If your dress is in any way complex or beaded etc, then I'd strongly recommend going to a dressmaker who specialises in wedding dresses for alterations. Not to mention, the zip yard are frightfully expensive. They quoted me €35 for very basic alterations to a high-street dress, but my dressmaker altered my whole wedding dress for €100!

I don't mind so much as I'm just planning on finding my style. I have an image in my head and have found a dress online that I love so I'm hoping to try on a similar style to confirm if I like it before I go ordering. Thanks for the zip yard recommendation too, they are just down the road!

Faith I have heard that about them being expensive too! Who done your dress?

That's a good idea chew chew. There will be a good few offers on again and sample sales too. I thought I would definitely go with a fishtail but in the end I only liked one fish tail on me. I would've went for that one but I preffered the one I went with that bit more. Its a fit and flare

A dressmaker and seamstress in Cork did mine. She also designs and makes her own gowns so she really knows her way around a wedding dress.

Irishgirl I know you're, geographically, near me and I actually have had a lady who does alterations recommended to me a few times. My mam is actually amazing at alterations but she goes to this woman for her own stuff!

I'm super excited about dress shopping! More for my bridesmaids though :D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,609 ✭✭✭irishgirl19

Ah thats great thanks. I'd rather go to a seamstress. Me too will probably leave bridesmaids until next year though

Is anyone thinking of doing anything a bit different they want to share? Not trying to pinch ideas (oh, what a lie!) but be interesting to hear what ye have planned.

We're hoping to do a first look early and then have our ceremony around 3.30 and straight into wine and then dinner with no waiting around for photos. Get all that out of the way early so we can
Spend as much time as possible with friends and family. :) Just talking to my Dad at the weekend and it turns out my folks wedding didn't start til 4 and was black tie- quite the scandal in rural Ireland in the early 70's! Well, that and my Dad converting to COI to marry my Mam. :D

I presume this thread isn't just for the Brides! Myself and my partner are getting married August 2017 and we've planned with the photographer & videographer to take our couple pictures in the morning before the ceremony. We'll be staying in the hotel room together the night before anyway so it's not an issue seeing each other before the ceremony.

So hopefully we'll have most of it done (except the bridal party & family etc) before the drinks reception. Gives us more time to hang out with the guests and drink prosecco!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,512 ✭✭✭baby and crumble

That's our plan too. Since we're both brides seems weird for one of us to have to stay at home and the other get a night in a hotel alone!!! :D

Same as us! Didn't want to have to toss a coin to see who gets the suite the night before the wedding as we're leaving town for the wedding..

We're incredibly lucky to have the venue to ourselves with lots of outside space. I do not want a stuffy, formal kind of wedding at all. I was going to get a few one those giant garden games like Jenga, Connet 4, Croquet. Hopefully it'll be a scorcher of a day and people will be outside sipping on their drinks having lots of fun :)

I'm still researching funkier ideas too :)

I was thinking of getting an indoor bouncy castle to keep kids entertained but in saying that I haven't ran it by the hotel yet

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,512 ✭✭✭baby and crumble

That sounds deadly! We're having a winter wedding but if there was a possibility of good weather is love the games! Sounds like great fun :)

In other news, we won an engagement shoot today! We entered at a wedding fair a few weeks ago and it's with a photographer we really like so yay!

Nice one, congrats. Our photographer threw in a free photoshoot with our package which was sound!

I was at a wedding fair a few weeks ago and there were a couple of kids clubs there that run special kids clubs at weddings with activities and stuff. Not sure how much (since we won't really have kids at ours, didn't really bother looking at them in detail) but might be worth looking into?

Yeah ill have to look into it. I haven't even been to one wedding fair yet! :-(

They're kinda head melting tbh. The vendors can get a little crazed. The hotels were very pushy even when we told them we had a venue. "What about the hen night?!!?" We just ended up talking to a couple of photographers and taking fliers from others and going through them at home. Dumped most of them once we could actually think clearly.

Best way to do it to be honest, myself and herself went to the RDS wedding show and we just picked up brochures from any places that interested us, when we got home we just kept cycling through them until we limited it to a few places we wanted to go and see, we feel it worked well and talking to them at the event would have been a real headache.

I used to take a stand at the wedding journal show but what I found is that brides and (dragged along) grooms :D got bombarded by several suppliers offering the same product and most times would just booked the cheapest without actually checking any of them out properly to see if they are the right fit for your wedding and for you.

I found sites like WOL and the likes had a certain clique and if you didn't fall into what was expected you wouldn't get the best information. I love the weddings sections of boards. I am doing this DJ thing nearly 30 years and I still learn things from other brides & grooms to be. I find this forum to be one of the best sources for advice for all things weddings!

We now live in a digital age and with that comes the power of google. Sit down and search for the best rated hotels, photographers, photo booth, make up, DJs, no bands though they're all rubbish!!!! :D:D:D Ask LOADS of questions! The final thing is ask for a personal recommendation from someone you know.

So if any 2017 brides have any questions about anything to do with weddings please ask. I will do my best to help.

Well, we've picked out our engagement rings! Just waiting for mine to be resized. It's a serious bit of kit, I'm delighted with it. Hers is an old family heirloom and it already fit her perfectly which is awesome. Hopefully putting down deposits this week on hotel and officiant and then I'm going to chill out for a while.

