Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Monday, 6 May 2024 __ Forecasts for Ireland

TRENDS: Temperatures will average 3 to 5 deg above normal values. It will be quite dry, with rainfalls in a range of 10 to 30 per cent of normal, unless weekend rain turns heavier than currently suggested. Low cloud, sea fog, and cooler coastline temperatures will be a factor, but it will feel like summer in many parts of the country.

    FORECASTS

TODAY: Cloudy with isolated drizzle or light rain, afternoon sunny intervals will develop, quite warm except near south coast and possibly some other coastal districts, as low cloud will be stubborn to break up there; highs 16 to 18 C inland, 12 to 15 C coastal.

TONIGHT clear with fog patches developing, lows 4 to 8 C.

TUESDAY will be sunny or partly cloudy inland, with low cloud and sea fog near some coasts; warm with highs 17 to 21 C, except 13 to 16 C near coasts.

WEDNESDAY partly cloudy and quite warm, coastal cloud and fog. Some rain at times in west, spreading into Ulster later in the day. Lows 6 to 9 C, highs 17 to 21 C (12 to 15 C coastal).

THURSDAY to SATURDAY will continue settled and warm with potential for highs into low 20s inland, 15 to 18 C coastal. Nights will be mild with lows 7 to 12 C.

By SUNDAY a more unsettled trend will develop as the warm high pressure system drifts northeast, allowing rain to spread in from the southeast. This rain could become thundery and quite heavy, by early in the following week. It will likely stay rather warm despite the cloud and rain (near 18 C) and nights will be very mild (10 to 13 C).

My travel weather unfolded about as expected, we were able to fly on time as the strongest winds did not arrive in Las Vegas until late evening and overnight (when they gusted to 50 mph). It was rather turbulent flying through the cold front south of Reno, and then overcast to our destination, also cloudy all the way to home base earlier Sunday, with temperatures around 17 C. It rained in a few places and is raining here now. Apparently we missed two weeks of fairly cool and showery weather and replaced that with nearly continuous clear skies and warm temperatures, except for one cooler day with showers (Friday 26 April). Will try to post a picture or two in coming days.

Tuesday, 7 May 2024 __ Forecasts for Ireland

TRENDS: Temperatures will average 3 to 5 deg above normal values. It will be quite dry, with rainfalls in a range of 10 to 30 per cent of normal, until next Tuesday (14th) when heavier rain could begin across parts of the south. Low cloud, sea fog, and cooler coastline temperatures will be a factor, but it will feel like summer in many parts of the country.

    FORECASTS

TODAY will be sunny or partly cloudy inland, with low cloud and sea fog near some coasts; warm with highs 17 to 21 C, except 13 to 16 C near coasts.

TONIGHT partly cloudy to clear inland, cloudy near coasts, with fog patches developing, lows 6 to 9 C.

This rain could become thundery and quite heavy, by early in the following week (Monday night into Tuesday 14 May currently indicated, south at risk). It will likely stay rather warm despite the cloud and rain (near 18 C) and nights will be very mild (10 to 13 C). This prolonged warm spell could begin to transition to more seasonable conditions around the weekend of 18th-19th.

My local weather was cloudy with a few breaks, and passing showers which gave a few intervals of hail and otherwise rain, about 5 mm fell, and it was cool at 12 C. We are going into a much warmer spell later in the week, 28-31 C predicted for Friday and weekend here. Severe storms are pounding parts of Oklahoma at this late hour (near 0100 local in CDT). This is basically the same cold front I was describing in Nevada and Utah last Saturday night.

Wednesday, 8 May 2024 __ Forecasts for Ireland

TRENDS: Temperatures will average 2 to 4 deg above normal values. It will be generally quite dry until Sunday, with rainfalls in a range of 10 to 30 per cent of normal, but by next Tuesday (14th) heavier rain could develop across parts of the south. Low cloud, sea fog, and cooler coastline temperatures will be a factor, but it will feel like summer in many parts of the country.

