Went down on Saturday evening to see Nick Cave. No issues getting in, a bit of a trek from the car park alright but shur what can you do.

There was a lovely atmosphere around the place. Saw a few bits and pieces, Sorcha Richardson was great, caught ten mins of Neil Delamare, and the Singalong Social was great craic. The New Brass Kings were good fun too.

Nick Cave though - I still can't find the words to describe how amazing it was. I was right near the front - the intensity from him was something else. "He's f**king terrifying" a woman next to me said. Hard to disagree. 64 years of age and to have that level of energy and intensity. They hadn't played for three weeks prior which probably helped. So many highlights from the set, among them From Her to Eternity, Bright Horses, the heart breaking I Need You, Jubilee Street - and Warren hogging the limelight for a bit :D In fact I could have listed every song as a highlight, it was a terrific setlist. It was probably the best live performance I've ever seen. Stunning.

What a weekend! Highlights for me were CMAT, Gilla Band, Rival Consoles, Christian Loffler, King Gizzard and Underworld. Honey Dijon and DJ Koze were unbelievable as well for a boogie later in the night and that was possibly the best Sing Along Social I've ever been to. Definitely agree that food prices were a bit crazy, husband spent 19euro one of those Beyond burgers and chips at one point! Berlin Kebab up near the Ferris Wheel was a big hit though. Think I preferred the 360 approach to Arcadia in 2019. Was raging Sherelle didn't make it but these things happen. Loved the app over the weekend, found it great for the notifications etc.

Sunday night I'd got back to the tent about half three and I could hear it in the distance but maybe some of you were there, what stage/who the hell was playing Madonna and Justin Timberlake 4 minutes?? Why finish up the whole festival with that 😂

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,354 ✭✭✭Dreamweapon

Yeah, take it to Current Affairs. Music, dancing, craic and giving out about food prices here only please 😁

Big on the all mouth and trousers scene

Yeah I paid 14 quid for the worst burrito I’ve ever had in my life :/ my own fault for not having lunch before I set off and saying to myself “I’ll get something down there”

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,137 ✭✭✭endainoz

The dumplings places was really nice, but yes all food was pretty pricey.

  • Registered Users Posts: 128 ✭✭Spreece

Yeah, pretty sure they were. I was near the front and they had the smoke machine running strong but from what I could see they weren’t even lip synching that well.

of course I could be wrong but that’s what I thought.

At the risk of coming across as the most sensible anorak ever - expect price gouging and prepare accordingly. I spent a grand total of €44 at the festival - and that included Thursday, and a breakfast at Pitt Bros on Saturday morning! 😄 Just bring down some grub with you, and limit your custom to the best of the food trucks – it’ll help raise all boats and curtail silly pricing. Though I imagine the festival overhead for the retailers is pretty onerous.

According to a review in the examiner, the capacity was 35,000.

    https://www.irishexaminer.com/lifestyle/artsandculture/arid-40930871.html

Is that accurate?! I thought capacity was circa 22k and it certainly felt smaller than 35k

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,188 ✭✭✭Fanirish

It was 22k plus 2,000 performers, guests, staff etc as per Waterford planning application

I had a great weekend, maybe seen less than I should've as I was weekend volunteering, but had a very pleasant time. Found getting around gruelling sometimes, the walk from main campsite to arena, when you hit the arena its like a straight curving hill before you get by the yellow and black tent (Looks like it was related to the Terminus tent from EP but smaller).

Highlights: Because I was working from 2 - 10 pm on Friday didn't catch much acts but did catch a bit of the Gilla Band who were brilliant and totally nutty, their music reminded me of the bee buzzing guitars of Sonic Youth's Death Valley 69 period. a caught a few other things on Friday but will have to check timetable when I properly scribe for my review. Nick Cave was splendid as per usual, more than music a true artist, Groove Armada I enjoyed but felt their set was short and too much attention on new material rather than concentrating on some of their classics.

My mate found Cave a bit too croony at times and I went with him at some point to the big tent and caught Floating Points who was superb. Denise Chalia put on a great set on the Sunday and caught a bit of King Gizzard... who were rather excellent, Murder Capital lively enough and Underworld who were excellent as usual. Some of the Monday early hours spent at Arcadia and the small tent which had some exceptional techno banging. A great weekend.

Edit: Jaysus forgot to mention I met Rubick and his other half Desk Tidy on the Sunday at the info point I was working at in the main arena, so it was good to meet them.

Absolutely savage weekend..nailed it organisation wise. Traffic management almost felt like overkill given how so many people arriving early spread the load throughout the day.

Highlights Gizz, cave, rival consoles i'd a great spot for GA and loved every bit of it. Ping pong disco was great craic all weekend and hope that crew are involved again.

Critiques very small ones.. once again the look and visuals of the AVA stage was greatly oversold..It was cool with the sphere lights etc. but no algorithym projections etc.

