Active day. Some very big hail showers reported today , look at the ground coating in the video from Kilkenny.

Sunday (chart below) and Monday could be another couple of days to watch for the eastern half the country for some pulse storms as another polar sourced (slack) low hovers close to the county. Sunday itself will depend on how quickly the initial front clears through.

It only takes one strike to take out a whole herd of cattle. Because they stand on all fours, the potential difference between their front and hind hooves causes a current to flow through their body and heart. I remember hearing old wives' tales about staying well clear of animals during a thunderstorm as they "attract" lightning, but this false conclusion most likely came about due to the above.

Having said that, there was a good bit of action there alright.

Saw that there were calves killed near Tullow on the 15th as well , reported by Carlow Weather. Looking through Twitter there were a lot of CG strikes recorded, and a fair share of funnels over the few days ,the storms were quite potent at times.

As highlighted by Oneric Sunday is looking like giving thunderstorm potential post frontal airmass, a bit away but models showing a very cold upper pool of air over Ireland, possibly even colder than yesterday but surface temps look cool. Will be interesting watching this evolve and to see if it coincides with afternoon heating , might be more shear available also.

What kills them aswell is if they are standing in a pool of water during a lighning strike and heavy rain

Consistently showing very cold uppers on Sunday in the post frontal unstable airmass . Should be some fairly ok shear available with some convergence aiding the instability giving decent lapse rates. Temps fairly low , would expect quite a few heavy hail showers again and thunderstorm potential could be widespread. Cold night following into Monday with more hail and thunderstorm potential

Nice write up here (for those that might have an interest) on the 10 year anniversary of what was one of the most severe tornado outbreaks in modern US history (May 22nd 2011)

    https://blog.weather.us/a-most-disastrous-tornado-ten-years-ago/

And came across this real time footage from this event which does nothing but show just how terrifying it is to be in the direct path of an F5:

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cQnvxJZucds

Incredible to see how dark it is outside in that vid and it only the late afternoon, not to mention the unnerving sound of the tornado before it hits...

I remember watching live news coverage of that storm as it was happening, a reporter showed up to film the aftermath and was in total disbelief at what he came across, the town looked like the aftermath of a nuclear explosion

I think this might have been it

And people complain about Irish weather. They actually whine about how bad Irish weather is. Most of them have never seen an MCS right above their heads, unlimited energy right there. And they complain about a bit of rain and few puffs of wind.

Convective weather overview for Sunday 23rd of May 2021

The post-frontal environment will be characterised by cold air aloft overspreading SSTs and diurnal heating inland. Scattered showers are likely to develop over Ireland, and given 300-500 J/kg CAPE and modest cloud-layer shear then some sporadic lightning seems likely. The strongest cells may produce hail 1.0-1.5cm in diameter and wind gusts of 40-50mph. Overnight, the risk of showers expands eastwards into southern and western Britain with an ongoing risk of a few lightning strikes near coasts and offshore primarily (10-15% chance).

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,219 ✭✭✭Gaoth Laidir

The Valentia sounding (launched 11Z) shows a few hundred J/kg of CAPE already present down there at that early time. With some further surface heating inland during the afternoon we could see 1000 J in some spots of the south midlands and east. Strong shear too.

Much rumbling in Clonmel. Too bright to see any lightning though.

Thunder and lightning in south Roscommon now.

the hail moved in first, a decent covering of that on the ground and just easing off now.

Nothing on netweather/blitzortung yet (have definitely noticed they are not as up to the minute in the past year or so. Used to be instantaneous coming up on the map)

Edited to add Blitzortung has one strike marked west of Lough Ree

    Todays detection for the record.

    Netweather

    ATD Lightning Detection System

From Met Eireann 'The ATDnet Lightning Detection System is optimised for detecting cloud-to-ground lightning strokes and flashes rather than cloud lightning (inter-cloud and intra-cloud lightning). The majority of lightning occurs in the storm cloud itself or between clouds. On average approximately 10 to 20 percent of all lightning over Ireland are cloud-to-ground strikes'.

Maybe E Munster, Leinster especially around the SE perhaps with the most risk of Thunderstorms and hail tomorrow afternoon during peak diurnal heating as convection builds over land on its track from the NW to the SE, Temps up around 13 / 14C in good sunny spells.

We had a nice thunderstorm this afternoon moving up west of here that unfortunately died out before i got into a decent viewing spot, similar to last Tuesday evening.
Some nice but distant cloud to ground strikes.
A friend sent me a screenshot of a strike, quality not great.

Took a small video but unsure how to upload (it's MP4 format and would rather not use external website). Here is a screenshot of touchdown :)

Have a few other videos and photos of this passing through south Roscommon/Lough Ree.

Quiet day convective wise yesterday , just a few strikes picked up on the ATD , 1 near Borris in Ossary, 1 near Killkenny and 1 just off Rosslare.

Surprised there were no sparks over north Dublin today. Several heavy hail showers before lunch culminated in a near tropical downpour around 4pm. M1 was a washout, and spot flooding on minor roads.

Not sure if this footage is from that exact storm, but captured in Kansas on the 24th:

Great footage, but a strange tornado. It continual forms, dissipates and reforms in different regions of the same small area, all while appearing to be rapidly moving... which it actually isn't.
