Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

I never understand why its unmarked cars leading those chases! Nearly every video iv seen of a garda chase in Ireland is lead by an unmarked car. Surely it makes sense from a safety point of view to have a traffic corps car lead the chase in a vehicle that is lit up like a Christmas tree!

Chase policy would be nice in Ireland too... K has lot of unmarks.

But qs is that who has cbd3 or cbd2 in the chase

Fair point, policy wise, are you not allowed take part in a chase at all if you dont have those qualifications? Or is it sort of, loose enough (if you catch my drift).

If you happen to see some of the clips of that pursuit you would notice a marked i40 with no blue lights on letting other patrol cars overtake on the ballymun road.
That was a CBD1 driver, they were the first marked unit to assist and the last to arrive at scene went it stopped. The unmarked primary was the first car that was hit so it had damage taken, it was more plausible at the time to leave it in primary due low civilian traffic and no pedestrian. I can’t say what unit it was but it was probably best they were number one given the equipment onboard the suspects vehicle.

I honestly hope they start fitting better lights as the unmarked units are near invisible for lighting but stand out a mile.....

The grills are different to most civilian, the lights in the grill are obvious as is dash light, Arial on the roof, rear lights only seen if you stand 45° to the side of the car.....

Oh yeah the steel wheels make it stand out even more too.

Some don't even have the dash lights.....

The Insignia estates have (factory fitted?) lights blended into the pillars of the hatch, very subtle but light up bright.Early i40's weren't great at the
rear, some improvements on the 201's at the rear. Interesting to know who's responsible for the bad lighting...in the UK it's checked out on the road before being approved:cool:

I contacted the actual engineer around 2017 to ask and he stated it's EU passed....

So basically to stay covert they don't fit adequate lighting....

Wouldn't cost much to stick in two red LED'S. if they ever did a traffic stop during the day and had cars queuing behind them or tried to move through a busy junction they'd be quick enough to put the extras in.

The rear fogs could easily be switched to flash as could the front high beams and so on...

The cycle unit? The mounted unit? Basically anything else that is non motorised.

Ah sorry, I thought he meant in the context of a chase.

Tucson or i20 wouldn't surprise me to be honest it's Ireland....

Sure they bought a sh1t ton of i30 and then find oh the equipment doesn't fit.... Eh well it did in the focus or Mondeo

You’re correct i40s are finishing! Lots of new estates white in the port at moment looks like they are buying large amount them

Tuscan will replacement them that’s why they are adding time in cbd2 for driving them too

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,609 ✭✭✭California Dreamer

Tuscon wouldn't be bad. I think the ride height is important. They strike me as being a bit better than the i40 anyway, could be completely wrong of course.

So Octavia/Superb for the unmarked units?

They are both the same really drive both not meant for police work.

Skoda superb part of the new contract is up in the air specialised units are getting few unmakes since last year but issue is the driving cert needed for them so not open to regular anyway

Few unmarked mondeo around so might be getting few marked but that’s the rumour

Wait till you see when we come out of the CV thing, there won't be money for anything!

Tuscon was added to the driving course because of their introduction to traffic units.

I'd put money on the next patrol car being the Peugeot 308 like the UK.

We've got their public order vans and I've seen some smaller unmarked vans too. Saw a Dublin City Council van from them too on a 192 reg.

The I40 seems to have been a very successful car for private ownership, they are everywhere to be seen.
I like the Mondeo but i'd guess they'd be too slow/bulky for policing work and of course expensive.

    People bought because cheap.

They have given huge gearbox, clutch issues.

Mondeo was the best patrol we had. Hoping they buy a ball of them when they stop production next year.

those octavias are very uncomfortable , the superb excellent , perhaps opel insignias
also base diesel Mondeo is very under powered , titanium model minimum , maybe time for opel again , the 152 insignias they had were super I had 1 myself 2.0 140bph
I now have 191 insignia , quite pleased with

Plenty of the 142 traffic , terrific car 200bhp . since Hyundai got the contract for patrol cars its been pretty boring fleet outside of armed support units, I was on RTE archives recently and its was in 1970s & 80s old style blue and traffic cars , all kinds of models sierra carina ascona corolla Renault 4 & 18s , montego , maestro , fiat mirafiori etc I could go on . i

Yes agreed that’s why but better train all is good idea.

You really love Peugeot’s 😂 they have 4 years left of Hyundai contract

Grand if they can supply them. The contract would be for a class of vehicle, not a brand. If they can't supply the class then move on. There is a list of approved vehicles for each class.

Mk 5s (current model) are generally a disappointment to anyone that loved the Mk 3 and 4 Mondeo's.

Built with a US focus (It's US sister car was the Ford Fusion) in the wider design.

The handling isn't up to what was the traditional Mondeo standard.

I did hear of reliability issues too - but on a 2020/21 model those might have been sorted.

It's probably an improvement on the i40 but that's about it.

A pity because they actually look well styling wise.

PEUGEOT are fine car , very popular in UK , I remember a 91d 405 marked when I worked in galway doing the rounds along with a marked 309 I think in Oranmore galway aswell as an unmarked white one in the bridewell in cork ,

They went mileage so quick as so little cars purchased since 07/08

I liked the estate avensis we had it never gave up but it went to another district we got a 07 focus replace (no joke) but I forgot why they were replaced...

Clutches, engines going bang... but realistic they first purchase since 2007

They are given to units and they were down so many cars couldn’t regulate mileage as it was one car covering the job of 3 cars that’s why they didn’t last.
