Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

The event is VERY localised. I have never seen anything like it. There are hills two miles a part, one with two cm, another with nothing.

You must be at a relatively high elevation.

Can you please calm down with all the posts. Don’t mind you posting, just don’t clog up the whole thread. Thanks.

What you are describing is completely normal. A heavy snow shower (maybe more than one shower) passed over one hill but the other hill (over 3km away) didn't get hit by any showers.

That is likely to be the sole reason for what you saw.

The Slieve Blooms had white tops this morning when I was driving near Moutmellick as the skies cleared somewhat. I'd say 375m was the lower extent of it.

Snow showers now here in Mid Cork, at 650ft.

Was down in South Kerry this morning, heavy sleet showers under very dark cloud and then out into the bright again. Snow on mountains above about 2000 ft I would think. Very heavy hail showers here near Tralee. 3.7C

Why the big mystery about your location? You were kindly asked several times where your reports are from, yet you deliberately refuse to say. Not sure what your thinking is but it's certainly not appreciated.

We went through this same carryon this time last year, from memory we managed to get him to declare his location was `Ulster` !!

James Bond on manoeuvres, very hush-hush..

My version of Met Eireann's aviation chart for 18Z. Areas A, B and C are areas delineated by the hashed black lines. Their respective weathers are shown in each. Mostly rain, hail and sleet showers in both A (down the eastern half of Ireland) and B (the western half).

Reading between the lines I reckon he's somewhere northwest of Magherafelt, going on the coordinates of the location for the forecast soundings he posts (e.g. below). Not that we should actually care.

Wet-bulbs are stubbornly remaining well above zero, so low levels just not right for proper snow. A lot of modification has taken place in that airmass since Greenland.

Cloud building up for some prolonged showers. The parameters suggest cold rain and sleet only, let's see what falls!

Surprised to see how low the temps are today despite the good, if wet, typically Irish looking winter sunshine. Doesn't feel that cold out, but that is probably down to the near calm conditions currently. This will not be the case tomorrow, however. Afternoon temperatures likely to be higher than today, but no doubt it will feel much colder as the stronger NW winds set in.

    New Moon

Yes the window is for tonight but after that cold maritime air and strong winds it will be too "warm" for snow

The entire Dartry Mountain range looks so pretty. I can see it all but I liked this view on my drive home.

Hearing of plenty of heavy snow in parts of Donegal. I said it a while ago, December 2020 will deliver snow and plenty of it. Month only just starting

I was at Errigal this morning at 5am and there was only a very light dusting of snow.

Where I am now, I can see Slieve Snaght, Inishowen, alot more snow, same for Benevenagh too.

Well, the showers are actually breaking up here, just as well seeing as it's cold rain that's falling. If there is one thing I dislike more than mild rain, it's cold rain. It's such a waste. Damn you Atlantic modification. I wish I was in Donegal!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,819 ✭✭✭✭peasant

Sligo coast at pretty much sea level.
Had slushy cold rain all day.
But now, at 5 in the evening, the car is frozen ...there might yet be falling/lying snow down to our level during the night

this spell was never going to amount of anything away from high ground in Donegal and Northern Ireland. We need an easterly and unfortunately doesn't look we'll get one till maybe February or March if we're lucky.

Atlantic cold spells are modified too much most of the time and nearly always depend on being above 200 meters in the north-west of the country to see any lying snow that sticks around for more than a few hours.

The trend for this month is a cool first half of December but never really cold enough for snow in low lying areas at any point and then a return to the westerlies and mild for the second half of December.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,996 ✭✭✭Slashermcguirk

It’s hard enough to forecast one week ahead, no way of knowing an easterly won’t arrive in 2 weeks, let alone 2 months. Sure up until a week ago people on here seeing mild muck winter. It’s already snowing and not just on high ground

Enjoy the snow those who see it. It could be the last this winter. Blowtorch southwesterlies likely for the rest of winter. We'll be lucky to see a hard frost or two at best.

Nonsense. It’s easy to say that as it’s our prevailing wind and the form horse but it may and probably won’t turn out like that. Nobody knows what the weather in Ireland will be like in 3 or 4 weeks time. The weather will do what it wants and that could involve some surprises. No way this winter can be written off.

I love how people are writing off the winter and its already snowing on 3rd December! you couldnt make it up, Ireland comes into its own when it comes to people moaning and spouting negativity

cheer up and embrace the fact that its snowing already 3 days into winter, even if its not snowing in your own garden.

Where are you getting information that the second half of December will be mild?? It's the 3rd December and if anything the synoptics are looking v good

Hard frost this evening. Cold one in store.

It’s the unbearable negativity. At best forecasts in Ireland can be done 5 days out, I think a full week is nearly impossible. The idea that we could already know what will happen the second half of December let alone January and February is farcical
