

Thats why I think it would be better if the attack the walker segments where more like a mini game then just letting everyone let rip with their blasters (which lets admit it looks silly anyway) as that lets Dice reset all the spawns between waves.

Personally I'm really enjoying the game. Yea there is feck all to do in the beta.
I've already unlocked all weapons and just need another thousand credits or so for the sharpshooter card. But there is obviously gonna be a tonne more weapons and pickups on general release. Also plenty more maps.
The beta was here as a tech test. Server stress test etc.. Personally I think it went very well and I'm quite happy with everything in it.

Map tweaks will come with time. Yea Walker Assault is a but unbalanced atm but I have seen defenders win. It's about knowing what to do.
IMO - the rebel fighters are way more powerful than the Empire. That's one thing that really has to be used or defenders will never win. When the walkers are exposed, the fighters should be tearing them a new one. If they don't - forget it. Little pew pew blasters are not enough to take them down. Also people should be looking for pickups. Smart rockets etc. are your friend.
Even besides that, most times I play Assault, people are standing back and sniping at enemies instead of going for the relay points or whatever they're called. I don't get that at all. Literally today I ran around the point on the left at start and there was at least 7-10 people standing back sniping. I walked up and there was no enemies at the point. Capped it and walked off. How long had they left it there uncapped??

Still - pretty sure I'll pre-order this after the beta. I'm very happy with what I've played so far. :)

I think its a mess, personally. Game modes are very poor. The weapons are rubbish. The spawn points in walker mode are horrific to say the least. I think I'll be staying with Destiny for a while longer.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 448 ✭✭Mad_Dave

    Thoughts so far:

Drop Zone is ok, gets boring very quickly. Most matches finish 5-0 which says a lot.

Walk Assault is just a bloody mess. BlitzKrieg already covered the bad points, and yes the spawn points are horrendous.

Weapons are pretty poor, no recoil, no real need to ADS most of the time, if at all.

Hit reg is questionable at best, although that's just my opinion and I may be wrong. battlenonsense is doing a video tonight about it, should make for interesting viewing.

Also judging by the amount of fairfight bans popping up now the hackers are hard at work.

Only played a few minutes of it.

    First impressions--meh!!
I was thinking of a Gpu upgrade solely for this game from my old 6870 but its running it fine at medium albeit in windowed mode.

Its not the game I thought I would upgrade for.

Graphics are amazing though. But its more like a consoley type FPS than a fully fledged one that you`d play as a clan.

Thought this might have brought me back to more online PC gaming. As it stands I think Ill just play it on the XB1

It is a fun game, solid shooting, and possibly the best optimised/best performing DICE game, EA will be launching.

However, there is a strong novelty sentiment coming from the game and I am afraid I have already sampled everything this game has to offer. Vehicles and weapons can not be modded, 12 maps, and less vehicles than a conventional Battlefield game. Apart from a change in scenario, what else does Battlefront have that we haven't already tried in this beta?

Don't get me wrong, it is a solid game (technically), but it feels very stripped down when compared to a Battlefield and I honestly do think I have experienced all that is on offer - except for a change in locale.

Its an arcadey game that will find its niche, Battlefield gamers are not it tho.

Noticed some of our old pal "rubberbanding" creeping in earlier on PS4 one - I would hope it was because that console isn't hardwired ATM, but hey it's DICE, did they not just port over BF4s now working engine for it?

Other than that, nope - I'm glad they released the beta as other than the "fcuk me, shiney" graphics I don't think it would keep my interest very long - pretty disappointing I must say...

Enjoying the beta. The melee is so clunky. I hope they make it a bit more fluid.

After playing the game for a few hours with my flatmate I really enjoyed it. It's very cinematic and not serious. Quite arcadey but that was to be expected.
I think as more people relaise the objective for the rebels in assualt walker they will win more.
All in all im looking forward to buying the compete game in November

I'm getting horrible freezes and stutters, game is totally unplayable, even on the main menu. I see a lot of people with the same issue, and all have AMD cards as well. Pain in the ass because I can't play the game at all. Drivers don't make a difference.

