Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Did you miss the bit about social media?

Maybe i've missed the goalposts. Is it who's the most popular right now or who in their day was the most popular. I'm still saying Keane in both instances anyway. :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 38,941 ✭✭✭✭eagle eye

Madrid are a bigger club than United and not many would name that captain without googling, same with Roy Keane outside Ireland and the UK.
Please let's not get into which club is bigger. Can we just say they are both global Giants and leave it at that?

I have no problem with that. My point stands about a Madrid/Barca/Juve/United captain all being on about the same level, the majority of people around the world can't name them without Google.

Well you are deluded if you think that. No doubt that McIlroy, McGregor and Harrington are the three biggest Irish names now and almost certainly ever.

Right now it's McIlroy and McGregor for sure. Not ever though. Keane at his peak was known throughout the world (except USA) just like McGregor is now. Soccer is followed by billions of fans, MMA is not, granted McGregor's social media following is huge.

Have to laugh at the naive AHers that are unaware of the lengths your die hard McG fan will go to...

He'll hopefully definitely be our most famous inmate when he goes down anyway..
No can't think of anyone that might challenge him for it..

Hard to believe how much hate you have for somebody you most likely don't even know personally.
How did he offend you so much?
Why would you be wishing somebody was behind bars before it's proven he did something wrong?

Mcgregor has 2x Rory's twitter followers (7m compared to 3.5m) and 20.5x his instagram followers (30.7m vs 1.5m).

No, social media is not the be all and end all but it is a decent enough way to gauge popularity.

Can you imagine Roy Keane on Kimmel or Conan?:pac:

He's easily our most famous sportsman, and his fame is more to do with him than the sport itself. People seem to have trouble understanding that.

Who was the captain of Real Madrid in the mid 90s? Without googling.

    Hierro

In his pomp he was. By far. He was the captain of the biggest sport franchise on earth.

The person was arguing that he's more famous today.

That aside, Conor's fame is not tied to the sport or a fanbase in the same way it is for many sports stars.

His fame is more akin to the Kardashians - people may not know anything about them, what they do, or why/how they're even famous.

But they do know of them, and Conor McGregor also fits into that category.

They were arguing Keane at his peak. Ask about McGregor in 20 years and see how famous he is. Its not a difficult concept to undertand. Similar for the 'walking through Times square argument'. And again, America with its 350m people isn't even close to the be all and end all.

And for the Mcilroy arguments, a lot more people aged 40+ would know McIlroy than McGregor, they don't have instagram accounts.

If we are talking about peak fame George best beats both easily

Hell even nowadays there’s an international airport named after him. That’s real fame.

Overall keane is better known than both too. Not in America I grant that but worldwide

Even Keane at his peak is no where near as famous or as popular as McGregor is today. No where near. He is not just an Irish superstar, he is a worldwide superstar.

In his pomp, Keane was way less famous than his teammate David Beckham. Not to mention Zidane, Ronaldo and a plethora of other footballers (even the likes of Michael Owen).

I dislike McGregor but there's no point in denying he's become one of the most recognisable faces in the world, often for non sporting reasons. Keane will always be considered one of, if not the best sports people to ever come out of Ireland, but sporting achievement and international fame aren't necessarily the same.

Its not just McGregor tho Cristiano Ronaldo number 1 in the famous sports stars 2019 list has been accused of rape / sexual assualt by 5 different women over the years and the 2009 rape claim against him in Vegas there are leaked documents which have him admitting the alleged victim "said no and stop several times." Since October 2018 the legal representatives of the woman from the 2009 allegation have been trying to serve a summons to Ronaldo but can`t as they can`t get access to him, this is all being largely ignored by the media & football & Italian authorities & fans, primarily because he scores lots of goals & is widely famous popular

Would definitely be one of the most famous if not most famous Irish sporting stars ever, but it's all falling apart for him.

I was in Bhutan last year (thinly veiled I've been to Bhutan post) and when I said where I'm from the cabbie immediately started talking about Conor McGregor.

It's unlikely a Bhutanese taxi driver in the 60s or 70s would know who George Best was.

But we're not talking about the most skilled, just the level of fame. I'm not going to pretend to be an expert on football or footballers but this is something I've actually had many discussions on. In Brazil, with natives and other Irish travellers who were far more into football than I ever will be. No Brazilian of any age had heard of him. We had people ringing their friends to see if they had heard of him and it was always no. You gotta remember that this was before the Internet and even wide spread TV coverage. How would they have heard of him? A couple of lines in the newspaper about what the European teams are doing? They don't even pay that much attention to European football. Brazil alone is the size of Europe and every other country beside them is football mad too. They have their own leagues and competitions. Pele knew of him because he was also a footballer. Irelands best tiddly winks player probably knows Brazils best, but I haven't the foggiest who either of them would be.

Extending that, consider how many people there are in Asia. None of them would have followed European football in the 60s and 70s. Its not like they could stick on sky sports. But any of them that have heard of UFC will probably have heard of McGregor. Any that have heard of Man U will probably think of someone like Beckham or Fergie.

    Simply not true.

There’s loads of Irish ppl who don’t know who Conor is ffs

They say who’s that knackjob with the beard who does be fighting. I’m taking major numbers of Irish ppl don’t know him

All the fanboys need to realise mma is niche and not even considered a sport by a lot of ppl. It’s a flash in the pan job

It’s like in the early 90s wwf had its 15 mins of fame and the likes of randy savage was on the late late. It came and it went.

I remember ppl honestly thought wwf was going to overtake gaa and rugby in this country. They genuinely feared that. Ppl would laugh at that now

Basically Best had the same level of fame as the Beatles at the time. He was known as el beatle following the European cup win.
In Ireland/UK/Europe, sure I'll accept that. That name was made up by the media though to sell papers (in Europe).
He was extremely famous among soccer supporting nations.
Except Brazil apparently, which I'd argue is one of the biggest footballing nations. Again, how would you expect them to have heard of him in the 70s? They were probably only dimmly aware of the European cups happening. If they even cared.
More say than McG by a factor of ten.
Making up quantitative comparisons now? Why not a million?
Do you recall his funeral? Huge crowds. Wall to wall coverage on tv. Like princess Diana’s.
I actually don't but that's not too surprising. Were you in Ireland when it happened by any chance? A good measure would be to see how widely covered it was across the world.
They named their international airport after him.
It's a tiny airport in a small country whos recent history is marred with violence and division. It was named after him because the locals loved him, not because he was so well known worldwide.
I’ve had ppl from China stop me in Dublin city centre and ask where is the statue to him and have had to explain its in Belfast not Dublin
You do get into a lot of strange conversations that are strangely relevant to obscure discussions :pac:
China was going through the Cultural Revolution in the 60s/70s. They weren't watching European club football. They must have learnt about him since then. Which goes against your point about his peak fame.
He’s up there with Muhammad Ali and Pele in terms of fame.
In Ireland and the UK, sure. Worldwide, now or in the past? Doubtful.

You're the one bringing levels of skill into the conversation, and Brazil for some strange reason.
Nope. Beechwood keeps saying he was the best player and Pele agrees so he must be the most famous. And Pele is from Brazil so I'm just pointing out that even his fellow country men (a particularly football mad group of people) aren't aware of him. Finally, I actually have some first hand knowledge of the topic and how it relates to the country. I'd suspect the same is true in Argentina for example, but don't know for sure so not going to argue it.
Best and Brazil actually came up through you in the other thread so weird that you're complaining about it now.

If it went, as you say, how come the company is worth almost seven billion dollars?