    Food was limited and pricey

Diageos stamp on the place was noticeable but not overboard and hopefully it doesn't get worse if this festival grows bigger. But free flow booze I suppose it does feel less forced on you

It remains an awful shame there isn't more by the house especially at night.

The bug was way better and not as much a downgrade than I was expecting. But afterburner or spider for next year thanks :D

There needs to be more variety after midnight, it's all electronic and DJ sets which is fine but even the most keen of us needs a break.

A year with soft ground and that carpark will cause serious problems

The sound even for a tent in the SKOW tent was poor.

On a far less serious not..We all need to dress up more, I'm in my late thirty's and at fault for this as much as any but I think we need to put an effort in to distract ourselves from how old generally the demographic is.

But all in all an amazing weekend.

    Highlights:

    Enola Gay

    Jinx Lennon

    DOD at the Bandstand

    Mary Wallopers

    Sing Along Social

    New Jackson

    Rival Consoles

    Acid Granny

    Ping Pong Disco in general

    Strange Boy

    Christian Löffler

King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard

    Didn’t meet my expectations:

Floating Points (could have been me)

Underworld (could have been me - preferred 2018 performance)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 716 ✭✭✭dingbat

One of the most well organised festivals I've been to. Stuff just worked. No hassle getting in the way of a good weekend. Also in general you could just feel it was a really, really good vibe overall - the sense of folks being long overdue a proper festival and determined to just be happy and sound.

Food was pricey but when you consider how much extra basics are in your local supermarket and the extra cost of fuel at the moment it's fair enough.

Bars were reasonable and queues were light enough.

    In no particular order...

    CMAT is a star.

    Underworld was intensity itself.

Claire Beck in the Schweppes tent on Sunday was the afternoon festival recovery bop I've missed so much.

Denise Chaila needs to stop with the chat between every bloody song. The self-indulgent cringe sucks the energy out of the place. Pity because the music is good fun.

Heidi was brilliant on Friday night at Arcadia.

Flight Facilities was great - just an honest to goodness Saturday night DJ set.

Floating Points really didn't hit the mark for me.

Jungle need to be informed to turn up the bass.

Big shout out to Jess Kavanagh who was an absolute superstar singing Prince & Kate Bush with Glasshouse.

    "Diageos stamp on the place...."

Are you sure Diageo paid for all the Rockshore promotions? Because having limited other pint options all weekend, I sampled a few Rockshores, and I'd be pretty sure that it was all a negative advertising campaign by their competitors or drink aware to make sure that 20k people never touched another drop of Rockshore again!

On the food, an honourable mention goes to the Wok n' Roll stand. Normally they just sell nasty overpriced noodles, but at ATN they had a very good chicken skewer and rice box for a tenner. A full sized meal for 40% less than others were charging for smaller portions (I'm looking at you Kerala). And the pizza place charging like €22 for a pizza - jaysus lads!

Agree with all other comments - great weekend, well organised, superb Nick Cave, King Gizzard, CMAT, Dry Cleaning, Altered Hours etc.

The Mary Wallopers should be obliged to play every Irish festival from now on, whether they want to or not. Absolutely perfect gig for the fest!

    What a brilliant, brilliant festival.

Sterling organisation and not a Johno to be seen.

Friday night saw Trinity Orchestra, Gemma Dunleavy, Self Esteem, Jungle, Glla Band, Crazy P Soundsystem and Al Gibbs.

Saturday started with the Pit Bros breakfast which I really didn't rate, then musically the day was brilliant, Glasshouse, Mary Wallopers, Sing Along Social, Shame, Nick Cav and the Bad Seeds.

By this point I had drank myself out of contention some what and was falling around the place incoherently during Floating Points so my girlfriend suggested politely it was probably best if I went to bed, a request to which I acquiesced.

Sunday contained Blindboy, Rufus Wainwright, CMAT, Christian Loffler, George Fitzgerald, Underworld and DJ Koze.

Only gripes were the food was poor. Her Indoors paid € 90 for two tickets for the Pit Bros thing which I really didn't rate. Got a Mexican burrito the first night which literally burst through the wrapper and destroyed my favourite yellow sesh jacket with grease.

The Korean chicken burger next to where Blind Boy was speaking on Sunday was probably the nicest thing I ate.

Had intended listening to the first 30 minutes of Christian Loffler and then heading to DIIV, but very quickly decided there was no way I was leaving. WHAT A SET.

Only complaints are the Arcadia area was way too cramped and I think they got it wrong with some of the stage placements - George Fitz should have been in the bigger tent, and caroline's set could have been moved to somewhere more serene. Thought the bars would be serving Hophouse at least, can't stomach Rockshore. But these are minor gripes - an incredible weekend in an amazing location.

