Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

It's not available until the 7th, and there was an issue on their website earlier (the link wasn't working) - I sent them an email, and it seems to be fixed now: https://www.collectorcoins.ie/en/15-silver-proof-jonathan-swift-coin.html/

    Thanks Spocker for clarifying that

I had mixed up the statement above stating release to being on sale :)

Will this sell quickly? Still not sure if I like the look of it

If recent coins and prices are anything to go by, probably not.

I'll only be picking it up to keep the collection complete unfortunately, it won't be because I like it :(

My understanding is that there will be a Bram Stoker Dracula silver coin and a europa iron and glass themed silver coin next year. Besides these and the annual mint set is there any more coins from the central bank next year?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,444 ✭✭✭DMcL1971

The Ha'Penny Bridge coin was the Europa coin for 'Iron and Glass'. The theme for 2018 is 'Baroque and Rococo'. 2019 is 'Renaissance'. 2020 is 'Gothic'. The Bram Stoker coin was supposed to come out this year but was delayed until next year. I haven't heard anything about any others yet. I'm guessing there may be another coin in the 'Irish Science and Inventions' series.

Greetings all, first I would like to compliment and thank DMcL1971 for starting this thread.
I only recently came across it and it really is a mine of information.
Just wondering if anyone has heard about Central Bank coin issues for 2018.
Normally would have been at least an annual mint set issue by now??
    Thanks.

    +1 for that!

Heres a link for the 2018 programme, the annual set is available at the end of this month: https://www.collectorcoins.ie/en/2018-coin-programme

Can you still pick up coins from the new Central Bank location or is it now all mail order?

These limits are getting smaller and smaller

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,678 ✭✭✭✭fritzelly

    Gonna pass
Limits getting smaller probably because they're not selling like they used to

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 182 ✭✭Captainaxiom

They’re not selling because the central bank go out of their way to make purchasing them a pain. Where would you see it a collector unit going to a coin fair and not bothering to sell the coins at it.

See on the website where they have reduced the prices of past coins. Surely that's a kick in the a..e for people who paid full whack for them. Unless coins are expected to sell out sure there's no incentive to buy them when they are released at all.

Are you sure? The price of coins has gone up a lot over the years. What coins in particular have been reduced in price?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18 scoooby

Which coins are now at a lower price than when originally sold?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 289 ✭✭musiknonstop

    Rory Gallagher coin sold out!

  • Registered Users Posts: 9 Trachycarpus

That was fast! Just received my coin this morning and I must say I really like it.

    60 yo-yo - Hmmmm

50% dearer than any other silver coin (or used to be that is)

Restrict the numbers and increase the price - not liking this from them.

It’s like their actively trying to discourage people from collecting.

Actual Silver content is approximately 12 euros worth

I have to say, that is one of the worst looking Irish coins I have seen, terrible design

They only sell them online now.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 182 ✭✭Captainaxiom

€60 and another €5 for postage makes them very expensive .

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,678 ✭✭✭✭fritzelly

1000 sold already - has does that match with previous sold out coins?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 182 ✭✭Captainaxiom

The majority of that 1000 has probably been sold to dealers

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,736 ✭✭✭pawrick

I'm ok with the Dracula coin, could have been done better on first impression but after reading the spiel with the newsletter I can see what the intention was in the B movie styling.

Price wise I rarely buy any more as the cost has crept up too much imo and for the most part I think many of the recent designs have been poor, for me and I cant justify buying these coins over putting money in to other hobbies i get more enjoyment from.

Not forgetting the VAT is another €11 or so!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 176 ✭✭Sitamoia

VAT is 23%, so approximately 15 euro total per troy ounce. These coins are 92.5% silver and they weigh 28.28g which is less than a troy ounce.

Price keeps going up and where is the image from - surely not of the coin? An artists rendition or the artists rendition?

Was saying to a friend the other day the Bram Stoker coin should have been a double gold/silver set each depicting a scene from the story - would have been a lot more collectable.

These proofs are becoming more and more expensive at the same time as the silver is going down. Strange choice for a series that has almost all the coins of the last five years still available in the bank (with the only exception of the Rory Gallagher coin). And this despite cutting the mintage in almost half.

Not very sure about their strategy really...

First day of sales today. Any info on how it is going?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 182 ✭✭Captainaxiom

Is there a promo code for the postage. Wasn’t there one for the Dracula coin ?

Do they usually release plans for the upcoming year’s commemorative coins at the start of the year or do you have to wait and see what comes?
I would like to get a double set this year, but I guess some years they don’t do the double. I don’t want to hold out for a double and find the singles are sold out!

  • Moderators Posts: 6,871 ✭✭✭Spocker

We usually manage to get a sniff here, from some boardsies who know these things, but the Central Bank don't put out schedules IIRC

Anyone know what the price is likely to be? I'm expecting around the 400 euro mark...
