Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

    Path of the Warrior
    Asgard's Wrath
Walking Dead: Saints and Sinners (along with about 10 other games as part of "that" Humble Bundle)
    Budget Cuts
Pixel Ripped 89/95 combo for Quest (actually I won this)
plus a few others I can't think of....

Not to mention getting about 7 or 8 Switch Games like Luigi's Mansion 3 / Mario All Stars / Horace / Hue ... and some PS4 games like Last of Us Part 2

I was able to get virtual desktop working last night by dropping all the graphics settings to the lowest and connecting to 5ghz wifi. My latency was still bouncing from 60-100 but its an improvement from 300+. Going to see about getting a spare router and connect to PC and then to powerline adaptor as well as get a long (25m) Cat5e cable to connect direct to router. Have to talk nice to one of the lads in Telecoms department in work to swindle these..:D

My Anker cable still wont let me connect Oculus Link over 3.0 USB even though it works for Side Quest. Something strange there.. As well as that headset is charging over cable connected to 3.0 USB

So far not so great my end. Im not sure if I just dont have the settings set correctly.

    I have the Archer AX1500 wifi6 router.

    Cat7 cable.

Vodafone internet ( 72 Mbps download speed and 16Mbps upload )
Virtual desktop steamer bounces around 95ms whilst playing phasmophobia.
My pc connects on virtual desktop on 5Ghz 1200Mbps.

My setup is Modem at front door connected to the archer router with a 10m cat 7 cable. I then have a 10m cat7 cable going from the archer router to the pc. My oculus quest is 2 metres from the router.

This is the guide I followed https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lUl4BPnqbkE&t=1730s

Any suggestions to improve the latency

Anything between the quest and router like a wall or anything? Line of sight is best

No nothing. I'm sat beside the router. I have the cable running up the hallway and into the sitting room. It's just temporary whilst i tested the speed etc.
Could the pc and gfx card effect the latency? As in the spec

Been messing around with my set up as well tonight. Got my hands on a second F2000 Eir router. Can I use this to connect my PC to powerline adaptor? Have tried but does not seem to want to work.

What settings are you using in Virtual Desktop in the menu you see in headset?

In particular the Streaming menu option.

Have you got the latest version of the streamer installed? 1.18.7 afaik.

Try disconnecting the modem from the router and just connect to PC via local network on the router.

Also make sure to use H.264 encoding on the streamer app.

    Yes its 1.18.7.

Streaming options are : Vr gfx quality medium, Frame rate 60fps, Vr bitrate 60Mbps.

    try

medium settings, 80 hz, 55 mbps bitrate

Also are any values showing in yellow under the computer section? This might indicate where something is struggling.

Enable sliced encoding too on the main tab.

You don't have any processes running like an anti-virus or firewall slowing the connection?

What latency are you getting just on the desktop itself? No VR running I mean.

Doom 3 has been updated with several fixes so I'm going to give it another go tonight.

Also going to load in a HD Texture pack: https://mega.nz/file/d0cTgQbb#qog-a3T-SgRLqtgJ5cLh9y9OpJrlY2waRUCS7eRKp_k

And Trent Reznor sound pack for guns: https://download.cnet.com/Doom-3-Trent-Reznor-sound-pack/3000-7441_4-10309314.html

Just copy both pak files to the "base" folder on the headset in the Doom 3 folder (overwriting whatever files are there)

EDIT: actually just checking the readme in the sound pack it suggests renaming the existing pak file in an incremental format, so pak005 should be renamed to pak006, pak006 should be pak007 etc... before copying in this pak005 file

It's perhaps because Trent Reznor didn't complete sounds for everything so perhaps we still need sound effects for everything else.

EDIT 2: The Doom3 dev suggested instead just rename the sound file to: pak999.pk4
that way it gets loaded last and overwrites only the replaced sounds

Have not tried to get Virtual Desktop working again for a few days but what ever I done I got it working earlier. Still have PC hooked direct to Power Line socket. Latency averaging about 40. No orange figures on the performance overlay for the majority of the time. Even got it working with Asgards Wraith on Low with no link cable.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,078 ✭✭✭fenris

It is worth turning off Nvidia overlay if you have it on, as it seems to be bugged and impacts performance especially for SteamVR
Apparently a patch is on its way, this is part of what messed up Starwars Squadrons on SteamVR at launch.

    Hey guys!

I mentioned to my dad just before Xmas that if I was getting a headset, I'd get the quest 2 and lo and behold the jerk bought one on a whim just before Xmas. Can't complain too much though as he bought me one too as my Xmas present that I've only gotten my hands on this week due to isolation.

So now that I've got it set up, I'm trying to catch up with a few things that I'd really appreciate some information on:
    1. Papa bear bought a good few games already and we're trying to see if we can swap them with each other. I've done this sort of thing with playstation and nintendo before but this is a new ecosystem for me.
    2. Found the forehead really felt sore after 45 mins the first time I used it. It was a bit better today but still hurts a bit, is there a guide for setting up the straps? Doesn't help the kids get on it regularly to mess with them :D
    3. At this moment the only thing I've tried is beat sabre, any good games/apps to look into?
    4. I presume it makes much more sense financially not to be using the occulus store for everything, are people primarily purchasing games/apps elsewhere?