    FORECASTS

TODAY partly cloudy and quite warm, coastal cloud and fog. Some rain at times in west, spreading into Ulster later in the day, highs 17 to 21 C (12 to 15 C coastal).

TONIGHT rain gradually ending in north, otherwise partly cloudy to clear inland, cloudy near coasts, with fog patches developing, lows 7 to 10 C.

THURSDAY hazy sunshine and cloudy intervals, warm with potential for highs into low 20s inland, 15 to 18 C coastal.

FRIDAY partly cloudy, isolated showers in western counties, lows 7 to 12 C and highs 17 to 21 C (a bit lower near coasts).

SATURDAY sunny intervals, warm, isolated showers in western counties, lows 7 to 12 C and highs 17 to 22 C.

SUNDAY increasing cloud, a few outbreaks of light rain, lows near 10 C and highs near 20 C.

By early next week, rain will gradually develop across the south and later central counties, as the warm high pressure system drifts northeast, allowing rain to spread in from the southeast. This rain could become thundery and quite heavy, by early in the following week (Monday night into Tuesday 14 May indicated, south, west-central counties at higher risk). It will likely stay rather warm despite the cloud and rain (near 18 C) and nights will be very mild (10 to 13 C). This prolonged warm spell could begin to transition to more seasonable conditions around the weekend of 18th-19th.

My local weather on Tuesday was partly cloudy, still rather cool, highs near 11 C. We're looking forward to a warmer spell developing from today into next weekend (27 to 30 C predicted eventually, but 17-19 C later today).

My local weather on Friday was sunny and very warm, with a high of about 29 C. We saw a modified version of the grand auroral display that was reported in Ireland and Britain, sky generally covered with rays and sheets but without as much colour as reported further east. I will give it another look after posting this. (later look was considerably improved, just about similar to earlier reports but I didn't see any purple or bright pink colours, just green and red rays, but very good structure developed around midnight, would say almost equal to 1989).

Sunday, 12 May 2024 __ Forecasts for Ireland

TRENDS: Temperatures will average 0.5 to 1.5 deg above normal values. Rainfalls will be close to average but could be heavier in a few parts of the south. Low cloud, sea fog, and cooler coastline temperatures will continue to be a factor, but there will also be a few brighter intervals. A more settled but partly cloudy to overcast interval will develop later in the week.

    FORECASTS

TODAY increasing cloud, a few outbreaks of light to moderate rain, isolated thunderstorms, but also a few brighter spells and highs 17 to 20 C.

TONIGHT overcast with occasional rain in south, showers further north, foggy near coasts, lows 10 to 13 C.

MONDAY outbreaks of heavy rain in south, spreading north but beco ing showery, a few brighter intervals following in the afternoon across parts of south; highs 17 to 20 C.

TUESDAY cooler with frequent showers and some isolated thunderstorms, lows 9 to 11 C and highs 15 to 18 C.

WEDNESDAY will also be unsettled but with more isolated showery rainfall, lows near 7 C and highs near 17 C.

My local weather on Saturday was sunny and very warm, highs near 27 C. Not very optimistic about seeing aurora borealis tonight but will take a quick look soon.

Monday, 13 May 2024 __ Forecasts for Ireland

TRENDS: Temperatures will average 0.5 to 1.5 deg above normal values. Rainfalls will be close to average but could be heavier in a few parts of the south. Low cloud, sea fog, and cooler coastline temperatures will continue to be a factor, but there will also be a few brighter intervals. A more settled but partly cloudy to overcast interval will develop later in the week.

    FORECASTS

TODAY outbreaks of heavy rain in south, up to 30 mm possible around Cork, rain spreading north but becoming showery and amounts of only 5 to 10 mm expected, a few brighter intervals following in the afternoon across parts of south; highs 16 to 19 C.

TONIGHT overcast with occasional rain redeveloping after midnight in south, occasional showers further north, foggy in places especially inland central and north, and near coasts, lows 10 to 13 C.

