The photos are really interesting. How come there is so much furniture, etc left? Was it closed down kind of suddenly?

When i heard Loftus Hall had been sold I nerdified myself and read as many online articles on the place as i could.

I think the fact the place has been so off limits to the public has really created the mysticism about the place, afterall the tale of the devil playing cards there is exactly the same as the Hell Fire Club in Dublin and a whole host of other places around the world.

Me wonders if members of the public do get to step inside and the dust settles, will it be any more haunting than the Hellfire Club?

I live near it in Wexford and i can tell you its "not haunted"

It looks great as its out on a hill by itself but thats the only haunted thing about it .

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,569 ✭✭✭iamhunted

it makes a good story though and Im afraid thats all people seem to be interested in. If its got a story (even though its the same story thats associated with a few 'haunted' locations) and it looks derelict then that equals haunted to a lot of people

Yeah your right . There is nothing they can do to dispell that . They have actually tried . But there are no witnesses out there that have seen things , there is no common haunting occurence there . All the people that have lived there have not reported anything and its famous for the story about the devil going through the roof. And that was not even true and it wasnt even the same building .

The government should have purchashed loftus hall. If it was britain, it would be in the national trust and fully protected. .

If it was Britain they'd wait until someone else bought it , did it up etc. then they take it off them and rename in Royal Loftus Hall and give it to some Scottish guy with a frilly shirt !!!!!

ah I'm living in the past that would never happen. There is a similar house near me in Dublin, It's getting into a similarly poor condition, I think that a certain amount of these houses being restored is a good thing, but not too many, I guess with Duncannon Fort and Hook Lighthouse it might work as another place to visit there and add to the bulk discount ticket they sell. I think that on it's own that it would not be enough of an attraction, but it could supplement what's there already IMO.

The government should have purchashed loftus hall. If it was britain, it would be in the national trust and fully protected. But our govt doesnt seem too concerned with doing such things. Its all about getting votes for them. I really hope whoever does buy loftus hall does it justice and restores it to its former glory. And of course, be open for the public to view. It could make a lot of money as an attraction which would benefit tourism greatly around the area.

Loftus is a registered protected structure so it could not legally be knocked down. However it can be left to fall into ruin.

There's nothing unusual there - properties like Loftus are left collapsing into a pile of rubble all over Ireland.

Yeah apart from the devil story is there anything that happened in this house to make it haunted?

Im in agreement with the above....

Theres a few other places around Ireland which have the exact same card story, Looks like the devil is a bit of a gambler and doesn't learn from mistakes aye?

Iv been to loftus hall lots of times, Never had any weird feeling being in there (when it was open to the public) other than I found it strange to have a bar. My nan always told me the story of loftus hall as a child going to bed...Might explain my skepticism.

It would be great to see such a lovely building repaired and opened to the public.

Every place in Ireland has a story or ghost story attached to it. Yep Grandma's and Grandad's every where responiable for this lol. Hey were else would we get our legends from. Lovely tradition to pass along :D

Loftus Hall fascinated me ever since I read about it in school (Matter of Fact, you might remember). I have the Haunted Ireland book and it mentions the story. Wikipedia says that a boat arrived at Hook Head on a stormy night and a man was welcomed into the house.
Although it is a fascinating story, the Hellfire Club in the Wicklow mountains has a similar story.

Woah only found this thread now.
I was in Loftus Hall years ago, about 15 years ago. We used to have a holiday home in Fethard, we'd go down there every summer, used to love it there.

Anyway, when I was about four/five we went to Loftus Hall. Now, I had no idea whatsoever about it's history or why we were even going there at the time and it's only in the last few years that i've found out. I remember visiting it so clearly, I can even remember the song that was on the radio lol.

It must of been a guest house at the time because we went into the bar area. Such a beautiful building, was huge, i remember very clearly walking in the big door into the hall and there was the sound of dogs barking viciously, quite scarey when you're four :o. What was really strange was there was a scream from upstairs when we were in the hall and the old lady came out and brought us into the bar area straight away. It was quite odd, there was noise of televisions on and people talking but there was no one there :| We were the only people in the whole place.

Even the bar area was weird, we didn't stay long at all, think just finished our drinks and left. They only sold coca cola as well :mad:but that's beside the point xD.

After talking about it since with my parents my mother said she wanted to get out of there fast the place had such a horrible atmosphere. I often wondered why I remember it so vividly being so young, I didn't even know the history so it's not like I invented things in my head. Very eerie place.

Breaking and entering? And boasting about it here? Ffs. Just cos its a 'haunted' location does not make it fair game.

    Hey there.

