Galway could not get out of division 1B. They beat Offaly but who didn't beat Offaly. They beat Kilkenny & Davey's Boys both of whom were playing their 3d game in as many weeks when fatigue had most certainly set in for both. Some yardstick for elevating them to the status of Gods of Hurling.I think such a foundation for so elevated a status is fair weak will not survive the coming storms.

i think there was a few changes to that team above.Dont think darren mullen played.Great to see tommy walsh back.
Wheres tadgh o dwyer is he injured?its dissapointing andy gaffney hasnt kicked on after being a promising minor. Will adrian mullen make the cut after the leaving cert?
leahy, donnelly, sheehan and mossy will probably link up with the u21s after this weekend it'll be a tough match against galway.

It's nice to read something actually approaching discussion for a change and not just received wisdom cliché. There is a tendency some people to predict that any team that gets on top at all will dominate for years. Only time will tell.

In Galway's favour, Kilkenny are not great (as far as I can assess though some here seem to think they can beat anyone), Tipperary are in decline and probably will exit, Cork have no defence though they have a speedy enough game a bit different to the type of physical game Galway like. It is set up for Galway to have a few good years if they are the team some people claim. They are a mature team but young enough to be around for a few years if they win it this year. But they have been elevated fairly early alright. Leinster Final v Kilkenny (as I expect) will be the most fascinating game for some time. How will a fresher Kilkenny team which has not played three weeks in a row do having learned some lessons for their first game?

Sounds like a good idea, play it in a difference Province each year with the Finances going to the relevant Provincial Council.

So what happens if the Munster team loses but the joe mcdonagh winners are from Leinster?
Only fair way is to scrap the provinces and make it open draw but delegates will never vote for it

The Munster Hurling Final is the most important event in the GAA calendar after the All Ireland Hurling final attracting Hurling Fans from all over the country many of whom have no chance of getting tickets for the All Ireland Final.

Scrapping the provinces because there's a bit of a problem with promotion/relegation would be fairly over the top. The championship will probably end up with two groups anyway and the provinces automatically provide this.

Except the bit of the problem is a big discrepancy. A championship shouldn't be played where theres different rules for one than the other.
The conditions for Kerry to be promoted are very different to the other teams they're competing against for no other reasons than geographical.
Every team should be playing to the same rules, only way this can happen is to do it open draw

Since when is it necessary that "every team should be playing to the same rules"? Different rules have existed in different provinces for decades. Even in recent years the Leinster hurling finalists have gotten a bye into the provincial semi-finals - Tipperary were Munster champions in 2015/16 and had to play in the quarter-final in the following year and play an extra game. Why was nobody concerned about different rules then?

Anyway leaving short and selective memories aside, if every team should be playing to the same rules then why not just take the simplest option and change the rules? Why the need for a big drama which changes the entire format of the championship just because of one county?

Isn't that the point?? Different rules have existed in the provincial championships and I find it impossible to think of a scenario where a fair championship with same rules can be applied under the provincial system. So therefore if we want a fully fair system for all counties then only system that could work is an open draw.
What is your simplest option to change the rules?
By the way on your point about Leinster champions getting a bye into semi final, Cody has previously said he disagrees with it and believes the Leinster champions should be in the draw at same time as rest of the counties.

The simplest option to change the rules would be for Leinster to do what they should have done at the time and insist that the same play-off rule applied to Leinster as to Munster. Whether someone agrees with the play-off or not is another matter but it's far easier to tweak the rules than to try to being about a monumental and likely to be resisted shift by obliterating the provincial championships. Put a motion to congress or whatever.

Richie from the start. Maybe Colin.

Id also be suprised if that team starts but you wouldnt know.I would of thought maybe leahy and colin would of started but with the same team announced as the last day he either wants a big performance from the same group or is just playing mind games.Either way the bench looks strong but we seen the last day colin made no impression.
its good to see cleere and aylward making the squad hopefully kevin kelly will be back soon.

Cant see that team starting as the bench looks stronger IMO

Kilkenny teams started well in the Féile

Boro 2 from 2. They're a serious outfit and should go close.
Emeralds with a win and a draw.
    Graignamanagh 2 from 2.

I think last year v wexford our bench was not strong. Hence Cody isn't going to have the same problem this year.
I was surprised Blanchfield regained his place. I think this maybe the 4th time only Cody has named the same team to start consecutive championship matches. Its certainly in the single figures.

i was reading somewhere that we've only scored ten points from play in our first 3 championship matches which is a very poor return.Whatever six fowards take to the field this evening we need the fowards to make an impression and trouble the scoreboard. We know how wexford will set up we've had a week off and we're at home we cant have any excuses tonight.Best of luck to players and management tonight should be a good atmosphere.

    Not sure about that stat...

    From play:
    vs Galway: 1-2
    vs Offaly: 2-14
    vs Dublin: 1-10

maybe it was apart from tj we've only scored something like ten points from play.sorry for getting my wires crossed but needless to say we need a big game from our attckers tonight.

It might be related to scores in the first half or something. Anyway, as you said, we need a big game from our attackers tonight. We do need to score more from play.

Boro through to the File semi final tomorrow at 1pm

They had their tightest game yet against Clarinbridge winning out 1-7 to 1-4

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,902 ✭✭✭✭Realt Dearg Sec

The other side of that is he's picking the starting six based on their CURRENT form, which is also awful. The performance by the forwards the last day was among the worst I've seen from a Kilkenny team in the Cody era. I agree that fennelly was bad coming in but if they don't come out all guns blazing to prove that they aren't the team that we saw the last day, then I'll be extremely pessimistic for the future.

But I have a good feeling they'll be playing with a bit of fire in the belly. I fully expect to see Hogan get a run alright. No idea what to make of Leahy, gone right off the boil. This isn't a do or die match, but it's one where a lot of lads should have a point to prove. If they don't play accordingly it'll be an important match for the wrong reason.

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,704 ✭✭✭citykat

Given the lack of training between games, its difficult for lads on the bench to stake a claim for a starting spot. One of the downsides to this format.