Try uninstalling Origin and then re-install it.

I had the same issues and this fixed it.

I actually found that by just leaving the game for a few minutes it actually works fine eventually. the other modes worked grand it's just Walker Assault takes a while to sort itself out for whatever reason.

So after playing over an hour of Walker Assault, the game itself...it's grand but it's really disappointing coming from Battlefront 2 and considering it's a DICE game.

There's a bit of craic to be had but overall it's just such a poor relation to Battlefront 2. Never thought I'd be saying that Hoth on the 10 year old Battlefront 2 is a million times better than Hoth in Battlefront 2015 - but it is.

Also....Battlefront 2 heroes on Hoth were also Vader and Luke. Luke was clad in his rebel flight gear as per Empire - but in this it's Return of the Jedi Luke? Would it have killed them to make it the Luke it should be?

This was a day one purchase for me from the moment it was announced but after playing the Beta for two hours, it's one I will skip. I'm sure I will pick it up when it's €15 or whatever.

The most positive thing is that the graphics and sound effects are brilliant - really, really immersive. Just a shame that the gameplay is just so half-baked and dumbed down.

As someone who put 100's of hours in Battlefront and Battlefront 2 this is the biggest gaming disappointment I've had in ages. :(

I wonder is this has good as its going to be. I think they might have chosen the best parts of the game to entice people to pre-order.

I am hoping the retail release will be much better.

    .

I really hope not. If that's the best of the game I'll go nowhere near it even for significantly dropped price. Tbh I was hoping they'd have a few surprises up their sleaves when the game launches and this is just a stress test on the servers. Thinking about it though they did beta operation metro on bf3 which was one of the better maps.

I'm finding it a bit of fun. Though anything Star Wars gets me excited.

The Hoth battle mode is not right, of course. Maybe with more weapons and vehicles and some balancing it'll play better.

Yeah, there's not much to the Beta, but sure that's to be expected. Throw in a rake more maps, modes and weapons and happy days.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,906 ✭✭✭EGriff

I don't find the walker mode that bad, the rebels have won a lot of the matches I've played.

  • Registered Users Posts: 278 ✭✭Dard23

The Empire seems to wipe the floor wipe the rebels everytime I play anyway. The machines are very unbalanced, the at-st and ties are far to strong. I also think they need to reevaluate spawning points as you're either a mile away from the action or else dropped right in the middle of the chaos just to be cannon fodder!

"Battlefront has stopped working", yea I won't be buying this shít heap. Exact same issue with BF4. Every so often it would work for a prolonged lenght of time (anything over 1 day).

"but it's only in Beta", yea good one. I can guarantee you, a small minority of people will be plagued with constant issues with this game and it will not be an enjoyable experience.

Final conclusion for me on the beta after 15+ hours of play which lets be honest is not a beta its almost what we will play in the final build, its merely a preview.
Far too shallow gameplay, walker assault mode is allover the place , a total mess, simplistic gameplay to applease the console masses, pickups are a total joke, flying and vehicle controls are beyond broken[coming from dice thats just shocking].
Ofcourse we will see the blinkered folk who see the shiney graphics and the star wars theme and then hear the soundtrack and sound effects and duely wet themselves, totally blind to how shallow this game is and is likely to be.

I said for months that I was sceptical of this game, especially after I saw footage at E3. I did want a new Battlefront game but I didn't want it to feel like Battlefield. Since I found out DICE were developing it, that's when I started to lose interest. And it was almost exactly as I expected when I played the beta on Saturday. To me, it does feel like a Battlefield game. I do like Battlefield but I also loved the original two Battlefront games by Pandemic. It almost feels like what they did with Medal of Honor. I honestly could barely see any difference between that game and Battlefield 3 at the time.