TUESDAY cooler with frequent showers and some isolated thunderstorms, highs 15 to 18 C (could be only 13-14 C south). Winds easterly 30-50 km/hr.

WEDNESDAY will also be unsettled but with more isolated showery rainfall, lows near 7 C and highs near 17 C except closer to 15 C east coast. Light northeast winds likely.

THURSDAY variable cloud, a few showers by afternoon, winds east to northeast 30-50 km/hr. Lows near 7 C and highs about 14 to 16 C east, 16 to 18 west.

FRIDAY into WEEKEND cloudy with a few breaks, isolated showers, rather warm (17-20 C) especially away from east coast where an onshore flow could keep readings closer to 14-15 C.

Little change is foreseen in this easterly flow of mild but not remarkably warm air, nights will be mild (7 to 11 C) and this will be the main reason for a positive temperature anomaly as highs will be generally below 20 C. Although long-range forecasts are generally dry after today's downpours and Tuesday's scattered showers, it would not take large changes to produce brief heavy rainfalls in this sort of pattern, and would not expect very good accuracy on timing these however, as weak energy could be enough to trigger locally heavy showers at any point. It won't be cloudy all the time but there probably won't be as much sunshine as was enjoyed on Friday and Saturday.

My local weather on Sunday was again sunny and very warm, highs near 27 C. Cloud from a weak cold front spread in after 5 p.m. but so far rain is evaporating before reaching ground (virga) around the region. Expecting a bit cooler on Monday (around 21 C) with a few showers possible.

Tuesday, 14 May 2024 __ Forecasts for Ireland

TRENDS: Temperatures will average 0.5 to 1.5 deg above normal values. Further rainfalls will be about half of average but could be heavier in a few parts of the south. Low cloud, sea fog, and cooler coastline temperatures will continue to be a factor, but there will also be a few brighter intervals. A more settled but partly cloudy to overcast interval will develop later in the week.

    FORECASTS

TODAY cooler with frequent showers and some isolated thunderstorms (mostly inland south), occasional showers further north, highs 15 to 18 C (could be only 13-14 C south). Winds easterly 30-50 km/hr.

TONIGHT overcast to partly cloudy, occasional rain or drizzle, lows 7 to 9 C.

FRIDAY into WEEKEND cloudy with a few breaks, isolated showers becoming quite infrequent by Sunday, rather warm (17-20 C) especially away from east coast where an onshore flow of east-northeast breezes 30-50 km/hr could keep readings closer to 14-15 C.

Little change is foreseen in this easterly flow of mild but not remarkably warm air, nights will be mild (7 to 11 C) and this will be the main reason for a positive temperature anomaly as highs will be generally below 20 C. Although long-range forecasts are generally dry after scattered showers to about Friday (until around late next week), it would not take large changes to produce brief heavy rainfalls in this sort of pattern, and would not expect very good accuracy on timing these however, as weak energy could be enough to trigger locally heavy showers at any point.

My local weather on Monday was partly cloudy to overcast with a few showers by afternoon, cooler with a high of about 20 C.

Wednesday, 15 May 2024 __ Forecasts for Ireland

TRENDS: Temperatures will average 0.5 to 1.5 deg above normal values. Further rainfalls will be about one-third of average but could be heavier in a few parts of the south. Low cloud, sea fog, and cooler coastline temperatures will continue to be a factor, but there will also be a few brighter intervals. A more settled but partly cloudy to overcast interval will develop later in the week lasting to about Tuesday 21st.

    FORECASTS

TODAY will be unsettled but with more isolated showery rainfall and chance of a thunderstorm inland west, highs near 17 C except closer to 15 C east coast. Light northeast winds likely.

TONIGHT overcast to partly cloudy, occasional rain or drizzle, lows 7 to 9 C.

