Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

very impressive for May with the nights so short at that time of year. The lowest I recorded this winter was -4.5c.

i think it was a very dry winter as well. havent looked at the data though to confirm

Very marked east/west split with the winter rainfall this year. It was well drier than average in the eastern half yet unusually wet in the western half.

The turloughs in the west have been very low for the last few months though. It seemed like a very dry spring.
Maybe its been very wet in the extreme west but not in the mid west?

has to be true, it's barely rained here since Christmas up untill the cold set in a few days ago and very showery.

Your more or less spot on and maybe my post was a bit too general. Feb in particular was very dry in comparison but overall Dec & Jan, and then March were wetter than average over much of the west (particularly further west - apart from Mace Hd, which seems to be going through a 'dry' spell since the start of 2014) while it remained relatively dry over much of the east. This chart shows rainfall totals for the reporting stations on met.ie for the Dec-March period and set against the national average for just this one period - just to put the data into some sort of context.

Data in the chart C/O Met Eireann (from the daily totals so may differ from the monthly total tables a small bit on their site)

ECM flirting with the idea of a warmer, more settled spell in FI.

That would give lovely warm fohn conditions to the lee of the Wicklow mountains here, wouldn't be surprised to see temps near 25C here if that came off with sunshine.

Have a weather station?, why not join the Ireland Weather Network - http://irelandweather.eu/

FI at this time of year ALWAYS has high pressure sitting over us. Trouble is, it rarely makes it out of FI.

Main thing is though is that it looks like temperatures will be more what they should be for the time of year. FI charts not fantastic but not bad either if you like mediocre weather.

Ah yes, another morning of heavy rain lashing off the roof in the north east to be followed by more heavy showers, at this stage forget the sun, i'd take a week of dry cloudy weather then this muck.

The sun is out here in the south in the wake of that rain. You should see the same clearance later. Showery, but still nice to have bright spells.

All I want is the ground to be dry enough to get animals out to pasture. The ground is saturated.

2013 was our best summer in a long time? I wouldn't mind a horrible cold may if it means better june and july

Please god June will be nice, I don't give a crap about may as long as we get a good June/July/August.

Thats a nice early plume into the south of England. Touching +18 uppers. Would be mid 20s on the ground. A bit further west would have been nice.

Could there be a story behind this?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,788 ✭✭✭tvnutz

THURSDAY and or FRIDAY are likely to see an interval of heavy rain as low pressure moves into the south. Timing is somewhat different on various models and this event could take place mostly overnight. Highs about 12 C with easterly winds developing as the low approaches.

Might this be overnight Thursday into Friday? I'm running a sports day in my school on Thursday 16th...terrified there will be a load of rain and ruin it! Don't care if its not sunny, just as long as its not p!ssing rain all day! :(

May 2013 was pretty crap too as I recall and we know how that summer went so no need for despair yet!

I actually think the Irish summer lasts from the June to August bank holiday weekends. Anything before is Spring after is Autumn. Very short window to get teal summer weather.

Statistically, it extends to the very early days of September.

That is true - but what are the chances of 3 good summers in a row??Very low looking at past stats. Plus this year so far has more of a 2011 feel which had a great April followed by a pretty dreadfull summer. El Nino conditions ring alarm bells too for our prospects this year:(

Actually a quick review of the last 5 Mays doesn't make for pretty reading its generally been pretty mediocre to bad. However I tend to take the view that on average our climate is due a bad summer again this year. The last 2 simmers have been good made a lot better in some peoples minds by the 6 that went before them but the weather at present is poor for late spring regardless.

Not a bad one this morning not roasting but warmer than I thought it would be

first dry day we've had since the 3rd week of April. Terrible May here so far, temps have struggled to make it past 12C all month and looks like after this 24 hour respite were back to rain, wind and temps will barely making 9-11C over next few days. This May is almost a repeat of May 2013. We will be lighting fires for at least another week by the looks of it.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 6,466 ✭✭✭Lumi

First dry day in 19 days in Galway city.
Today was fabulous though, warm and sunny witha high of 18.2C :)

Breezy here in Tipp warm in the sun but chilly out of it. Its dry and bright at least but I wouldn't be getting too excited the forecast is gloomy.