    Hopefully. :p

Baby and crumble that's great!! Say you both are relieved! :D what month are ye again?

I went (obligatory) dress shopping at the weekend. Definitely found my style. Oh my god the attached price tags! Scandalous!!

B&C what kind of outfit are you planning?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 364 ✭✭lovelystuff

Thought I'd hop back in because we've had a very productive few weeks! We have the venue, humanist, band, makeup, hair, flowers and cake booked! Meeting our preferred photographer next week, then hoping to get the video and ceremony music booked. Its nice getting things ticked off so we can just enjoy the run up. I'm planning zero diy, I just want a relaxed day :)

We're November. We thought we were so ahead
Of the curve with venue and stuff! But we're super happy with our date and venue. And our registrar too.

I identify as butch so my outfit will be more like something a guy would wear. Current plan is a matching burgundy velvet blazer and waistcoat, grey trousers and a bow tie. I quite into the whole dapper thing- so most likely it'll take a lot to make me happy. I'm quite particular in my own way. ;)

And I've been watching say yes to the dress. Jesus the prices!!!!

    Hi guys,

We plan on getting married in 2017. We are going engagement ring shopping shortly. Should we go to Antwerp or buy it in Ireland? Any advice appreciated.

Sounds fantastic B&C!! I love the idea of burgundy velvet. Can kinda picture it :D

I watched say yes to the dress last Friday for the first time. I actually had tears from laughter. The most ridiculous nonsense I've ever seen in my life :D

I'm not going to lie, watching it makes me feel far better about my life. I saw one dress going for $24,000.:eek: Like, come on. It'd want to be made of actual gold and angel tears to be worth that!

    Angel tears :D

The one I watched, zelda was 46, and had never met her husband to be. They had an online relationship but they haven't met although he did go to school with her sister but she hasn't seen him since 1987!!!!

    So.

Guess who got to be the Celebrant for the FIRST EVER SAME SEX WEDDING in Smock Alley, in the full 500 years it's stood there?!

    Yes! MEEEEEEE!!!!

And it was fabulous! Highly recommend the venue to anyone on the hunt, the seats were arranged in a circular layout and it was stunning. A little more to think about from the celebrant's perspective in terms of addressing everyone, but I'd highly recommend.

Anyone else planning to use it?

    :-)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,512 ✭✭✭baby and crumble

We looked at Smock Alley but it was just far too expensive for us.

I really like circular seat arrangements though.

Thanks guys. Yeah, she's more of a dress kinda girl. I think currently the running total of dresses for the day is at 2 for her, however that may indeed change. :p

I've never felt comfortable in dresses or really in feminine clothing (so a womens suit isn't really going to cut the mustard either!). I figured now's the time to go all out on some really glam versions of what I wear on nights out. Problem is finding a tailor who "gets" what I want. You know? I don't want a feminine cut, but I also don't want to hide my body shape. I love being a woman- I'm just a slightly not traditional kind. But a lot of tailors and alterations places will balk at the idea, or just have no experience doing what I want them to do. So it'll take time to find the right thing.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,609 ✭✭✭irishgirl19

2 dresses very nice! I'm sure you will find a good tailor. You'll probably know yourself, you'll get a vibe when you meet them whether they'll be the right person for the job :-)

Picked up my engagement ring today and it's still too big! Entirely my own fault too and I'm raging. The jeweller was like "that's your size" when trying on samples rings for sizing and I insisted it felt too tight and wanted it a size bigger. It's literally falling off my finger and I have nobody but myself to blame. :( Note to self- trust the experts!!! Probably a good lesson to learn throughout this whole process!!!

When I got my engagement ring I had to get it resized twice on the same day. It took half an hour each time, as they could do it in the shop I bought it from. You might consider taking it to a jeweller with a workshop so they can fix it pretty much on the spot.

EDIT: I should probably mention that the reason they resized it twice was because I also didn't listen to the jeweller! I think I was scared I might not be able to take it off. Completely unfounded fear, but still. :o

Is anyone else having more than one dress?
It's looking like I'll be making a slimmer dress and then a big removable skirt because I can't make up my mind on what I want. :o The plan is to have the overskirt on for the ceremony and then remove it for the reception.
Is that too much? I feel like I need validation on this one!

Also, anyone having a dress that isn't white? :P

Yep, my fiancée is planning two. A 50's tea dress and a slinkier velvet number. I'm planning on swapping out my shirt and bow tie for a different colour and maybe a proper cravat (ie not a scrunch tie. Those are NOT cravats!).

June 2017 here, have venue and solemniser sorted and that's it :) Getting cracking with music etc now.

Not really stressing over it I want it to be relaxed as poss.

Hopefully going wedding dress shopping soon also. Looking for something boho / a bit different as my venue isn't your typical hotel/function room type

  • Registered Users Posts: 214 ✭✭hotmatottie10

I havent a clue to be honest what i want in a style of a dress. I Think i will look at the end of the summer and just work on shifting some weight. Blue was the traditional color for wedding dresses in celtic times. But i wont be going blue, a traditional white dress isnt me. So we will have to see. Ive entered a few competitions just for the crack but im skeptical about it all. Id like to get my teeth whitened for the big day, id like that.
