Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

What would people recommend for Coal for an open fire that I can pick up in Dublin? Only need a couple of bags for Jan.
Im in D3. got some delivered last year and they were hopeless.

    Update on my ovoids situation:
Bought 2 ton EG small ovoids in october. Found them to be very poor and while they gave a good blast of heat they “smothered” themselves as the day went on and left lots of ash behind the next morning.

EG apologized and sent me a sample (5 bags) of their large ovoids to try out.
They gave great heat and not much more ash than CW ovoids.

EG then sent me a ton of the large ovoids FOC , which arrived on the 23rd dec.

They didn’t ask for the small ovoids back so I’m going to mix these in with the large ones over the next few winters.
So well done to Easyglow on their quick and easy solution to the problem.
Their large ovoids are easily as good heat wise as the CW version.

    So one happy easyglow customer.
    Happy Christmas everyone.

Do you mind me asking what the large ovoids are made of? we got something similar previously and they appeared to me made of peat like a briguette and not compressed coal like the small ovoid. We didnt find them as hot as the small ovoid.

We have received a bad batch of small ovoids from a local supplier recently after being very happy with the previous supplied. Lots of Ash and burning too quick am I am looking for an alternative.

I ordered in a tonne of CW ovoids but after a good start, good heat and very little ash, I'm finding them difficult to work with!

I've a 15kw stove and it didn't matter what I put in it over the years.. from quality anthracite to dirt rubbish coal.. crack open the damper and it would burn anything and burn it well. Neither the stove or my chimney are faulty.

I'm finding the CW ovoids behave differently to other fuels. They're hard to light for one but I'm well used to that from burning anthracite in the past. The bigger issue is getting them up to a good burning level is taking an age and opening the damper bizarrely has little to no effect. They might flame a little but they don't redden or take to light as such. So it could take 2 or 3 hours, with an open damper for this stuff to get up to heat and then to make matters worse, the heat can be lacklustre. I get it that this stuff is more for smouldering than flaming but it seems to just do it's own thing.. there's no coaxing it!

Have I gotten bad bags in amongst good ones perhaps? What was the issue people had with CW ovoids in the past?
    Just seen this.
I've been burning CW ovoids for years now, same quality as before. I use some firelighters ,wood and throw on some ovoids to get it started. about 20 mins later, add more ovoids and they last ages.

What is situation with brexit and the deliveries, are the likes of easyglo still delivering to south?

What's the best coal at the minute for an open fire, preferably from easyglo or kosyking

    ^^^^^^

Only this week I had a delivery from Coal Direct Ireland in Derry and no change in price from last year.

Wake me up when it's all over.

+1 for EasyGlow Customer Service, Just had my replacement tonne of small ovoids delivered Free of Charge. The excess ash was not a major issue for me as I can spread it out down the back of the garden. Let's hope the replacement tonne is better.

The free ton they are giving out must be costing them a fair few quid in fairness

Must be but they are really easy to deal with on this. So fair play to them.

Probably worth it in the long run though. I got a replacement pallet yesterday, I haven't tried it yet but if it's good I will probably deal with them again.Very easy to deal with compared to CW.

Having now burned through the full tonne of ovoids, it seems I might just have got 2 or 3 dud bags in amongst what is otherwise very good fuel! The stuff burns well, no clinker and little ash. I had hoped the heat output might be a bit better but it served us well. I would put it on par with good quality columbian coal, only it lasts much longer. I'll definitely buy more but I'll dabble in some of the anthracites on offer from others too.

Just something to note if ordering again, there must be savage markup on this stuff as I know it can be bought from some of CW bulk resellers for much less than it can be got direct from CW!! Might be no harm haggling hard with them next time

I got the small ovoids from Easyglow. Originally I said I wasn’t going to email them about it, but I did over Christmas and Fiona emailed me back last week.

Free tone delivered this morning of the large one. Had a look at the docket and noticed it was blacked out that the last batch was a “fast burning “ coal. Found that interesting. Anyway usually between October to say March I use about 40 of the 20kg bags of coal. This year I’ve used 40 bags already of the small ovoids so that’s strange and it hasn’t even been a cold winter really.

