Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Yes you get more money but to be honest thats irrelevant I think.

I dont fully understand the increments myself nor do I care because if you like the job enough the money is only an added bonus

The advantage of the degree is that you have something to fall back on if you realise the Gardaí isnt for you.

You are older when you join which should mean more mature

    You are more educated

A degree may help you branch out into different areas of AGS depending on you area.

Its a hard one to call.

What I think you should do is apply for the AGS in the next drive.

Start college in September. If your lucky enough to be accepted by AGS then make the choice

I agree here with li@mo on starting college. I think you should register for your course and start one at the very least. They will raise the issue of your education in the interview and showing that you have other options and are not just relying on A.G.S. would stand to you.

Besides you could be waiting anything up to 2years+ to enter Templemore and that's even with everything going well and you're getting though the stages of the recruitment process. So it would make sense to be further enhancing your skills (educational and otherwise) in the mean-time.

how could that be possible, one is run by the british government the other by the government here, its like asking can you transfer from the london metropolitan police to the gards.

That's good advice. In the current uncertainty you don't know when AGS will recruit again. Keep your options open. If, God forbid, something came up that stopped you from going to Templemore at least you would have a couple of years of a degree done. It would be a great thing to have to fall back on. Also college would provide a lot of opportunities to develop skills relevant to the gardai through clubs, societies, etc. You could get involved in debating, sports or community projects. And, let's be honest, college is fun.

Def agree, I rejected a college course and went for the guards and failed and was left with nothing. Ya ALWAYS need to have a back up!!!!!!!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 204 ✭✭Ruairi88

Yes College is Definently an option!.And I would suggest a course in any form of Social Studies area!.
Kerry4Sam is right the back log is Pretty high and unless Ireland's enconomy starts to boom this second
you will be waiting well over a year to 2 years to get in.Plus college shows discipline and determination
these are strength and Qualities AGS are looking for!.And you are only 18 You have time on your side!.
Getting to the point of increments....with a third degree qaulification after you have finished your 2
year probationary you only have to wait 2 years before you can apply for a sergeants' course without it
you will have to wait.Increments I think its worth an extra 2000-3000k a year!.Not much over 1 or two years
but base this over a career of 30 years its 90000k probably a third of a mortgage so I think College is
definently a Positive option!...Goodluck to You mufc4life. The only Problem I got with you is Your a Man Utd fan!(:-)

Sorry without a third degree Qualification after your probationary period you will have to wait 3 years!.

I was just thinking about something and i wonder if anyone can help. When the next recruitment drive happens, is there a cap on the number of people they accept or if say 1000 people reach the standard required are 1000 people then put into the system for a call up even if there is 400 places to be got this year for example and then they roll over to next intake etc.

That might sound confusing, but the jist is do they only accept the top of the bunch to fill a quota or is it the standard set that decides how many get accepted. So are we competing against each other or against a set standard.

Might be a stupid question but anybody have any insight into that?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 204 ✭✭Ruairi88

Well I dont want to sound like a smart ass but if they capped it at the certain 400 and only told 400 applicants out of 10000 that they were getting in We wouldn't have a backlog would We.If they think 900,1000 or even 9,999 people are Good enough for the job with only 400 places well then you get the much talked about backlog!.Hope that sheds light on your Question JYPO!.

    Hey everyone
with all this waiting and uncertainy, Has anybody applied to other police organisations.

I just applied for the Psni there there recuit windo is open for the next few months

also still have to fill out the scottish police application too

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 160 ✭✭manaka

I do believe there is a transfer, but only as an observer for a specified amount of time. There is no transfer of power. One of the lads/ladies on the psni forum quoted this. Not sure if it works both ways...

PSNI and gardai can and do work experience on both sides of the border. In the South it is done via competition within the AGS. Cant remember how long you can do it for but its basically see hows its done the other side of the border and forge relations between the two forces. Thankfully the relations between the PSNI and Gardai is stronger than ever and long may it continue.

From what I've been told, once you are within the age limit on the date of applying you are fine.

Yes, An Garda Siochana recruit as and when the need arises and do not recruit on an ongoing basis. As far as I know the last campaign was for 2008 as the recruitment campaigns have been very frequent over the last few years. However, given that the country is in a major recession I would have thought it highly unlikely that there will be any further recruitment campaigns over the next 12 months or possibly longer. Indeed at this rate I would imagine that the candidates who were succesful at the last recruitment will be lucky just to be permitted to commence their training.

Also expect if and when An Garda Siochana do start recruiting again expect the numbers applying to dramatically increase and thereby making it substantially more difficult to get selected.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 21 IslandFella

Thanks Ero. This is good for me even if it on a per application basis, ie if I fail this recruitment process, my taken age will begin from receiving my app for the next recruitment drive.

Eli, from what I understand there are two recruit drives a tear and it can take anything up to two years from when you first apply to when you set foot in Templemore. I'm a noob too, so I'm just giving my two cents.