I was very underwhelmed by Battlefront and I do not think this will be an early purchase for me - especially at full price. Personally, I don't like the idea of paying 60-70 quid on an online-only multiplayer game, especially a shooter. After I found out Need for Speed was going to require an always-online connection to play I instantly got turned off. This game is joining it, unfortunately.

I was excited, but seeing gameplay footage, being fearful of broken servers during launch period, à la Battlefield 4 (and SIMCITY), and experiencing the game first hand has just put me off the game. There's something about EA's developers I have just lost trust in recently. FIFA's no angel. I have FIFA 16 and I love it but how many times do those servers need to crash? I also experienced a horrible glitch that lasted throughout FIFA 14 and FIFA 15 and only got patched out in this instalment. But that's a rant for another day. And I suppose EA isn't the only company that has had broken games on launch (looking at Rocksteady, Evolution Studios and 343 Industries)

Battlefield 4 is heavy stable now, but how long did it take?
Halo MCC is only barely stable online, but it still takes a while to join a game. And I still cannot continue my single-player playlist after it glitch-launched be back to the first mission and it still hasn't been fixed....

The best multiplayer experience I have had throughout this entire year has been Gears of War: Ultimate Edition on the Xbox One but I digress again.

I don't want to fork out full price for Battlefront. The customer is always right so I will, at the very least, look at everyone's final opinion of their experience and updates on how the game plays, before I even consider buying this game, and even then, I won't be paying full whack.

I hate season passes. Well avoid it if I get the game until the pass is on sale.

Oddly enough I played about 3 hrs of Drop Zone tonight and absolutely loved it. Hopefully Drop Zone has plenty of maps in the full game. Walker assault puts me to sleep.

The battles over capturing pods were fierce. I'd like to see what the full game will over. EA Access will help with that since it gives subscribers a 10 hr trial of the retail game.

Edit: 11hrs played during the beta.

I've played a small bit of this. It can be fun but there are a lot of annoyances mostly due how they've made it battlefield lite. The Mario Kart powerups are awful. It feels almost like Battlefield Heros.

It looks great and really captures the Star Wars feel but not going to pick it up at launch tho.

  • Registered Users Posts: 219 ✭✭psnKOB79LFC

    Well what did everyone think?

I liked the game, it is definitely fun and given that my kids will like it and we can play split screen co-op together I certainly will buy it.

Walker Assault is totally incredible in terms of visuals, idea and epic-ness BUT of course there are glaring issues with people not having a clue what is going on and how to win as rebels. When I played the rebels won a lot more than YouTube commentators are saying but it was still probably only 1 in 5/6 games.

In Walker Assault I liked that the turrets had some purpose and I did have fun fighting in the air, it may be arcadey but it was great fun; not being able to get out of the aircraft is brilliant and either should be adopted for BF games or have it that you can get out but can then only equip a pistol. This would stop recons using the jets as taxis.

I also like the manner in which you get into vehicles or avail of power-ups… I didn’t think Id like it but in the end it is good as it adds some variation. I wouldn’t like it adopted for BF5 though.

Downsides are certainly the balance for Walker Assault, the fact that guns just seem the same and kind of boring… they sound the game, feel the same (more or less) and have no real variation. Also dislike the card system because in time everyone will have the same loadout. I rarely changed mine so I found I was using the same gun and same loadout most of the time – that got tiring very fast. The jetpack is a pain in the neck too, there should be some delay because it is such an easy out to deploy it when losing a firefight – that gets frustrating.

Overall it is a good effort… am I dying to play other maps? Not really because I just cant see the variation in this game in terms of gameplay. If the AT-ST is dominating; tough luck really as you can do feck all about it unless you get a suitable power-up. In BF I could move to engineer/support or even recon and make it my job to take the vehicle out. In SWBF I feel because I can’t do so I am a spectator sometimes and can’t really make that much of a difference to the win and loss. This means when I win or loss I actually don’t really care because the game passed me by.