THURSDAY variable cloud, a few showers by afternoon, winds east to northeast 30-50 km/hr. Lows near 7 C and highs about 14 to 16 C east, 16 to 18 west.

FRIDAY little change, variable cloud and a few showers, lows near 7 C and highs 15 to 18 C.

WEEKEND partly cloudy with a few sunny breaks, perhaps more frequent by Sunday, as isolated showers become quite infrequent, rather warm (17-20 C) especially away from east coast where an onshore flow of east-northeast breezes 30-50 km/hr could keep readings closer to 14-15 C. Monday and Tuesday could prolong this dry interval and produce better sunshine totals too; highs near 20 C away from cooler coasts.

It will likely turn more unsettled later next week but details are not very reliable in this blocked pattern. There are indications that the low pressure currently off to the southeast could redevelop after weakening during the dry interval indicated, so a reload of current conditions is quite possible.

My local weather on Tuesday was sunny with a few clouds and the high was a pleasant 24 C. Trees are now fully in leaf at our elevation (this happened weeks ago lower down), however, there is still snow on the ground in forested areas between here and alpine areas northwest of town, which is an odd contrast to spring vegetation already leafing out there as well.

Low cloud, sea fog, and cooler coastline temperatures will be a factor, but there will also be brighter intervals.

    FORECASTS

SUNDAY sunny with cloudy intervals, warm, and highs near 20 C (cooler near coasts). Isolated showers could include one or two locally heavy thunderstorms in southeast.

TONIGHT partly cloudy, fog patches, lows 7to 10 C.

MONDAY increasing cloud, showers by afternoon in western counties, and highs near 19 C.

TUESDAY variable cloud, a few showers, lows near 10 C and highs near 17 C.

Further outbreaks of rain, heavy at times, towards weekend of 25-26 and into last week of month.

My local weather on Saturday was unseasonably cool with a cold rain occasionally mixing with soft hail. Temperatures were between 5 and 10 C depending on intensity of the wintry-looking precip. Bears are out of hibernation but could be regretting that. This is about as cold as it can be around here this late into spring. Snow was falling in nearby alpine areas.

Monday, 20 May 2024 __ Forecasts for Ireland

TRENDS: Temperatures will average near to 1.0 deg above normal values, but quite warm today. Rainfalls will range from isolated to widespread on various days, but most locations will see less than two-thirds of average totals. Low cloud, sea fog, and cooler coastline temperatures will be a factor, but there will also be brighter intervals.

    FORECASTS

TODAY sunny intervals with increasing cloud, showers by afternoon in western counties, an isolated heavy thundershower possible, and highs 19 to 23 C.

TONIGHT partly cloudy to overcast, fog patches, isolated showers, lows 10 to 13 C.

TUESDAY variable cloud, a few showers, lows near 10 C and highs near 17 C.

WEDNESDAY a few outbreaks of rain heavier in east and north, lows near 9 C and highs near 17 C.

THURSDAY will see cloudy skies at first and occasional rain, possibly heavy from early overnight into Thursday morning, but gradual clearing by later morning into afternoon, lows near 10 C and highs near 21 C.

FRIDAY outlook uncertain, some guidance suggests a dry day with some sun, otherwise some rain will be confined to south and west, highs at least 17 to 21 C but possibly warmer if more sun.

Further outbreaks of rain, heavy at times, towards weekend of 25th-26th and variable into last week of month, dry days could return for a short spell but eventually a rather wet pattern will develop near first weekend of June.

My local weather on Sunday was still quite cool with a few showers of rain occasionally mixing with soft hail. Temperatures were slightly better at 12 to 15 C. It has cleared up recently and there's a risk of a frost in low lying areas.

FRIDAY outlook uncertain, some guidance suggests a dry day with some sun, otherwise some rain will be confined to south and west, lows near 7 C and highs at least 17 to 21 C but possibly warmer if more sun. (split in potential guidance unchanged so far)

SATURDAY will be cloudy with rain for part of the day, partial clearing by afternoon in south and west, lows near 10 C and highs near 18 C.