Missing Christian Loffler is my singular regret from the weekend.

    Friday

    Traffic/getting in was zero hassle.

Got a half decent spot in main campsite around 1.30, rake of cans and wondered into Firehouse Skank at the new Global Roots Cambium stage (some serious craftmanship on display there!)

A little bit of A Lazerous Soul, was up the very front for Dry Cleaning, Self Esteem wasnt doing it for me, so caught most of HousePlants. Annoyed that Sad Night Dynamite pulled, back to Cambium for Cian Finn, then King Kong Company, up to Arcadia for a bit, think it was Heidi and finally back to Global Roots for John Daly who was excellent. Im wrecked with just typing that out....Saturday and Sunday to come.

Not sure how the Something kind of wonderful tent was still standing after Shame and Flight Facilities took the roof off it Saturday night. Just an incredible few hours there. Global Roots was the spot of the weekend for me, great music and vibes and Kraken bar was the best for value in the whole site. RiRa was sensational there Sunday night, managed to make it after Christian Loffler. Was a great weekend, saw no trouble apart from a guy getting calmly escorted out from Joy Orbison Saturday night. Could do with it being a bit flatter, everywhere seemed a trek to get to. Little bit more variety needed in the music genres in the late hours, But saying that, I'll be first in line for 2023.

I *think it was George Fitz that played the Madonna/JT tune. He did give us some lovely Hot Chip tho so he's still alright in my book 🙂

There was Hop House hidden away down at the house, actually tatsed alright after a weekend of rough guinness. Agree the lawn in front of the house has been wasted since moving the bandstand, but it was nice to venture down there and chill every now and then.

On the food, the best value/quality I actually found to be the Vegan burrito/gyros place. Got my full there on Sat/Sun afternoon. Massive portions for 13 euros, I'm not vegan but my little one keeps singing "fruits and vegetables keep us alive, always remembered to eat your 5", so i took her advice and it worked. My festival diet of 1 portion of poutine on Saturday and Sunday has come to its end!

The global roots stages were lovely too, with some great tunes and dancing....i was very confused with the two woodlands areas....did global roots used to live in where the Jameson circle was this year??

Hahahaha thank you so so much. Im glad ya enjoyed the show, we had a fuckin amazing time causing carnage all weekend with our mates in Enola. Was a surreal experience to have Gilla Band, The Altered Hours, Sprints, NewDad and lots of other "heads" watching us, especially considering we were up against a significantly more established and very well loved by some Irish rock band. I appreciate you taking a risk on us and I hope it paid off for ye! Anyone here who didn't catch us (Gurriers) and those especially who've expressed a fondness for King Gizzard, Shame and all of those fantastic noisy / trippy aforementioned Irish acts... don't miss us at our next festival appearance in a few weeks, ye may just live to regret it big time.

Brilliant weekend folks, best ATN in terms of music for me and even better than 2018 I'm beginning to think but it's far too early to make such statements. I need more time to digest everything fully. My favourite performances are in bold below.

    Friday

Arrived on site at around 2 pm and it was a fair trek to where we finally set up camp, two trips in and out was 5 km. First time bringing a wheelbarrow - never going without again. We found a lovely spot down at the back of This Must Be The Place, really quiet, very friendly and respectful neighbours, everyone seemed to keep their area so clean and tidy and we had such a lovely view of the whole site from there. This was the first time in almost 3 years that my mates and I were all together (now) in one place so we had a really nice time catching up.

Into the arena then for Enola Gay, Dry Cleaning, MELTS, HousePlants, Jungle, Crazy P. I had an awful sleep, pretty much none, on Thursday night so I was fast asleep in my tent by 2 am. I wish I had caught some of Gilla and John Daly but that's the nature of a festival!

    Saturday

Pitt Bro's BBQ was the first port of call on Saturday and while it was lovely to sit down and have a meal, I was expecting better quality food/meat for the price paid. It was during this that the rain started (lasted 6 to 8 hours) and while at times it bucketed down the ground held up remarkably well. The beauty of the Carraghmore House estate is there are loads of areas to get cover from the rain. Then it was music from Niamh Regan, Halli, Conor Miley, shame, New Jackon, Flight Facilities, Rival Consoles, Floating Points, Groove Armada (second word bold as I really only liked the second half of the setlist 😅. Maybe I was fecked though from all dancing I was doing 8 pm). That was me finished again for the night and I missed Job Orbison unfortunately.

    Sunday

Sunday saw 50% of our crew leave due to family commitments but the great of us ploughed on. It was glorious day weather wise and that helped lift the spirits. We started with two gorgeous sets from caroline and John Francis Flynn, we were seated for caroline and the first half of JFF but he had us up and dancing by the end. I then caught the last 20 minutes of CMAT. Back to freshen up at the tents and in again for The Murder Capital, Christian Loffler, Thumper and Underworld. It killed me to miss Diiv and George Fitz but...Thumper's 45-minute set was just such fun and so good! They play Dublin in October so I am definitely going and dragging a few mates along.