I have had the experience of going up to the hall. Myself and 9 others travelled down, but in the end only 3 of us walked up, including me. We had no intention of going inside or any thing, we just wanted to go look at the house itself and all that. We made it to the top of the drive way when I clearly heard dog's barking, as did my 2 friends. We walked slowly forward with anxiety wrote all over our faces. Just as we reached the pillars turning into the court house one of my friends stopped suddenly. I turned and asked "what's wrong" he pointed at the corner of the pillar where the big tree's start and said "there's some one there", the other fella also started backing up, and at this point I was afraid to turn around and look. After a ****ing scary 10 seconds or so I did turn and I am almost certain to this day that I seen some one standing beside the pillar...
We turned and ran back, but had to dodge the spot light of a local and eventually made it back to our cars. To this day all three of us can swear we did hear dogs and see some body at the top of that long lane.

That was almost 2 years ago.
After reading this thread I had renewed interest and travelled down with a lager group with more people genuinely interested in the paranormal. We arrived at the gates, and about 2 minutes later we had 3 local men telling us they had our registration plates and would phone the guards if we so much as touched the land at the other side of the wall.
We made them look silly and told them we were on our way to visit the light house, the left but we never went back to the house...

I am genuinely curious as to why the locals are so protective of this place, I mean yeah it may be private property buy besides that what harm is there being done with 3 or 4 people walking on the land?

Also, as for the stories behind this place.
The Generic devil story is not true, how ever, the story of the priest and the children in the "devils room" is true and actually recorded (some where :o).. As for the cannon's plaque I think that may have to do with the fact that one of the residents did suffer from a mental illness leading the family to believe that she was possessed and needed an exorcist. People seem to forget that the idea of possession is accepted by the catholic religion and at the time would have had to be taken very seriously.

    Hey there!

Wow, Nail bitting stuff. The first time you went up to the house how did you even get down the lane to begin with?? There is a man living in the little cottage directly across from the main gates of the house and he gards them with his life, anyone that even remotely slows down driving by the gates and hes out like a shot telling them to "Move On"......
I went down to Loftas for the frist time last year with my boyfriend, just for a look and to try and get a few pictures for my friends Web Site Abandoned Ireland.... we parked the car a couple of hundred yards down the road while we decided which was the best way to head in. We walked down the road towards the gate to take a look, there was no way in there with out beeing seen so we turned around and walked back, just as we turned on our heals i heard the front door of the cottage click open and an elderly man stepped out, i wanted to look behind but we kept walking. He went back into the house after a few min, when he was gone we made a dive into the field next to the house. We made our way down along by the hedge and kept low. We ended up down beside the beach, so we were coming at the house from below eye level and from the back. We were in stelth mode going through the fields, all of a sudden a car drove up the lane at speed and started circling the house. We stayed low in the corn fields. Eventually the car left and we moved closer to the house, by this stage there was only one hedge and a narrow gravel road seperating us between the house. We were just about to stand up and make our move when my BF said "GET DOWN" theres the car again..... the car, out of "NO WHERE" just drove out from behind the house!!!! We ducked down behind the bushes and the car came closer rolling along the gravel track, it stopped right beside us on the other side of the hedge, we were practicly holding our breath it was sooooo close. After a few min it drove off!! Lucky or what!!!! In the end we just packed it in and left cos they were onto us from min go, how i dont know, we were not seen at all and were ultra sneaky. Ahhww i got a few good photos anyway, thats all i really wanted and to get a close up look at what all the fuss was about!!!!

So anyone whos planning a trip to the house, be carefull cos they are wide to everyone, its harder than it looks :o

please, someone tell me why anyone should go near loftus hall in the first place? Its looks creepy granted, but theres a lack of people reporting any paranormal incidences there at all at all. Can we just bury this creepy=haunted idea? (pardon the pun) as it obviously isnt.

Yeah i think its for sale a good while now, i saw that add some time back!! What a house, could be amazing again in the right hands. I took a look at the photos in the add, pity it dosnt still look like that inside!!! Its absolutly trashed inside and filthy to. Are they gona do it up inside like it was?, before they have people viewing the house???? Surly the state of the place inside would turn potential buyers off???!!! Some people just cant see past the mess and get a mental pic of what the place could look like with a bit of TLC!!???

went down there fairly recently with 2 of my m8s was very creepy... didnt see any wierd old men etc... altough i suppose the fact it was 3 am might have lead to the lack of attention we recieved.... really wasnt up for it when we got there as their was an alarm box on the front and also on the right hand side of te house there was light shining behind the boards.... but i didnt drive 2 and a half hours to bitch out... so we proceeded with caution...