On anothe mote, I see Garda Preparation Courses advertised in newspapers every now and again. These are unrelated to the official recruitment process. Are they any good or are participating in them even necessary in order to succeed? I believe ex-gardai run some of them.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 21 IslandFella

dats right, scary and harsh words for us hopefuls. Its reality though and I'm not hoprful for myself to even get a chance to apply.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 67 ✭✭jypo

I would not worry too much, there will be a recruit by the end of the year or an announcement of one. Im positive there will be one.

Jypo I swore 2 myself that I would remain positive and convince myself there will be another campaign this year and Im

Eilissinead, You firstly need 2 have an account with Publicjobs.ie once you have that You can then set up for job alerts.this should be
near the top left hand corner of Your screen. When you click on this You will be asked to click a new "Job Alert" When you do this a list
of selected Government vacancies will come up.You then click Security/Emergency Services and under this a role will have to be selected
you then select "GARDA" when this is done click the "SUBMIT" bar.You will then be notified of the next up and coming Garda Recruitment Campaign!.Goodluck!.
    Security

Hi, Long time viewer, 1st time poster. There was an article in the Irish Independant last week on Garda numbers and how a number of well known high ranking officers will be retiring this year. There was also an article on the 1st African member of the Garda reserve, a Nigerian guy who is hoping to get in full time. Hopefully the press know more than we do about what numbers are needed as they were definitely pushing for a campaign as there hasn't been one for almost a year now.
A bit about me, Ive been waiting since last July, when I decided to join up.. missed the last campaign by a month or 2. Wentto the open day last October and have been studying for the aptitude test since. I also joined the Civil Defence in Janaury... I'm 27 and have a degree. Is there anything thing else I should be doing to improve my chances?

This is just personal opinion and I've nothing to back it up but I see recruitment jumping again slightly over the next year or two. 2 reasons for this.

    1. With the new pension levy, a lot of members with 30+ years service are paying extra for a pension that they're already entitled to.

    2. There was a large recruitment drive 30 years ago with the development of the troubles in the north. A lot of these members are due to retire soon too.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 67 ✭✭jypo

Here here charliecroker. Watching sky news now and everyting going on up north(im not making a comparison but our gangland scene is as bad), it just shows how important security and policing is and that it is the one thing that should not be pennypinched . Im sure AGS are puting every pressure on government to maintain recruitment.

when the gardai recruitment finally begins this is what im going in with

youth community worker and soccer referee

tbh I was thinking doing a degree but unsure of what to do

so do you think youth community worker and soccer referee will be enough?

Will a stint in the reserves help increase our chances during the recruitment interviews? Or is this just a matter of opinion with an obvious answer.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 204 ✭✭Ruairi88

Headshot what your doing is excellent.AGS interviews are looking for COMMUNITY,COMMUNITY and COMMUNITY based work.Im a team leader
for a nationwide community group and I also volunteer with another local group!.
I myself will go back to College in Sep and Im going to Uptake a course In Social Care!.So if your Unsure of a course anything connected
to the social field will give you a good shout in the interview!.
IslandFella the reserves should help.in the Interview you will have the chance to tell the panel about your experiences as a reservist!
So from a personal opinion I say go for it!.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 21 IslandFella

Ruairi, have you already participated in the interview process?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 204 ✭✭Ruairi88

Island fella I did My aptitude test in march last year nd was ranked 900 and sumtin cant remem exactly. I did a mock interview
with a guy in Templemore last March....but I had failed Maths for my leaving Cert in which I was repeating the same year so when
I had to submit my Results for the Interview I told them the story and they told Me that I was uneligible to proceed onto the next stage!.
I got My C1 happy now.But I couldn't proceed further on in the competition!.

At interview you must show trough life experiences certain qualities. The board find this out from your scenarios and other questions they ask. the best advice i got on here and from prep courses is be yourself. What you do for a living didn't seen to be important, what you have learned form your experiences and how this has shaped you as a person.

Id seriously recommend anyone to join tha Reserves as it will give you a taste of the job and you'll know if its for you. It will significantly help you in your interview as you can use your scenarios from your time as a reserve which are more relevant to the job you are applying for. Standards for the medical and Physical are the same as the full time.

From talking to a few old college friends who are trying to join the police in england and wales, the competition is huge there and they very rarely recruit, so its almost got to a stage where you really need to be a special constable (their version of a reserve) to suceed in applying. As ireland goes deeper into a recession and more and more people wanting to join the gardai and only 400 places up for grabs per year then the competition will also be huge for the next recruitment drive. Being a reserve may give you an advantage.

However from what i see it takes on average a year to join the reserves as you go through almost the same recruitment process as full timers. Interview, background checks, medical, physical etc... They wouldnt be too happy wasting so much money sendging you to templemore twice.

    Agreed and a good point.

People would really need to think long term maybe a year at least in the Reserves before applying for the full time job

Everyones different I suppose!!! Theres 42 of us and just under half want to become full time members there is an advantage with regards to Garda experience and dealing with public!