SUNDAY will be partly cloudy with any further showers isolated, lows near 8 C and highs near 19 C.

Variable conditions into last week of month, dry days could return for a short spell but eventually a rather wet pattern will develop near first weekend of June.

My local weather on Monday was partly cloudy with showers around, and highs near 17 C.

Wednesday, 22 May 2024 __ Forecasts for Ireland

TRENDS: Temperatures will average near normal values. Rainfalls will range from isolated to widespread on various days, but most locations will see less than two-thirds of average totals. Low cloud, sea fog, and cooler coastline temperatures will be a factor, but there will also be brighter intervals.

    FORECASTS

TODAY a few outbreaks of rain, generally brief and under 2 mm in total, cool north to northwest breezes 40 to 60 km/hr, and highs 15 to 17 C.

TONIGHT rain at times in north Leinster and Ulster, generally dry elsewhere, lows 7 to 9 C.

THURSDAY will see cloudy skies at first and occasional rain in northeast, possibly heavy from early overnight into Thursday morning, but gradual clearing by later morning into afternoon, highs 15 to 17 C, but potential for 19 to 21 C where sunny, noting it will likely stay cloudy in parts of Ulster and north Leinster after rain ends.

FRIDAY generally dry, light winds, highs dependent on any sunshine, with rather cloudy skies likely, but a few breaks possible. Lows near 7 C, highs 15 to 19 C.

SATURDAY will be cloudy with rain for part of the day, partial clearing by afternoon in south and west, lows near 10 C and highs near 18 C.

SUNDAY will be partly cloudy with a few further showers, lows near 8 C and highs near 19 C.

Variable conditions into last week of month, dry days could return for a short spell but eventually a rather wet pattern will develop before the end of the week and into the first weekend of June.

My local weather on Tuesday was cloudy with occasional light rain and highs near 17 C. There have been frequent severe thunderstorms across central regions of the U.S., while eastern regions have been dry and pleasantly warm.

Thursday, 23 May, 2024 __ Forecasts for Ireland

TRENDS: Temperatures will average near normal values. Rainfalls will range from isolated to widespread on various days, and eventually most locations will see near average totals as rain will tend to be heavier next week. It will be rather cloudy, but there will also be brighter intervals.

    FORECASTS

TODAY will see cloudy skies at first and occasional rain in northeast, possibly heavy in east Ulster (Carlisle in n.w. England received 85 mm in past 24 hours, but just 10-20 mm is more likely in Anrtim and Down, 2 to 5 in rest of Ulster and a few parts of n Leinster). Rain is generally moving north into western Scotland, and for most of Ireland, gradual clearing will develop by later morning into afternoon, highs 15 to 17 C, but potential for 19 to 21 C inland where sunny, noting it will likely stay cloudy in parts of Ulster and north Leinster even after rain ends.

TONIGHT will be partly cloudy with a few clear intervals, lows 6 to 9 C.

FRIDAY generally dry, light winds, highs dependent on any sunshine, with rather cloudy skies likely, but a few breaks possible, highs 13 to 18 C.

SATURDAY will be cloudy with rain for part of the day, partial clearing by afternoon in south and west, lows near 10 C and highs 14 to 18 C.

SUNDAY will be partly cloudy with a few showers, lows near 8 C and highs 16 to 19 C.

Variable and often unsettled conditions will continue into last week of month, dry intervals could be part of the picture too, as frontal systems pass at regular intervals; rain could be rather heavy by Tuesday into Wednesday and again into the first weekend of June.

My local weather on Wednesday was overcast with a little rain but generally dry, near 15 C.

Friday, 24 May, 2024 ___ Forecasts for Ireland

TRENDS: Temperatures will average near normal values, rather cool at first, then somewhat warmer later. Rainfalls will add up to near average totals to about 25% above average, as rain will tend to be heavier next week. It will be rather cloudy, but there will also be brighter intervals.

