Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. The IRFU were selected to host the World Rugby Women's Sevens Series Qualifier 2015, which will see 12 teams, including Olympic qualified Brazil and Colombia, compete for the two remaining places on the coveted 2015-16 World Rugby Women's Sevens Series.
Women's Sevens Dublin will be held in UCD on the 22nd and 23rd of August.

Good to see this being held here. Would be great to see Irish side getting a world series place

While all the teams to compete in the mens European repechage are not confirmed the groups are.
Ireland will be in group A with the teams that finish 5th, 10th and 11th in the Grand Prix series
    Group B is 6th 9th, 12th and Latvia and Group C is Poland, Ukraine, 7th, 8th

Germany, Georgia and Italy are currently in 5th, 10th, 11th and teams will be confirmed after the Exeter 7s next weekend

The 3rd leg of Grand Prix is live on Sky Sports 1 all day and how teams do determines their group for the European repechage....

    Quarters tomorrow are
    France v Wales
    England v Lithuania
    Russia v Spain
    Germany v Georgia

    Bowl Semis are
    Portugal v Romania
    Italy v Belgium

Too hard at this stage to say how things will end up with respect to overall positions and who we will meet in European repechage

Two teams that impressed me were Russia who whipped Wales and Lithuania who scored a brilliant last second try to beat Italy. They looked good in the other two matches they played and have a few tanks in their team. Plus Germany who also looked very impressive.

The winners of the quarters will be France, England, Russia and Germany.

Think Spain may beat Russia but agree on the other quarters.
Seb Fromm, currently playing AIL w/ Trinity has looked good enough for the Germans...

It should be interesting. Russia beat Georgia and Wales fairly well and didn't play a few of their front line players in the Georgia match. Also they beat Belguim but that isn't anything to speak off. I watched them in the world series playoff match in Hong Kong and when they had to went up a few gears.

Russia looked good. No surprise they have embraced it with it an Olympic sport.
    Germany were good as well.

I got it right with quarters.....
France, England, Spain and Germany all into semis and those results mean France are through to Rio and Spain have the global repechage place

As we play 5th, 10th and 11th in our group in Lisbon next week we will play either Germany/Russia, Italy and Georgia

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,967 ✭✭✭✭The Lost Sheep

Our group is decided bar whether its Germany or Russia. That will be decided by how Germany do versus Spain. So Italy, Georgia with us and either one Ger/Rus....

The other groups will be Germany/Russia, Lithuania, Romania and Latvia
and Portugal, Belgium, Poland and Ukraine

France join Brazil, New Zealand, Argentina, Fiji, Great Britain*, Argentina and USA in the Olympics. The Asian, African and Oceanic reps will be decided in November and the final spot next year in world repechage

We are into the European repechage and play Russia, Georgia and Italy in our group.Germany, Lithuania, Romania and Latvia and Portugal, Belgium, Poland and Ukraine are the other groups in that competition which is in 2 weeks time in Lisbon.
We have to finish in the top 3 there to qualify for the world repechage

Uruguay, Chile, Canada, Mexico, Spain, the 3 from European repechage, 3 from Asian championships, 3 from African championships and 2 from oceanic championships will be the teams in the world repechage.

They play Belgium, Romania and Ukraine in the group stage and like the men they must finish in the top 3 to qualify for the world repechage

52-0 win over Romania. Solid start

Men's team drew 19-19 with Russia to start. They'll need to open up against Italy and Georgia I guess.

Was a good recovery after being 19-5 down. Big step up from the opposition that they were facing a few weeks back.

I presume we need to top our group to go through in the Mens?

Russia should be our toughest opposition. They just beat Italy 31-7.

Georgia beat Italy 12-7, so hopefully we should be able to beat them. We'll need to give them a good beating to stay in touch with Russia.

Either 21-19 or 21-17 to Ireland, I think. I missed the last conversion so not sure if they got it or not.

    Uphill battle to qualify so?

Relying on Georgia to do a number on Russia?

    For anyone that is interested...

