There’s no business like snow business. I’ll be getting a sled out of the shed just in case to take the kids on... never know could happen. I’ll also be panic buying 50 loaves of Brennan’s bread!

Im worried now. Much stronger winds forecast than before. These could scupper snow chances for many at least blowing in off a slightly milder Atlantic.

We need calmer winds for snow

HIRLAM certainly the pick of the bunch this morning and I believe HARMONIE is looking good for Saturday night, interesting weekend ahead!

All depends on how far north the occlusion gets. It might not be very active but we'll see.

MT does not seem to be going for it in his forecast this morning

Ive been looking at this all week.

It doesnt look marginal to me at all. Id say there is a high chance of lying snow at lower levels this weekend.

It may not last long but many places more especially inland will see lying snow for a while on Saturday or Sunday.

If the wind is light and little solar radiation its the perfect conditions.

    Ive the camera on standby.

It will definitely snow in Ireland this weekend.

I can't see it lasting long at lower levels, ground temperatures are still quite high.
    Quickly melt

I don't care as long as we see some white gold!
I'll find the permanent stuff on higher ground either way.

There is a real risk now of significant snowfall in the southern half of the country on Saturday. 5 - 10 cm's.

There is a real risk now of significant snowfall in the southern half of the country on Saturday. 5 - 10 cm's (locally higher) away from south facing coasts in increasingly likely, more on high ground. Disruptive.

Too tired to look but what wind direction?

Does no sea breeze mean Dublin 4 will get any snow please?

Even if snow does fall from the sky in D4, it's HIGHLY unlikely to stick, due to a combination of urban heat island effect, height above sea level being more or less 0m and the fact that it's a busy area with plenty of foot and road traffic meaning no time for light (to moderate at best) snow to settle given the air temperatures at the time. I would say most of Dublin city will just see rain, maybe a bit of sleet or a few bits of wet snow from time to time however it's still not certain where the precipitation will be nor what the intensity will be, country wide.

This morning's Hi res WRF shows the south east just rain ,with inland Midlands most with wintry precipitation Saturday evening. Waiting on the next one.

5-10 cms? Now hang on, everyone needs to cool the jets(tream) a bit, there is nothing in the Uppers and DP forecast to suggest anything more than minor high level accumulations of snow and cold rain and hail at lower levels across the southern half of the island.

    The latest from Met Eireann.

Blustery this evening and overnight with fairly widespread showers and more persistent rain in southern
counties for a time. The lengthiest dry and clear spells will occur in eastern counties. The showers will
turn increasingly wintry later in the night with localised falls of sleet and snow.
    Cold and turning
frosty later with the risk of ice and some lying snow.
Minimum temperatures ranging -1 to +3 degrees
in fresh to strong westerly winds with gales on Atlantic

    Tomorrow

Saturday will start cold and frosty with scattered wintry showers and some lying snow. There will
be further wintry showers during the day, frequent in the southwest, west and north with the
continued risk of snowfall. The lengthiest dry and bright spells will occur over the eastern half
of the country. Highest temperatures of 3 to 6 degrees in fresh to strong southwest winds.

Status Yellow - Snow/Ice warning for Cavan, Donegal, Leitrim, Mayo, Roscommon and Sligo
Wintry showers will give localised accumulations of hail and snow, compacting to ice in some areas and leading to hazardous driving conditions.

Any chance of someone ratcheting up the temperature a bit. I'm coming home this weekend after being in 30-35C for the last 3 weeks.

you might be in luck with milder temperatures in about a weeks time. This weekend and most of next week will be staying in the single digits.

always a good sign to see sleet falling out over the ocean, just to the west of Mayo now on the radar.

Keep in mind the radar is only guessing the precip, and is often wrong.

The GFS soundings show things on the right side of marginal for the precipitation to fall as snow, at least at nightime. The sounding below, for around the Portlaoise area, right in the middle of that blob of precip at midnight tomorrow, shows the wetbulb below zero and temperature just on zero. Clicking at other locations within that blob shows slight variations, some better, some worse, but this one is a good indication of the average.

The Arpege soundings on Meteociel are showing nothing in the way of snow at all, but this does have a slight warm bias at times, I've found. The WRT soundings aren't loading for some reason. So right now we only have the GFS to go on, which is not something I'd be putting the house on, but we'll see how it goes.

Laois right in the middle of that blob of snow. I'll bag it up and keep it in the freezer it if it happens, might not see any for the rest of winter :p

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 23,901 ✭✭✭✭Kermit.de.frog

Gonna retreat a little bit from my own forecast earlier of 5 - 10 cm.

    I'll go with 2 - 4 cm generally.

I still think think there will be a nice surprise for some in the south as well tomorrow evening but it looks hit and miss and will be a 'nowcast'. As GL mentions variables are the right side broadly but where will the focus of precipitation be?

Very difficult, if not impossible, to be anything other than vague on this one.

Which only contributes to the fun :)

not tracking much but is this just for weekend or can we expect it to fall into next week Monday etc ? as weather seems all over the place rainy mild, to frosty but not dipping below 0 in most areas, for last couple weeks. disaster when it comes to getting flu when these changes happen daily.

Freezing levels dropping overnight and seem to have a corridor of best possibility move up through the SW through Clare, Galway , Connaught in general , North Midlands and into the Northern counties. ECM not going for much accumulations apart from the W and NW, N for now. Think there will be increasingly widespread wintry showers of rain, sleet and snow overnight into tomorrow. The front should make landfall in the mid morning into the SW and from this we should get more concentrated falls of Sleet and snow and rain . Might even get hail and lightning along Atlantic coasts. Sunday again ECM showing from mid morning the W getting a good pasting of snow, heavy in places and moving up to the NW and N in the afternoon into the evening.