    FORECASTS

TODAY generally dry, light winds, highs dependent on any sunshine, with rather cloudy skies likely, but a few breaks possible, highs 13 to 18 C. Guidance indicates parts of south Leinster could remain unusually cool all day with local low cloud and drizzle, readings could be only near 10 C if that persists (but any clearing would allow 13-15 C readings). Best of any sunshine likely to be inland southwest and west.

TONIGHT will be cloudy with a few clear intervals in east and north with lows 6 to 9 C, rain developing towards dawn in south and west, lows 10 to 12 C .

SATURDAY will be cloudy with 10 to 25 mm rain expected for first part of the day in west, towards early afternoon in east and north, with partial clearing by later afternoon or evening in south and west, lows near 10 C and highs 14 to 18 C.

SUNDAY will be partly cloudy with a few showers and isolated thunderstorms, lows near 8 C and highs 16 to 19 C.

MONDAY partly cloudy to overcast, showers, lows near 10 C and highs near 18 C.

TUESDAY overcast with occasional rain, humid, lows near 12 C and highs near 19 C.

Partly cloudy and warmer with a few showers still in the picture later in the week, highs could briefly reach 21 C; rain could be rather heavy by Tuesday into early Wednesday but latest guidance looks a bit improved towards weekend of 1-2 June, partly cloudy with passing showers, highs near 20 C.

My local weather on Thursday was overcast with a few breaks, and thunderstorms in the area (heaviest about ten kms east over Trail, BC), highs near 17 C.

Saturday, 25 May, 2024 ___ Forecasts for Ireland

TRENDS: Temperatures will average near normal values, rather cool at first, then somewhat warmer later. Rainfalls will add up to near average totals to about 25% above average, as rain will tend to be heavier next week. It will be rather cloudy, but there will also be brighter intervals.

    FORECASTS

TODAY will be cloudy with 10 to 25 mm rain expected for first part of the day in west, and while partly sunny at first, rain will arrive towards early afternoon in the east and north. Some partial clearing could develop by later afternoon or evening in south and west, lows near 10 C and highs 14 to 18 C.

TONIGHT a few more showers but also dry intervals, lows near 10 C.SUNDAY will be partly cloudy with a few showers and isolated thunderstorms, lows near 8 C and highs 16 to 19 C.

MONDAY partly cloudy to overcast, showers, lows near 10 C and highs near 18 C.

TUESDAY overcast with occasional rain, humid, lows near 12 C and highs near 19 C. Rain heavy at times in parts of west and central counties (potential for 15-25 mm).

WEDNESDAY showers will gradually clear as winds veer towards west-northwest after passage of a cold front, temperatures steady in range of 14 to 17 C.

THURSDAY and FRIDAY partly cloudy, warmer, isolated showers, lows near 10 C and highs near 21 C. Variable conditions will continue with occasional showery intervals but overall it looks a bit drier for early June as high pressure will build up just to the west. This does pose a risk of an interval of cooler northerly flow but that often ends up being more of an issue for eastern England and the North Sea region closer to the time.

Summer outlook, not particularly confident about trends but thinking it will be a bit of a mixed bag of cool spells and brief hotter intervals, with quite variable rainfalls, not settling into established trends but variable from week to week and perhaps even place to place to some extent. Reason for this is basically a generally weak steering flow environment, warmer than average sea surface temperatures likely to leave a mark in terms of cloudy skies a bit more frequently than optimal, but overall, a mixed bag with a bit of everything. I do see some potential for one severe heat wave developing and in the prime portion of summer (late July into early August, whether it fully extends into Ireland or stays off to east and southeast being the question, but some parts of Europe will almost certainly have some severe heat waves. It rather looks similar in N America also, trends are not very distinct other than a persistent tendency to severe storm development where it usually happens at this time of year, central states, but quite amplified in 2024. My local weather on Friday was overcast with a few raindrops from time to time. Cloud bases were very low, in our rolling terrain there are places where you can actually look down on cumulus clouds rolling through valleys, and that was the case up the road from here earlier. It was a bit warmer at 19 C.

