Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Are these YT videos working for anyone?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,794 ✭✭✭Squall Leonhart

I suspect dee-lite will walk this, but my vote is for Godley and Creme. I am a big fan of 10CC, so one hit wonders they may be, but as part of musical history they're bigger than that.

Vote 2 is for talk talk, great song, the No Doubt cover updated it a bit, but still stands the test of time.

    Any reasons for your picks?

Cry because I love the song and love the video and love G&C.

Love Will Tear Us Apart because it's an amazing song, which I fell in love with when I first saw Donnie Darko - I know, late to the party, but I got there eventually.

Groove is in the heart, because the tune hits my brain as I read the words

Love Will Tear Us Apart, bends the definition a little as they were an incredible band but I love it (and nominated it!)

Also, I think Talk Talk's most distinctive song is Life's What You Make It, so disqualify them!

At least three of those acts were not one hit wonders. Godley and Crème had a few more hits including Under My Thumb and Wedding Bells. Joy Division had another hit with Atmosphere. Talk Talk had a number of other hits.

Dee-lite and joy Division for me...Both bring back lots of memories.

Both were on different mix tapes in my first car, 90 minute memorex tapes in a stereo that didn't have rewind, away to lift my mates on a Friday night to do laps of the town......ahhhhh those were the days

  • Registered Users Posts: 657 ✭✭✭irishejit

But would agree Joy Division had more than one hit

You can't be disqualifying them if they pass the criteria in the OP of the thread

No more than 3 UK/US top 20 hits. They only got 3 in the UK

    1982 Today Chart 14
1986 Life's What You Make It Chart 16
    1990 It's My Life (2nd Reissue) Chart 13

They never made it in the US and It's My Life took 3 releases before it got Top 20

Technical KO with 4 top 20 places
    "Under Your Thumb" chart 3
    "Wedding Bells" Chart 7
"Cry" Chart 19 UK and Chart 16 in US

Don't ruin it by splitting hairs over what is and isn't a one hit wonder. This thread MAY change your life but it won't change the world.

    :p

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,421 ✭✭✭✭Kolido

If a song charted in both regions it still counts as one, I'm sure I mentioned that earlier.

I have screened each song, as far as I can tell, they all qualify according to the rules. However, rule two is subjective.

But I wasn't being that serious

1983 "Love Will Tear Us Apart" Chart 19

    I like all those songs!

Love will tear us apart because it always gets my mojo going and Groove is in the heart because I'm in that kind of mood.

I had a look at the original post and I see no sign of the stipulation for no more than 3 hits. I thought a One Hit Wonder is where an act has only one hit in a particular country, e.g. U.K. or U.S.A.

1988 Atmosphere Chart 34 - it certainly is a hit if it got to the Top 40. One could argue the Top 50 as well.

Discuss away folks. The rules may not be clear, if a song charted multiple times it still counts as one, the 3 only means 3 different songs. Also if a song chated in both regions it still counts as one.

You did and I withdraw my TKO thought.

    Match 1
Groove Is In The Heart because it was one I considered nominating myself, but just didn't quite make my final cut. Glad to see it in here.

    Match 2
Love Will Tear Us Apart because it was one of my childhood favourites, even though these days I do much prefer the Nouvelle Vague cover of it and rarely listen to the Joy Division version anymore. Still a solid tune though.

vote joy division. because i know the song.

One could. But one shouldn't, as the game rules are pre-defined, whether you agree with them or not :)

    Match 1:
Groove is in The Heart because it makes me want to get up and jump around the place. Also was in Topshop on Saturday and a hippity hoppity mix of it came on. My little foot started jigging and my head started bopping.

    :)

Will think about the 2nd match in a min.

Show Me Heaven. Love that sappy song.

    As for the other one...

Gonna go for Breakfast at Tiffany's for the belter of a chorus. Though I won't be too upset if Electric Dreams makes it through

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 32,956 ✭✭✭✭Omackeral

1 Show Me Heaven as it featured on a chocolate ad and I was a rotund child but is just overall lovely anyway.

2 Together in Electric Dreams because it's not annoying and Breakfast at Tiffany's really really is.

R1: Show Me Heaven, great belter of a choon

R2: I'm not familiar with Together in Electric Dreams off the top of my head, but my vote goes there due to my deep hatred of Breakfast at Tiffany's.

    Match 1:
Maria McKee. Definitely. Many a time as a teenager did I stand screeching in front of my "hi-fi" to that song. BAABY HOLD MEE DOWN AND LE-ET ME DRE-EEEE-EEMMM OHH
    HEA-VENNN!!!!!

    Match 2:
Deep Blue Something. Love it. Its sweet and singalong. Also great name for a band.

  • Moderators, Recreation & Hobbies Moderators Posts: 16,287 Mod ✭✭✭✭quickbeam

I like Show Me Heaven, but I like Something In The Air even more, as it's a cracking tune (these songs seem to remind me of films, this one reminds me of The Dish, that Australian film about the moon landings).

I don't know the Phil Oakley one, but I like Breakfast at Tiffany's. It reminds me of stuff, so I'm voting for that.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,149 ✭✭✭Tammy!

Show Me Heaven because it just a classic love song.

Not too fond of the other two but I'll go with Breakfast at Tiffany's.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,896 ✭✭✭✭Spook_ie

    Round 1 Match 3
Thunderclap Newman - Something in the Air It was out before I started to switch to things like Slade

    Round 1 Match 4
Deep Blue Something - Breakfast At Tiffany's Just prefer it
