Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

I wouldn't be a fan of Ray on radio or Saturday chat show format but I actually think he looks comfortable doing this gig and it wasn't too bad at all

Ya I'm thinking the same, can't stand him on the radio but he works well enough in this setting.

I must have half listened to the ad for this. I thought it was on at 6:30pm Monday to Friday :D

I think this show is aimed at adults who were small when this was on originally. 6.30 Monday to Friday airtime would make no sense because a lot of people that age would be working or travelling to and from work. A weekend airtime might allow more people to sit down and watch.

I'll see ye all on the Glenroe thread at 8:30. Gonna try to get both the English essay and the Irish essay done before then.

You have to say, the show still works. It's almost like they left the studio on a Friday and came back on the Monday, not many years later.

The only issue I could see is possibly Dustin saying something to get the show cancelled. As the post above demonstrates, we are now in different times, and it is only a matter of time before Dustin terminally offends someone.

That makes a lot of sense. We are in a different times where many people get easily offended. I hope it doesn't happen. I laughed so much at his Fair City joke this evening. It was so funny.

Enjoyable trip down memory lane. Will probably be tweaked from week to week to see what works.
Presume the inserts, rotten apple club etc are prerecorded.
The physical side of puppetry (lying on the floor with arms held up for extended periods etc) must get tougher to perform as you get older. Presume all of them are around mid 50s now.

That was great fun, it's brilliant that it's on between now and Christmas.

What a bunch of moany ****es having a whinge minutes into the start of it though.

The show tonight only served to reinforce my memory of me only watching Network 2 in the afternoon and early evening because of the great American shows on offer and not really being interested in the segway sketches.

ICE was probably RTE's best attempt at this kind of show if anyone remembers it. These Den sketches were hit and miss, Elev8 wasn't great and SWipeTV was horrendous, so probably a good thing RTE stopped making these types of shows

Really enjoyed it except for the Rotten Apple club bit. I'm sure they'll play around with it as the weeks go by.
It really suits Ray and he's obviously enjoying doing it. He seems natural as opposed to being awkward like on the radio show. I could see him doing a good job on the Toy Show if Tubbs had to pull out for any reason.

I absolutely loved it. LOVED IT!! Can't wait for next week. I always preferred Ian's Den, and I actually can't stand Ray these days, but fair play to him he is very good at this and it suits him so much more. Hard to believe a fella who can be such good craic with the puppets is so awkward and dull in his other shows.

The reggae birthdays were class in fairness. And Dustin talking to Darragh and chatting up his 37 year old mam. Great format, I thought it was a bit in the middle between kids and adults at the start but it really grew on me, I'd love to have my nephew over to watch it with us. A lovely mix of stuff.

"Speaking of artists we were talking to Ronan earlier, haha artists, Ronan Keating!"

That Cork comedian is very jarring and difficult to watch at times but I reckon she'll get better when her confidence improves.

There is a load of of videos going around of them..the mother works in social media marketing etc so I've read so I'm guessing she is trying to push them as social media stars

To be fair they're great little lads and they don't seem to have a bother getting up and performing.

RTÉ have a lot of lame ducks in terms of programming but some of their documentaries and instances like this where they platform young people could redeem them and potentially drag back some viewership. If only they would make some half decent dramas and comedies people might even pay the licence fee.

    Absolutely loved this.
Huge fan of Dustin, Zig & Zag (especially in their Big Breakfast days) not so much D'Arcy but unbelievably this still fits like a comfortable old shoe for the lovable useless radio guy ;)

PS Bring back Big Breakfast, Channel 4!

PPS Zag's reggae birthdays was brilliant

Switched off after 10 minutes as did last every viewer according to the Sunday ratings report. Finding Joy on Saturday is the same. Lost nearly every viewer coming in. Fab lead. No viewers left.

What ratings did it get? Clearly every last viewer didn’t switch it off as I watched it all as did others who have contributed to this thread.

It came out of the 6.01 News. Massive 60% viewer drop. Earlier after the Bank Holiday, Reeling In The Years 1966 after the 6.01 left in every viewer and even topped the Late Late for the week. Viewers obviously enjoyed looking at a programme from RTE in the '60s than this garbage.

Was Ray's girlfriend Geri Maye on it?

This is not true no way would RTE broadcast that on the news its never put out on the 6 news your just trolling and making it up.

I think the poster is trying to say it was on after the 6 1 news which had a viewership of X. X-Y stopped watching after the news instead of continuing on to watch the Den. So they lost Y amount of viewers from the news despite high numbers watching the news. As opposed to reeling in the years on another evening which managed to retain those viewers.
I think that is what the poster is trying to say but I don't know where those figures would be available.

As an aside, who is Dustin? (I should probably know this at this stage)
What has he been doing for the past 15 years or so?
One would think he would have a great career in comedy and/or some other format (not as Dustin)

    Re Viewership -

The Den averaged a highly respectable share of over 25% of TV viewers across most main audiences.

289,000 adults tuned in and re-connected with their youth.

Interestingly, younger adults (15-34 year olds) were also drawn in, with an average of 69,000 viewers. This provided the DEN with a share of over 33% with an audience that would only have been born or in infancy when the original was in its prime.

    I thought this was great.

Like a reunion with people you went to school with decades ago but haven't seen since, It could have fallen flat but they captured a lot of what made The Den such a memorable show.

    The hour flew by.

It was about as good as one could realistically hope for. Well, OK, there are a few things they could throw in, but they may lean too far toward nostalgia if they did them.

I thought it was funny that Dustin went back and forth between his current voice and they one he used to use up til around 2000.

A Christmas special would be magical.

Maybe with Podge and Rodge kidnapping Santa again. Although they mightn't want to move P&R back to a more family friendly hour.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 29,284 ✭✭✭✭CastorTroy

Due to travel restrictions they can't travel to the North Pole. Though I guess rescuing Santa is considered essential travel.

I think the worst part of it was the technical issues due to the video calls.
Though they did get to use the most used question of the year "Are you on mute?"