    Monday

I was driving out of the field at 11:30ish and after a 15-minute queue to get out of the field we were away with absolutely no traffic problems.

ATN deserve a lot of credit for this year's festival, I am sure the organisers were nervous as hell on Thursday and Friday but they should be very proud of what they have created here now, it's nearing perfection for me and the likes of me anyway. Everyone seemed so lovely and chilled, great vibe. Please keep the festival at 22k ATN, no more than 25k! Also a word about water stations - nowhere near enough! There should be way more and separate ones for washing one's teeth, face, dishes etc and drinking water. Annoying as hell queueing to fill your bottle of water when people are washing up and not very hygienic having people spit into the same trough. The prices - I tend to block out what I am paying for food and drink at these things, I don't even look at what they are charging me when I tap 😂 probably a stupid thing to do but I only get one or two weekends like this a year if I'm lucky so I just don't want to know 😂

Things that worked for me personally and I will be certainly doing from now on:

    1. The wheelbarrow
    2. Low percentage beers
    3. Using ice water to wash my face/head
    4. Bringing some of my own fruit and other foodstuffs.

    Roll on 2023 😎

Good shout @El Director. This was particularly evident once it got dark - it was a bit too hard to find the drinking water stations easily.

Makes a huge different to have them lit up and easily findable when you have had a good few adult beverages already in the tank.

Great Weekend. Nick Cave was the absolute highlight. The man is a legend. I enjoyed the Murder Captial, DIIV and King Gizzard. Can anyone tell me what cover version King Gizzard worked into the last song (Dripping Tap)?

The lineup was a little bit too dancey for me, especially at night. It would be good to have a more diverse range of genres.

I liked the mix of ages attending the event. I hope ATN stays like this and doesn't go down the EP route with a younger crowd and a more commercial vibe.

The Arcadia site was a bit of a letdown compared to the previous set-up in 2019. I'm not sure if the areas down by the house worked well; it felt a bit disjointed there. I loved all the areas in the woods.

Great event overall. Very well organised. I'm looking forward to next year.

100% the Rockshore was awful wee. Wandered over the Hophouse bar once or twice, deffo appreciated that.. I heard Diageo were finishing the Rockshore, maybe they were trying to get rid of the last few kegs..

Best festival I've been to in a good few years. Great crowd, great location, and just a really good vibe all weekend.

Unfortunately, I drank a lot more of my cans on Friday than I had planned, which led to a bit of rationing and also having to buy more pints than I wanted to. Good job I drink Guinness because that Rockshore must be the pi**iest lager ever put in a glass. Not sure why they only had one place in the entire venue where you could buy Hophouse, yet all other booze was sold at every bar!

Will 100% go again next year. And fair play to them for sorting out so many of the issues from the last time. It was a doddle getting in and out.

    It was our pleasure!

What a weekend! Especially Sunday - we were absolutely flat to the mat all day long. Plenty of satisfied customers anyway. Thanks to all who came!

Unfortunately I didn't get to see much of the festival but I managed to get in to see Underworld after we shut up shop for the night on Sunday which was great - they played a stonker of a set - all my faves, Juanita, King of Snake, Rez, Cowgirl, Border Country, Born Slippy all in there.

Realistically, probably not. I am absolutely snowed under with other stuff myself over the next few weeks and generally speaking the TC crew don't really have much of an appetite for spending yet another festival cooling hundreds of cans and being asked how the machine works 100 times an hour instead of kicking back, listening to music and hanging out! 😅

BUT.... ATN went rather well..... 🤔

I probably wouldn't have bought at ticket back in 2019 if I'd known the line up.

Personally I thought nearly all of the headliners missed the spot. We left Jungle, Groove Armada and Underworld early. Groove Armada being particularly bad. I know Flight Facilities from their recorded tracks rather than DJ set and was a bit disappointed. Nick Cave isn't my jam but I could understand why his show was so highly rated. Not so sure about the hype for CMAT.

AE Mak , Amy Coulibaly, Monjola were all great. As well as Mary Wallopers, George Fitzgerald, DJ Koze, Christian Loffler.

A lot of Irish artists (probably would have been no line up if it wasn't for Limerick).

I was looking forward to John Francis Flynn having seen him once before life and being unexpectedly surprised but the sound was badly muffled during his performance in the tent.

A lot of the organisation was improved since the last festival. They've done a great job there. Seemed to be a lot fewer food stalls but that's probably outside their control.

Big variations in price, you could pay between 8-16 for a burger depending on where you went.

It's a nice festival and good crowd, but I'd need a better line up, particularly a strong headliner, to entice me back next time.