I’ve had the large ovoids before from Easyglow and found them great so delighted to get the free tone. They also threw in 3 extra bags. Great at the time, a ****er when you are lugging them in at 8am on a cold Monday morning.

Great customer service from Fiona and Easyglow and as I said to her in the email I’ll order again in September.

I placed a multi pallet order with CW today. They are organising delivery for me too. Perhaps it's a new thing for all orders or maybe just multi pallet - I never asked.

It will save me the hassle of organising which was just an extra annoyance. Might order a 2m³ pallet of hornbeam too. Has anyone ordered one and what's the quality like?

  • Registered Users Posts: 124 ✭✭Sheedy234

How much are they charging for delivery on multi pallet. I was going to order 2 pallets ,they giving 10 off each pallet but didn't mention delivery prices.

If you ordered 5 pallets, you got €20 off each one for delivery.

Just going through the options here on the easy glow site. Could I burn the larger ovoids in my stove? It says they are for cookers, but are they not just a bigger version of the smaller ones?

Reason being, I seem to have gone through my last order in no time. Was talking with my dad, and he thinks the larger ones might burn slower. Or I'll go through th them slower.

    What yee think?

I’m using a mix of small and large EG ovoids and the big ones last longer alright .

Have got about 1/2 a ton left, it leaves so much ash that chokes out the fire that the only way to get it burning is to mix it with some decent coal, Staffords for me, and to clean out the ash tray during the day.
With decent coal i would clean out the ash tray in the morning, with this rubbish its a twice a day job, before i light the fire and once again after a few hours.
Never again will i buy from easy glow, one bitten and all that.

Well in my experience mistakes happen, I judge a company by how they handle a issue or a complaint.
Its like paying for a meal and saying awards you didn't like it.
You surely didnt burn half a ton before you knew there was an issue with it.

If you contact Fiona at easy glow they will send you another ton of normal ovoids for free including delivery, they have clearly stated there was a manufacturing issue with a previous batch and are doing their best to resolve any issues

You've nothing to lose by dropping them an e-mail. You can always ask them if they can guarantee any replacement will not be similar, if they can't well then you're free to take another tack, look for a refund etc.
I found them very easy to deal with, they knew there was a problem and they took full responsibility.

Did everyone who contacted Easyglow about the bad batch get a free replacement ton?

I only got 1/2 ton so 8m starting to feel a bit hard done by. The replacement ovoids were fine but kinda wondering why I only got a 1/2 ton of everyone else got a full replacement.

Still better than the approach Coalwarehouse took 🙄.

I was only offered free delivery as I could not send the pallet back as bags were emptied. I kicked up a bit mentioning that others on boards has got a replacement pallet and why was I was only getting free delivery. I assumed others had sent the remaining poor quality pallet back and got a new pallet but maybe that's not the case. I didn't go ahead with it but told Fiona I would get back to her in the new year when I had got rid of the bad stuff and had more space.

im thankfully coming to the end of my 1 tonne pallet I bought of these.
if you read back pre Christmas on this thread id be confident the verdict is a no buy.

    - Ash Ash Ash
    - needs too much vent because of Ash, burning quicker.
    - emptying Ash twice a day, kinda dangerous if fire hasn't gone down
    - not giving enough vent almost quenches the fire because of the ash volume

on an update to my last post before xmas, because of venting a lot more and creating excessive heat on the fire grate, i can now tell you that after 10 yrs of burning coal, it has just completely distroyed and buckled the grate. it was perfect until last Oct. So im not happy about that.
wonder has anyone else noticed this.

I wouldn't blame the coal for the grate. Thats how they go. Ten years isn't bad and when the go they can look near perfect one minute and a burnt out wreck a few weeks later. Once they hit the point of no return they just keep degrading.

Wake me up when it's all over.

I'll be honest, the way I had to burn this coal the grate didn't stand a chance.

each to their own experiences, but the coal was absolutely to blame for the way my grate went in 4 months.

Its days like that this cheap stuff really struggles , When I use a premium ovoid from my local suppliers and throw a small amount on the fire at 11 pm its still glowing at 6.30 AM , Using this Easy Glow stuff the next morning the fire is completely out. It's cheap for a reason. (BTW I got a free tonne)
