Alright Lads, I see from your posts you are looking for a friendly? When you get your team set up and a few games under your belt would you be interested in arranging an 11 a side game with my group?

I organised a game earlier in the year against another Boards group and was great craic. We booked the all weather pitch in Peamount and played the full 90 mins.... Our group dont play for a team, we are just a group of mates really

Let me know if you're interested once you get the numbers

That'd be good craic alright. Hopefully we get consistent numbers for these games so we can have 11, and a few subs, to take ye on in a friendly

If you are looking for players, i'm available - in the area and usually free Tues/Thurs.

Will leave my name here anyway and keep an eye out if you need me :)

Yes it was a good laugh when we played against the other group, nothing dirty in it just a kick about. We obviously had no ref but we agreed on fouls, offside's etc.

If you get your game organised and build up the fitness & that give me a shout :)

Enough for a five aside now and a squad of ten is probably perfect for a six a side league.

    :)

Just a couple more and I will try organise a 6v6 for us.

Will check on pitches and then see which pitch suits most best (maybe a poll).

    Good progress!

    Thanks all!

I will look at getting concrete details on a few astro turf pitches - availability, pricing, quality, accessibility etc. between now and the end of the weekend.

We should be able to have our first game next week - maybe Tuesday, probably Thursday.

We should then have a good indication how we're going and hopefully we can get another few on board in the meanwhile!

Good stuff. I suppose once you get a list of available pitches in the areas mentioned previously, we'll just do a vote to see which ones suit best. I know most of us are fairly flexible with regards the whereabouts of the astro turf but I know there was a few who could only go if it was in Sandyford, Stillorgan etc

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 5,460 ✭✭✭Barry Badrinath

There are some brand new pitches in Ballyogan. Never been but its just off the M50 and beside a LUAS stop.

Not sure if its any good for ye.

Yes, was thinking the same myself. a poll for what pitch and maybe one for which day.

The only thing is these things take time so maybe a first game next week is too ambitious but we can try and get it done.

Tuesday or Thursday next week sounds good to me.

As another poster said, probably good to have a cut off for the 6 a side league if that's the plan.

    Happy to help organise.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 35,024 ✭✭✭✭Baggly

We can work on a pitch for a friendly, but if its astro league, in Dundrum, you are looking at:

    396400.png

There is also a 5 aside option for Wesley in Dundrum

    396401.png

There are also available options for Sandymount and Booterstown, but they might be a little far from the area we were talking about.

No exact cut-off, as the cut-off appears to be whenever the league is full.

The astro league I saw was kicking off from 25th Sep (i think). So, if we have (at least one) successful 6v6 in the meantime, there's no reason why we can't field a team in that.

Irrespective of that though, it would be good to have an individual 6aside group running independently, which people can join. I was involved in one in Cork which had 6v6 games on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday - administered through Boards.ie and Whatsapp groups. They had to start somewhere too!

Yeah Sept 26 I think is first day of it. That's a Thursday in Benildas Dundrum.
Id say the 14 lads will drop to 10 when we decide what day. If panel keeps growing we would end up entering two teams or an eleven a side. 6as would be better though

having a GK on board is a big plus for astro.ie league ..sure lets get the friendly and see

Good few bodies down, happy days, How about geting a whatsapp group going for matches etc?

If looking at joining a league id suggest we try to arrange as many casual games (2 a week?) amongst ourselves as possible to gauge fitness and ability levels, especially if lads havent played ball in a while, the tempo in the leagues can be extremely quick and require a decent enough level of fitness. They have rolling subs which helps but its still very fast paced.

Yeah, I'll set up a Whatsapp group once we have a more established group of people who have come to the 6aside games - no point in getting ahead of ourselves too much.

We're going well though, the interest is there!

Looks like its actually free! Whatsapp is handy though as everyone already has it. Something we could transition into for sure though, looks highly reccomended.

    Yeah, lets go for it.

I was just at Monkstown 'DLR Leisure'.

They have a good few astro turf pitches (w/ big goals) that look good. They are €65 a session and you book in blocks. That would be €6 each.

If its too awkward I can continue scouting.

Also, were we to go for it, maybe Tuesday is the best day to do the blocks in as the Astro league is the Thursday. So. I'd propose Tuesdays 7 - 8pm if we can get it!

I tried to post the URL and a pic of location but, alas, post count no sufficient yet!

I'm the person who runs the Cork City version of this and I just wanted to say that it's well worth the effort to get a casual game up-and-running and wanted to wish the OP luck in getting it going.

We started off with 12 strangers meeting on a Thursday evening for a kickabout over three years ago and we now play Monday, Tuesday and Thursday games with about 30 players, training bibs for each evening, a surplus kitty that pays for nights out, and we just recently entered a team in a regular league.

    Best of luck with it!

The astro league seems a little over priced or am i the only one thinking that, the per player price is based on having 10 a game which just isnt true.

Think social game is key for now, as its very early to commit to expense of a league .

In terms of the cost, the Astro league works out at about 5.70 a game but i'm minded to agree, its best to get a 6v6 up and running before commiting to the Astro league.

Especially so, as that is competitive and we dont know the level of players and which players have what regular availability.

Considering that league is starting in about two weeks, maybe we should focus on doing our ow. Thing and if we have a group that wants to enter thw Astro league down the line, great.

That would also free up Thursday's as a 6v6 day, which seems to suit many anyway.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,119 ✭✭✭Colemania

I'd be in the same mindset too regarding getting together first to see what kind of group we have and depending on regular numbers and the standard of players, then enter a league at some stage. I've no real preference with playing friendly or competitive games anyway so its all the one to me.

I played and managed a 6 a side group in Limerick when I was around 20 and getting regular numbers was tough plus we only won 1 game in the league, although never got hammered, but we never had the same team and while it was good enough craic at times, it's no fun getting beaten every week!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,139 ✭✭✭martineatworld

Yeah I'd agree with a friendly game first. We've no idea of the standards of people.
I play in the Wednesday casual astro league in benildus and it's great fun but two new teams signed up this year without realizing how competitive it was and they got hockeyed by 10+ goals every game.
Also, I can imagine the interested people list will continue to grow, while if we went for an astro league, we'd be cutting off people interested in a game. And isn't that what it's about, providing a game for people who want one!?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,140 ✭✭✭guile4582

yeah lets go for it, friendly wise don't care what evening next week

as for block booking, thursday is always decent to play ball.....you never know a cheeky pint might come into the mix down the road apres match!!

Thursdays for some 6 on 6s sound great.

As others said as well, we can play to enjoy it if its between ourselves and block booking will keep the interest.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 35,024 ✭✭✭✭Baggly

Tues or Thurs is no problem - Monkstown is a bit too far of a stretch for me; were there other options or is Monkstown the consensus at this stage.

Agree re: Astro - lets keep it amongst outselves until we have a settled group.

Yeh id go for that, Ideally want somewhere a bit more central as traffic in and around monkstown can be bad that time of the evening, or even push it out till half 7 or 8?

the cost is 5.70 a night if you have 10 players which you won't,

as for location im flexbile but agree monkstown not easiest to get to, the new pitches mentioned in previous post or along luas line and traffic is never too bad in that area after 6