Looking forward to getting some time with it and learning more about my new toy!

Just on this, do you have a powerful VR-compatible gaming PC you can connect it to? That opens up the opportunity to buy PCVR games on Steam and play them wirelessly.

If not then you can just buy games native to the Quest alone on the Oculus Store.

You'll need an aftermarket replacement strap, the headset is borderline unusable its so uncomfortable without one. Elite strap seems to be the most popular. Look into a replacement facial interface too, vrcover seems to be popular. There are chinese clones for both knocking about too.

Is there any consensus on a head strap available on amazon?

Tbh they all look identical to me (probably all coming off the same assembly line :D), but not sure if these are modified Quest 1 straps or something and it's still best to wait?

Got the silicon VR cover from a recommendation here and it's a massive improvement, hoping a new strap will be similar.

I got the fake elite and a PU cushion face cover from AliExpress. I didn’t feel the benefit straight away, but recently watched a 2.5 hour movie without experiencing any discomfort. This is something I couldn’t do on Q1 or the out of the box set up on Q2.

From reading some comparison reviews the official elite seems to be marginally better than fake elite, halo, and franklinQuest.

I’ve got the halo ordered, so looking forward to trying that when it arrives.

On a side note, it was such a nice experience watching a movie in BigScreen betas theatre. Obviously not the same as a cinema experience, but it was pretty dam close.

Star ware Squadrons is pretty amazing to be honest. It's a little cumbersome to load into the game but amazing when you#'re flying about. Playing with an Xbox 360 controller and love it. Think my PC should be able to output to the headset un ultra as the game plays fine on my 34" screen OK but the framerate seems to take a noticeable dip from what I would expect. I'll have to tinker with it the in game VR settings.

    The Halo came this week.

Like the fake elite, I wasn’t impressed upon initial impressions, but after I fiddled around with it for a day or so, it got much better.

I think the Halo will be my go to strap for watching movies,

My main issue so far is that the headset feels a bit wobbly, this happens because it sits on your forehead rather than pressed against the face, so probably not good for games like Beat Saber.

It’s really comfortable, probably more so than the fake elite, I think it would be great for stationary games like Phantom: Covert Ops, and I Expect You To Die. Whereas the Fake elites will be good for Thrill of the Fight, BoxVR etc.

Very handy to click them on/off. Have to say, it’s a great design from Facebook.

I struggled for about 3 minutes before I got annoyed and watched a video. It’s simple when you’ve done it once, and once it’s assembled it’s easy to clip off and back on again.

Bought a quest 2. Didn't realise the FB account thing, unused to have a FB account but haven't used it in years and think I actually deactivated by it years ago. So created another FB account with a real name and real phone number...

Just make sure to add a profile pic.. friend some people.. put up a few posts.

I reckon give it a few days.

If all ok, then try linking it.

The Facebook guys recommended your "Facebook account should be in good standing order" before linking which I think means just to show it's got some human activity on it.

Jesus I can't even order the bloody thing without disabling my ad blocker and allowing all their tracking tools access. Really want one of these but they are really turning me off with their data harvesting b.s.

Gonna try and find a shop that sells it and pay cash...

As for the facebook account, they say in their Q&A if you're only setting it up to use with Oculus then that is ok, it can be used purely for logging into your oculus. So you don't need to keep it "active" by having social facebook activity on it.

    https://support.oculus.com/1775053542763938
There's no need to use Facebook for anything other than logging in to Oculus if you don't want to. And although you'll have a Facebook profile, you can also create a unique VR profile – so you might be Monique Smith on Facebook, but WarriorMama365 in VR. And if you don't want people on Oculus to find you using your Facebook name, they won't – just make your Facebook name visible to "Only Me" in your Oculus settings. You can also read more about Facebook's privacy settings here and Privacy Checkup tool here.

There's no doubt they will be harvesting whatever they can and linking it to you in real life whatever way they can. It only takes one slip up, putting in your mobile number or email in a game or the store and they have you linked to everyone you know who has a facebook account and has you in their address book. They can even get a photo of you and all sorts of info from other peoples address books.

This is turning out to be a very dangerous purchase for anyone who values their privacy, I'm convinced I can defeat it and keep the real me separate, but as I said all it takes is a little slip up and they have you and there is no going back.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,889 ✭✭✭✭mrcheez

They also said we'll never ever need to sign into Facebook to use our Oculus devices, so take what they write down with a grain of salt.

The idea is to not arouse suspicion with their bots that disable accounts automatically and then you have days (potentially weeks according to some) to wait while your account gets sorted.

I've been following reddit for a while on this subject and the accounts that get banned are ones that are newly setup, no profile pic, no friends, no activity.

Ridiculous I know, but it's a small price to pay. They can harvest all my data as much as they like and I couldn't care as the Facebook account isn't in my name.