the main gate was a no go cause there was a silver Volkswagen Caddy kinda van car thing parked right outside.... so we went into the field to the right of the house which has just bein recently harvested.... there was straw bails etc all over it which really didnt settle the oul nerves.... felt like i was about to be abducted by aliens.... anyway we got to this ridiculously large wall on the far side of the field and decided not to head for the house straight on and stayed to the right..... when we got to the corner of the wall i tryed to climb it to scope out the area.... and naturally when i got to the top of this dirty big wall a slab which seemed solid broke off and i came tumbling down like humpty dumpty into the nettles and then got the slab of rock to the back.... no fun.... loftus wanted to give me pain... anyway we went around back and reached the second corner in the wall at which there is barbed wire and a freaky ass Virgin Mary statue which is broken in half and leaning up against the wall.... so creeped at this stage...

so on our approach to the house we avoided the old church and living quarters for the old workers and stuck out in the field till we were on the southwest side of the house which is the back for anyone without google maps.... and we went forward where there were no obstructions... then we noticed a red light ontop of the house and naturally jumped to the conclusion that it was an infrared camera and that we were busted... but after a 5 minute gander at it we realised it was an old un-activated emergency light which set our ideas of being arrested to rest... anyway we went up and touched the house and unless youve bein there in the pitch black u have no idea how **** scary it is.... the sheer size of the house and its boarded up windows.... really.... it gets ya.... so we pushed on around the house with some stealth as we were wary of that van at the frontgate and taught there may be security.... at the front of the house we noticed there was one window unboarded up to the left of the alarm box and we could see a faint light inside.... and to the right of the alarm box was the boarded up window that you could see proper light coming through.... anywho we proceded around the house some more all the time looking for a way in wthout "breaking" and entering.... we got a bit braver and went into the old church and snapped a few photos while gettin scared half to death by a pigeon that suddenly left its nest in the hurry.... we went into the old living quarters hoping to find a way in to no avail as everything but an old boiler room was boarded up... then i went mission impossible style

back were we started i decided maybe u can get in through the roof and decided to jump up onto the roof at the back of the house.... all the skylights were boarded up but you could see inside to were there used to be a chandaleer which was past a wall which i didnt think was safe to be on the other side of as i didnt no how sturdy the old slate section of roof was.... although for any other adventures the lower roof itself was perfectly safe for me and im 11 stone-ish.... but be careful... anyway after the we realised that the only way into the building would be with a crobar and would instantly turn the posssible "trespassing" charge into "breaking and entering" & "posession of a weapon" we decided that we'd had our experience and werent really up for being arrested for something serious....

all in all it was well worth the drive down and gave me something to do on a night when money for goin out wasnt accessible :p no paranormal things happened at all and the local wildlife gave us the biggest scares excluding the creek of the boards with the wind and of curse that eeery ass light which i still cant figure out....

Would love to know bout anyone else whos made the trip and maybe who has a way in without the use of brute force...

p.s sorry for the essay :o

    Hey,

Thanks for the story, i was there myself a few months back with my BF before the security was so 'in your face'..... But the guy in the gate lodge house was onto us after a while, plus it wasnt fully dark yet, and they kept driving up around the house circling it non stop....

Have you seen the inside of the house before?? Ive seen pics of every room inside, its manky, a guy and his GF got into the house some time back and went throught the whole place at night.;) "If there reading this now im sure they know who they are"..... they lit candles and shared a bottle of wine and some cigerates!! :D haha

So, the window with the light on, do you think there was someone in there? or lights just left on to put people off?? Was there no way in that window? Best thing to do is and the only way in is, unscrewing and removing one of the chip boards quietly and carefully, go in, and put it back in place while inside, so it looks like it hasnt been touched. Oh and remember what window you went in cos there is a hell of a lot of them!! When you leave just screw the board back on tight the way it was!! ;)

Would love to go back sometime for round 2 haha :)

it's been copied from a video cassette so the quality ain't too great anyway. i may have compressed it a bit too much alright.

i have a 500mb version which i can get up on a file sharing site, no torrents allowed on my network unfortunatly..

i live up the road from it so been in it hundreds of times, when it was a convent, hotel and derelict..

had some laugh last night reading all the posts in this thread. the boys in blue blamed showing that video in the hook lighthouse for all the break-ins, so they banned it, i blame this thread :P

Cheers Sam, just watched the video. Interesting in places, gas in others!
I liked the theory on the ball lightening heeheehee
I'm sure the paranormalers will love this stuff ;)

If you upload the 500Mb I'll download it :) My main interest is in seeing the interior of the house. Amazing how much the place has deteriorated since being left empty. Funny that Sherry Fitz are still advertising the place with photographs that must of been taken in the 60s!

Yep there are some hysterical posts on this thread.
    and too many eejts about!

Thanks again for ripping the video, great work.
