I've just joined this thread but definitely a need for more cheesy songs.

Saturday Night by Whitfield has to be included.

How far are we through, just had a quick scan and haven't spotted any of my OHWs, which worries me they are going to be matched against each other :(

Was in Arnotts last night and in the middle of all the Christmas music that came on. It was very strange.

128 songs, so 64 first round match-ups. Plenty to go yet.

Match 15 - Follow me, very catchy

Match 16 - Suzanne Vega, although Tom's Diner is her best song surely, ahead of its time.

  • Registered Users Posts: 9,027 ✭✭✭Ficheall

I'm a big Suzanne Vega fan, but surely not a OHW? Many of her other songs are better than either Luka or Tom's Diner.

Tom's Diner, incidentally, I believe, was the song used to provide the tuning for the MP3 format.

    My votes:
    R1 Match 15
Tom Robinson Band - 2‐4‐6‐8 Motorway

    R1 Match 16
    Suzanne Vega - Luca

    Match 15
Tom Robinson Band - 2‐4‐6‐8 Motorway another from my era, a 2000 song is never going to beat it IMO

    Match 16

Suzanne Vega - Luka hard choice, both my era but Luka gets it.

Tom Robinson and Suzanne Vega motor on.

    Tom Robinson Band - 2‐4‐6‐8 Motorway 6
    Vs
Unkle Kracker - Follow Me 5

The Bluebells - Young at Heart 2
    Vs
    Suzanne Vega - Luka 6

    Yes, Chesney!
Quintessential one hit wonder. Saw him live years after and he was so sound too, he knows and embraces the fact that everyone only knows one song :p

Midnight Oil, because the time has come to say fair's fair

Chesney Hawkes ftw, cos he wrote that song about me ya know :P
Wonder if the lyrics should be changed to 'I am a One Hit Wonder, you can't take that away from me'

Not fussed on second one if I'm honest.

It was an open air, free one and I genuinely remember it being two songs. I may have just forgotten all the others though :p

Here you go way to fasssssssst. You don’t slow down you’re gonna crassssssh. Love it!

Beds are burning is some tune too. My daughter and I sing it when drunk. Glad someone put it in.

    Crash
    Beds are burning

    Match 17
Crash because its an absolute tune, has made its way on to many a playlist of mine, and is part of one of the greatest movie soundtracks ever... Dumb & Dumber

    Match 18
Informer because licky boom boom now and other such nonsense lyrics. When 'Informer' is the only word in a song that anyone knows, but everyone sings along anyway is how you know its an absolute hit.

  • Registered Users Posts: 6,009 ✭✭✭Declan A Walsh

    R1 Match 17

Chesney Hawkes - One and Only

    VS

    The Primitives – Crash

Now there's a proper one hit wonder: One and Only, because this really was his only hit, unlike the rules that apply here. While I like that song, I have to give my vote to: Crash by The Primitives.

    R1 Match 18

    Snow - Informer

    VS

Midnight Oil - Beds Are Burning. My vote goes to: Beds Are Burning.

The One And Only Chesney Hawkes. Gotta be a top contender for overall winner because, while it might not be the best song among the 128, it is bloody good and it's quintessential one hit wonder.

The other one I have no opinion on.

  • Registered Users Posts: 32,956 ✭✭✭✭Omackeral

Crash because that Chesney Hawkes abomination is the worst song ever made. Thankfully it was his one and only ''hit''.

    Informer
on the other one. It's risque.

    Crash, because no thanks Chesney.

Beds are burning, because it's a great tune, reminds me of time spent in Australia, heard it a lot there.

(for a laugh, check out the mid 90s Jim Carrey parody of Informer called Imposter. Borne from the fact that yer man was Canadian but trying to sound Caribbean)

    Crash , it's an upbeat tune !

Beds are Burning , love that song , think I nominated it , maybe someone else did too though !

Don't think I know any of those 4 apart from Chesney Hawkes, to which I'm fairly indifferent. And I can't really listen to the other three at work without drawing awkward questions! :p So I'll impatiently wait for the next four to vote again. Will give the winners a spin before Round 2 though.

    Match 17

Crash. What a tune, Tracy Tracy's voice is just perfect for it.

    Match 18

    No opinion

I vote Crash. Good song. Chesney Hawkes? You are just an annoying little **** but you're not even the only one of those either.

    Beds are Burning. Great song.

  • Registered Users Posts: 13,361 ✭✭✭✭Kolido

Chesney crashes at the first round, The Primitives and Midnight Oil advance

Chesney Hawkes - You and Only 3
    Vs
    The Primitives – Crash 6

    Snow - Informer 1
    Vs
Midnight Oil - Beds Are Burning 6

  • Registered Users Posts: 10,896 ✭✭✭✭Spook_ie

The Primitives – Crash just a great voice

Midnight Oil - Beds Are Burning though if it were competing against anything decent it wouldn't have got my vote

    Seether- Broken, anyways.

Great song to play after a night on the tiles and aptly describes my mental state post alcohol consumption.

No opinion on the other one.

Hadn’t heard either of the first match.

Swing out sister - breakout. I love, love, love that song. Had it on replay when it was released.

I do love a bit of chas n Dave though and wish they weren’t paired together.