    FORECASTS:

TODAY will become partly cloudy with some heavy showers possible by afternoon, highs 16 to 18 C.

TONIGHT variable cloud, a few showers but clearing towards dawn. Lows near 7 C.

WEDNESDAY will be partly cloudy and a little cooler, a few brief showers, lows near 7 C and highs near 15 C.

Wednesday, 29 May, 2024 ___ Forecasts for Ireland

TRENDS: After some light rain today into Thursday morning, a prolonged dry spell is likely, with generous amounts of sunshine developing, and temperatures slowly increasing to 2-3 deg above normal.

    FORECASTS

TODAY will be partly cloudy with some outbreaks of light rain spreading east, cool with highs 14 to 17 C.

TONIGHT will be partly cloudy to overcast with rain at times in north, lows 5 to 8 C.

THURSDAY will be partly cloudy with showers ending, more frequent sunny spells by afternoon, highs 15 to 18 C.

FRIDAY will be mostly sunny with lows near 5 C and highs near 19 C.

SATURDAY and SUNDAY will continue sunny with occasional patchy high cloud, chilly at night but warm during days, lows 4 to 7 C and highs 18 to 21 C.

Next week could turn even warmer and nights will not be quite as cool either, but in light and variable, mostly easterly breezes, some coastal areas notably in Leinster could remain a bit cooler; otherwise highs could be into 22-25 C range. Any northerly flow ending this spell is now indicated to be confined to regions from North Sea eastward at times next week, and more generally over Ireland not until around weekend of 8-9 June or into following week.

My local weather on Tuesday was mostly cloudy but dry and warm, apart from one very brief shower, and a high near 23 C.

Thursday, 30 May, 2024 __ Forecasts for Ireland

TRENDS: After some light rain today, a prolonged dry spell is likely, with generous amounts of sunshine developing, and temperatures near average for most of next week. Some minor troughs could provide occasional cloud but little if any rain, but forecasts see to be a little "in flux" so the dry spell's actual duration is not really settled yet.

    FORECASTS

TODAY will be partly cloudy with a few showers drifting southeast, ending with more frequent sunny spells by afternoon, highs 15 to 18 C.

TONIGHT will be partly cloudy to clear, lows 4 to 7 C.

FRIDAY will be mostly sunny with highs near 19 C.

SATURDAY and SUNDAY will continue sunny with occasional patchy high cloud, chilly at night but warm during days, lows 4 to 7 C and highs 18 to 21 C. Some cloud may drift into northern counties at times, with patchy coastal drizzle but little of this will reach the rest of the country. It may reduce temperatures to 15-17 C in a few areas of the north.

The latest guidance for next week holds temperatures around 19 or 20 C, and a weak northwesterly flow could move into some northern counties mid-week before retreating, so in general it will remain dry and partly cloudy to sunny in most if not all areas. There are now suggestions of some moisture edging in from the south around weekend of 8-9 June. Once again, this may not have widespread effects but needs to be watched.

My local weather on Wednesday was partly cloudy and cool with a few showers around, but mostly dry, breezy (n.w. 40-60) with highs near 15 C.

Friday, 31 May, 2024 ___ Forecasts for Ireland

TRENDS: A dry spell is likely across south and central counties, lasting most of the interval, but some rain will fall around Tuesday in the north, with 10-15 mm possible there. At first, generous amounts of sunshine will appear, with an increase in cloud during the week, but continued partly cloudy intervals in the south combined with a good start should result in at least 50% above average sunshine, trending to near average in north. Temperatures will remain near average for most of the interval into next week but it could be rather chilly in some northern counties due to cloud holding down daytime readings. The best weather overall will be near the south coast and latest indications tend to downplay any coastal cooling from either sea breezes or coastal cloud or fog.

