Subtle winds around 10m are doing this causing downwelling of air under high pressure (which has breached 1040hPa here now). There is shallow fog around here and there seems to be some inversion cap in places at roof height of standard two-storey houses.

Several stations at 1040 hPa at 2300: Athlone Costume Barracks, Cork Airport, Gurteen, Moore Park, Mullingar, Oak Park. Exact figures show Cork Airport the highest on 1040.3 hPa.

Lowest is 1037 hPa at Donegal Airport and Malin Head.

Freezing fog at Shannon Airport. Visibility 100 metres

Coastal and upland stations are by-and-large above freezing: https://www.xcweather.co.uk/observations

Mt Dillon's -4c along with Benson, England top the cold temperatures table.

I dont want to come across as authoritative and telling people what they should do with their own pets but tonight in our neck of the woods the temperature will plummet to -4 degrees Centigrade or even colder and there are still people who will leave their dogs and other small animals out in the cold tonight , in the back yard or just letting them roam the streets . But could pet owners just imagine would they like to be outside sleeping in these temperatures. Just because dogs have fur coats this dose not necessarily mean they will survive or not be caused pain from the frost , especially animals like short haired dogs and the like . plus the frost (as baking hot tarmac in the summer) can damage the pads of their paws.

If you are one of these pet owners who don't allow dogs into the house , would you please even consider a dry and draught free shed or garage for them to sleep in when temperatures fall like this with preferably some kid of heat and a nice bed and some blankets - its only the humane thing to do on nights like this .

And if you hear your dog or other dogs in the distance tonight moaning/whining/barking and crying its a further indication that they are cold and need to come in.

    Thank you.

Fog thickening here in South Laois. Hit -4.0c earlier, but yo-yoing between -3c and -4c since. Wouldn't rule out a -6c or -7c by dawn at this rate.

Another dive in temperatures, currently -4.3c on the AWS. This seems to be a trend tonight - plateau for an hour and then drop by 1c or so in a few minutes.

The AWS here in south Laois reported -4.2c last night (Mercury thermometer reported -4.5c), so probably safe to say that tonight beats last night as the coldest night of the winter so far. If we breach -4.5c tonight, it will be the coldest night since Ireland's 2018 record low of -9.7c was reported on March 1st that year.

At 1am it's a chilly -4.8c on the AWS making tonight the coldest since Storm Emma in 2018.

    Just for comparison...

A low of -4.7c (AWS) was recorded in 2019
A low of -9.4c (AWS) was recorded in 2018
A low of -5.2c (AWS) was recorded in 2017
A low of -6.7c (AWS) was recorded in 2016

A low of -5.2c (AWS) was recorded in 2012
A low of -6.6c (AWS) was recorded in 2011
A low of -13.4c (AWS) was recorded in 2010 (Manual was -14.0c)
A low of -7.0c (AWS) was recorded in 2009

Just home now, - 4.5 out, and I could hear dogs and possibly cats or foxes around the place. So obviously people do leave them out around here.

Just checked and its actually can back up to - 2

Its a shocking indictment even in this day and age. Is it ignorance , the fact that some people think they have fur and will be ok , or that they are naturally outdoor animals and they will be ok , some people actually thinking its cruel to have them inside , and then some (even though supposed to be family pets) treat them like animals. But then you do get the other end of the spectrum that treat their pets as one of the family ... or sometimes better treated than one of the family! :)

    I agree with you.

The dogs breed determines it's tolerance to temperature. A healthy huskie for example would be fine in -4c

This is the inverse of watching temperatures on a hot summer day. A little breeze from some direction and it drops/rises dramatically.

Got -4.9c around ten minutes ago, now -3.9c! A gust of 6mph (highest of the day) clearly mixed the airmass a bit!

Nah fecks up the golf in the mornings:mad:
All joking aside with the yellow ball comment.
I had a browse with the effect of frost and a golf course.

    I seen this article.

Frost is basically frozen dew that has crystallized on the grass, making it hard and brittle. A grass blade is actually 90 percent water, therefore it also freezes. Because of the short mowing height (sometimes as low as 1/8 inch) and fragile nature of the turf, putting greens are most affected by frost. Walking on frost-covered greens causes the plant to break and cell walls to rupture, thereby losing its ability to function normally. When the membrane is broken, much like an egg, it cannot be put back together.

Golfers who ignore frost delays will not see immediate damage. The proof generally comes 48-72 hours later as the plant leaves turn brown and die. The result is a thinning of the putting surface and a weakening of the plant. The greens in turn become more susceptible to disease and weeds. While it may not appear to be much of an issue if a foursome begins play early on frost-covered greens, consider the number of footprints that may occur on any given hole by one person is approximately 60. Multiply that by 18 holes with an average of 200 rounds per day and the result is 216,000 footprints on greens in a day or 6,480,000 in a month.

Just on the pets being left outside, it's not the reported air temperature we should consider but rather the near-ground temperature, as that's where the pet is lying. On clear nights this is several degrees colder again than the air temperature (measured at 1.5 m agl). For example, by 6 am this morning the grass temperature at Oak Park had fallen to -11 °C and at Gurteen -10 °C. The respective minimum air temperatures were -4.1 and -4 0 °C, and they've fallen lower since.

Pressure-wise, Oak Park was the highest at 8 am (1045.1 hPa), with several others on 1044.7.

1044 hPa dead bang here and with a fair southerly breeze.

Really anywhere south from a line between Dublin to Shannon (approx) has a fairly reasonable chance of getting a 1048 reading over the next 24hrs. If this figure is achieved at any point then it will be the highest pressure readings for January since 2000.

It’s bad alright and things have to start changing soon. Having said that, we got our last BFTE the last two days of Feb 2018 so there is still plenty of time. Central and Eastern Europe often go into the freezer in February.
With a bit of luck we might get close to the freezer but will probably have to settle for the fridge which still might be enough for some snow to lower levels.

I thought last winter was bad for cold weather and snow but this winter takes the biscuit. Last year we were constantly teased with charts that never delivered and a SSW which failed to have any effects for us. This winter there has been absolutely nothing except the odd cold pub run which is completely mild by the following morning. There is still hope for February but right now we still don't have a single ingredient on our side.

A little hint of that light in the sky here this eve but probably not as much as what you have. We got a bit more cloud as the day went on and that southerly breeze that you alluded to earlier certainly added a bit of windchill to proceedings today. Still a nice day if out and about and wrapped up. We did however get a lovely dawn and sunrise here in Mayo this morning. This followed a glorious evening sky yesterday.