The same can be said of the scoreboard; if you don’t get into the AT-AT or AT-ST you are not going to top the scoreboard so why really care… again I just mucked about and enjoyed the visuals!

Dropzone doesn’t interest me; it is as good as that type of gameplay gets but infantry 24/7 running around just bores me after 10 minutes. I will give that a miss.

By the way I didn't have one connection issue in around 6 hours on PS4 - worded flawlessly.

I was hoping it would be a star wars version of battlefield like everyone seems to think it is, I wish! I don't see the resemblance but I never played battlefront so I don't know how much it's changed. I wouldn't even consider it a fps, everyone in 3rd person

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 29,930 ✭✭✭✭TerrorFirmer

I put 100's of hours into the older Battlefront games and I find people keep saying stop comparing this to Battlefield, compare it to Battlefront!

Well....it's not like Battlefront and Battlefront 2 at all. Those games were more arcade than Battlefield admittedly, but they were broadly similar.

They had open maps which allowed for numerous sections in which localized battles raged, you had to spawn into/climb into vehicles, AT-AT's were totally player controlled, and it had a class system - so on the likes of Endor, taking down AT-ST's was possible with a decent team who adapted to suit the need.

In this....you can't do any of that. You're shoehorned into a very specific part of the map and the lack of any sort of class system is madness when you give one team an overwhelming number of powerful vehicles.

Playing as the rebels was mostly totally painful. I played as empire twice and both times it was laughable, I had about 25 kills and one or two deaths.

I get that it's a beta and the full game should offer more but I'm concerned that if they thought this was absolutely the best part of the game they had to offer as the hook....then it's just not worth buying.

This is closer to Call of Duty than Battlefront 2 to be perfectly honest. If you play 64-player Hoth on Battlefront 2, it's still so much better.

AT-AT's are player controlled, the rebels have taun-tauns, the map is way bigger and allows for battles to rage in different areas, snow-speeders can trip up AT-AT's like the movie, the imperial side has no tie-fighters to balance out the AT-ATs and AT-STs, there's a class system, and there is more players as well.

Oh...and they have the correct version of Luke, in his rebel pilot gear.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,618 ✭✭✭Mr Freeze

Had to refresh my memory of the old Battlefront Hoth missions and I agree with what people are saying, that was a better map, it was more faithful to the film anyways.

The Hoth map in the new Battlefront, seems to be a non canonical revision of the Hoth battle, with Y Wings and Tie Fighters and a new lay out (minus tauntauns.)

I'd forgive the new Battlefront for putting its own twist on the battle, but I think the battle is over far too quick with the Empire winning in most cases.

Also, I think it does need a class system or at least some cards that could set you up as some sort of anti vehicle troop so you can react when there is an AT-ST or Tie wrecking havoc.

If they put in a class system people would cry "battlefield reskined".

If they don't, people cry "no class system".

Sometimes they can't win; personally really dislike not having classes... when I die I am hoping to be revived to no avail!

To me there are so many better shooters out there now why bother with this?

Judged soley on its mechanics, depth and balance it looks like coming up very short when compared to shooters out there already.

As a fan service for Star Wars though i think it looks to have done a decent job. The audio and visuals are spot on for star wars fans and they will enjoy that.

So i dont think this game is aimed at people who like there fps games,i think its aimed at people who love star wars and want a game set in that universe. Where they can immerse themselves in the good visuals and accurate audio. Which this game supplies.

And by shooter fans i meam those who play the likes of CoD,BF,Counter Strike etc. All much better shooters than this imo

TL;DR Games is made for Star Wars fans not fans of fps games imo

And by shooter fans i meam those who play the likes of CoD,BF,Counter Strike etc. All much better shooters than this imo

TL;DR Games is made for Star Wars fans not fans of fps games imo

Yes for PC players but console players have nothing; Destiny is crap, COD is always crap, dont have Verdun, Counter Strike, that world war 2 game etc etc. All we have is BF4 and Hardline (which I still do play now and again)