    FORECASTS

TODAY will be mostly sunny with highs near 19 C, light winds could be variable in direction but generally northwesterly.

TONIGHT will be partly cloudy to clear and calm, lows 4 to 7 C. Some cloud at times in north.

The latest guidance for next week continues to hold temperatures around 19 or 20 C south, and 15 to 17 C north. A weak northwesterly flow will likely move into some northern counties around Tuesday to Thursday which is when any rain in that region is most likely, further south it will remain mostly dry and partly cloudy in most central and southern counties.

A relatively dry and pleasant pattern is now being indicated for weekend June 8-9 also, persisting into following week before any resumption of more disturbed frontal weather systems; highs of 20 to 23 C will be possible.

My local weather on Thursday was partly cloudy to overcast and cool with passing showers and highs of only 14 C.

Saturday, 1 June, 2024 __ Forecasts for Ireland

TRENDS: dry with near average early June temperatures, cloudy in north at times, at least normal sunshine further south and a few places likely to exceed that.

    FORECASTS

TODAY will be sunny with increasing cloud in some northern counties, highs near 20 C inland south, 18 C central, 14 to 16 C in north.

TONIGHT will be clear to partly cloudy, cool, lows 5 to 9 C.

SUNDAY will see further increases in cloud but some sunshine could remain in place near south coast, isolated and patchy drizzle could accompany northern coastal cloud. Highs 15 to 19 C.

MONDAY cloudy with sunny intervals, patchy drizzle in north. Lows 8 to 10 C and highs 15 to 19 C.

TUESDAY showers will develop along a fairly weak cold front but these will die off towards southern counties and west Munster could remain dry. Variable cloud with some sun at times, lows near 10 C and highs near 15 C north, 18 C south.

WEDNESDAY to FRIDAY, partly cloudy and generally dry, although isolated brief showers in some northern counties. Lows near 11 C and highs near 18 C.

Towards next weekend and possibly into next week (10-14 June), sunny intervals and warmer again, highs into low 20s inland.

My local weather on Friday turned quite pleasant and mostly sunny by afternoon after a rather cloudy morning, highs close to 19 C.

(worth noting this thread has been going for 15 years now!)

Sunday, 2 June, 2024 __ Forecasts for Ireland

TRENDS … Rather dry across the south, but near average rainfall (Tuesday to Thursday will bring most of it) across the north; about half of average in central counties (same timing). Temperatures will fall 2 to 3 deg below normal by Tuesday and will only recover slowly by about a week from today. Sunshine will become less frequent and it will be quite cloudy in northern counties.

    FORECASTS

TODAY will be sunny with increasing cloud from north into central counties by afternoon. Some spotty drizzle could accompany cloud near northwest coasts. Highs will range from 19 or 20 C in south to 17 C central and 14 C north.

TONIGHT will be partly cloudy to overcast, lows 7 to 10 C.

MONDAY will be cloudy with a few sunny breaks in southern and central counties, with drizzle possible in parts of the north, highs 14 to 17 C.

TUESDAY will become breezy (west-northwest 50-70 km/hr), cool with showers or intervals of rain. These will bring 10-15 mm of rain to north, about 5 mm in central counties, but only trace amounts to 2 mm in south. Highs 13 to 16 C, coolest in Ulster.

WEDNESDAY will be partly cloudy to overcast and cool, with a few outbreaks of light rain, lows 7 to 10 C, highs 13 to 16 C.

THURSDAY will continue cloudy with a few showers and cool, lows near 7 C and highs near 15 C.

FRIDAY and SATURDAY will continue partly cloudy and cool in a northerly breeze, lows 5 to 7 C and highs 13 to 16 C. It could be a touch warmer in parts of the south.

By SUNDAY of next weekend, a sunny and warmer interval will develop, and could persist for about three days, but eventually a cool and unsettled regime will replace that.

My local weather on Saturday was cloudy with occasional light rain and a high of about 15 C.