So who gets through to the final Olympic qualifying round depends on the winners in each group? That's really tough considering how difficult our group is. I thought it would be the final standings from the knock out stages.

I presume it's the 2 finalists and the 3rd place playoff winners.

Interesting to watch the Germany/Lithuania Portugal/Belgium games, they're the other strong teams at this level although I'd say Georgia would give them a good game. Georgia will likely be playing Germany tomorrow from what I can work out, that could be a close one.

What's the format for knock out stages of this tomorrow?
Is it 3 group winners plus best runner up in semis or top 8 into quather finals?

    Wikipedia has it as quarter-finals.
Looking at other 7s tournaments it's the top 2 from each group plus 2 more as best 3rd place team from group stage.
It's seeded by points earned, then points scored difference.
Ireland had the toughest group with Russia and Georgia, so will prob come 2nd with lowest points of a 2nd placed team. Likewise Russia will prob finish 1st with lowest points difference if they beat Georgia.
That puts them 3rd seed, and Ireland 6th seed, and 3 should play 6 in the quarters.
So it Looks like Ireland may be faced with Russia again in the quarter final, unless there's a rule against playing a team from same group.
Anyone have more info on this?

If it is done by points earned, we should end up being the top placed 2nd placed team, by virtue of the draw against Russia. On the flip side, if Russia fail to win against Georgia, we will likely be the lowest placed 1st place finisher.
It seems to be 3 points for a win, 2 for a draw, 1 for a loss, and we have 8 points (2 wins and a draw). The only way for us to not be top-seeded 2nd place team is for the other games between pool leaders (Germany vs Lithuania and Belgium vs Portugal) to end in draws.

Its not the group winners. its who finish top after the playoffs at the end

Great result for the lads topping the group (with a little help from the Georgians), especially since all their opposition came from Grand Prix series. Roll on tomorrow

    Lithuania in the quarters?

    Lithuania in the quarters?

Yes Lithuania. Then we play the winner of Portugal(2)-Russia(7) in the semis.

Yes Lithuania. Then we play the winner of Portugal(2)-Russia(7) in the semis.

That's a good draw, Ireland have to beat Lithuania, it's probably 50/50, and then a tough semi would await with either Russia or Portugal to guarantee qualification to the next tournament, and even if we lost the semi, 1 of Georgia or Belgium will be on the other side of the semis most likely facing Germany who should win that semi, so 3rd/4th playoff would be Georgia or Belgium, and again 50/50 there, so it's all to play for.
    I'd be optimistic.

Does anyone know, if Ireland get through to the next tournament, will the squad be strengthened with pro players? It would be a bit of a dilemma to drop players after they've come this far.

When you say pro players... Who do you have in mind?
The next tournament if we get through this weekend is not going to be for 7/8 months and will be In the middle of the 15s season. who would you be replacing these players with?

I was just wondering if it might be treated like the 6 Nations where top players would be allowed a break from club duty to represent the country.
I'd guess any top winger (or any position really) with pace that could sidestep, pass and could cover ground well to make tackles, would be a good 7s player. Gilroy or Zebo for example.
Or can anyone suggest anyone else that would be good?

You'll never get top level 15s players playing 7s, if you look at the way the England do it, a lot of their players come from championship sides and academies etc, I think the only kind of pro players you'd see get called up would be fringe players for bigger teams.

I'd imagine the squad will stay more or less the same.

Depends on the country but we wont see top end guys competing for us considering how 7s is treated here now and in the past....

You will never see that happening. It isn't so simple a game to say anyone with pace, sidestep would be good at 7s. its a totally different game and having refereed a small bit of 7s that's my experience of it

  • Registered Users Posts: 178 ✭✭Braken

Considering everything we are not doing too bad...BUT...we are not going to progress unless we have contracted players....guys full time on maybe €25,000 a year....also as LS said its a totally different game especially at the top and we need to get a specific 7s coaching module in place as other countries have done..
We have the talent all depends if the IRFU have the desire...
