Any old english titles here are usually restricted to land owning and farming, there are a few earls still in meath. From my line of work and what i have seen the land is farmed for the earls. No harm there, they take good care of the land and have good farming prectice, Any lords or earls still living in stately homes in ireland maintain them welll and encourage visitotrs into the houses and maintain their history. iv no beef with them.

I have a major issue with big land lords owning lands within Ireland that go unused or neglected. I don't have an issue with lands that landlords (some of whom may be english) have opened up to the public or have turned them into public parks/gardens/houses. However this thread is approaching this topic from a specifically anti-english viewpoint.

Why not take issue with the thousands of acres of land owned and run by aristocrats and gentry from Ireland like the De Burgh's living in Kildare? Not all of the land that is private and run by landlords is English owned. The forgetful amongst us seem to ignore that large amounts of land that was gifted to Irish chieftains, soldiers, lieutenants etc etc by the British crown. Not to mention the self made landed Irish gentry who were left in control of their lands due to the influence they had in the country at the time.

While we're at it, why not have a go at the current line of Irish landlords running dilapidated housing in our towns and cities and charging huge amounts for rent? Or the greatest landlords of them all, Irish Banks!

I think what TheGoose is trying to say is that, back in the day with that Collins fella, when he met with the boyos from across the pond for them 26 counties back, he meant the whole of each of the 26 counties. He didnt mean "well, sure give us some of the county but sure you can keep most of it!"

I hate those 'der takin our xxx' sayings. No one talks like that and its just making a joke out of a serious issue. Usually by people who are in favour of such issues.

 That's one of the best Southpark quotes ever! :D
I've only ever seen it used ironically, as in by people who know how serious an issue is, but still don't see the point in over-reacting to extreme levels.

To be honest, there's tons of land owned by Irish Property developers in England.

Are you suggesting the English take that back?

I bagsy* the whole island. No back answers. Tip black. Tip wood. Dibs on the rest of the world too. Now GTFO!

Bit of a difference between the two!
The Irish Property developers paid money for that english land. The English who own that Irish land own it through invasion and kicking the native people off their land.
IMO not only should these english landlords give back the land to us, but offer an apology and some compensation.

    Because the stole it?????????

I knew that some still had land but thousands of arces?
I dunno, it just seems a little pointless for all those men and women to have died for the country to have independence and they still let these people to hold on to lands that were given to them by the dictator of the country.

    oh rly?

Going further back, didn't we Homo Sapiens steal that land off the Neanderthals? Thank goodness they're too extinct to steal Ireland back eh? :)

The Irish mail also informed me of the knob throwing contest in Dorset.

i cant believe people actually read the mail. it's the most jingoistic of all the papers out there, they try to hide the fact they're a tabloid but fail miserably

Why? Should you be forced to apologise for things your ancestors did? And to pay reparations, even though it was nothing to do with you?

Oh, and doesn't squatters rights mean that the land would be there's by now anyway?

You wouldn't say that if you'd seen some of the girls I've gone out with!

Really? No society could function without "intriciate and comprehensive" law. The Brehon laws were unexceptional.
Oh, so we have intricate laws now, but sure so what. I swear, some people would rather swallow a pineapple than give the Irish any points. Sad.

What you can do for me is make up a list of canonical laws of the time, Irish, Saxon, Roman, and we'll say Chinese for the sake of it, and compare and contrast the Irish laws with its contemporaries, awarding points on the basis of thoroughness, interpretations, windiness, and wordcount.

Until you can do that, you're full of crap. :D
Anyway - the people who own it now , own it. Get on with it- its just a bit a land!
Except for the fact that if these parasites are actually charging people to rent the land or develop it, they aer slowing down the development of the country for their own personal profit. Again.

Er to claim squatters right you actually need to squat there.

I hardly think LACK of development is Ireland's biggest problem right now :)

But haven't they been doing just that for several hundred years? It's like Kenny and his neighbour. Neither actually lived on the land, but since Kenny tended the land, he felt he had a right to it. The difference with the landlords is that nobody has contended ownership rights.

    Christ you are an idiot.

The fact is it was not the ruler of England to give to their ancestor's and when the Republic was formed it should have been taking back for the country.
On what grounds? How is the Republic taking land from the english any different than the english taking the land from whoever? Nobody who was alive at the time the Republic was established, had any claim to any of that land.

Robert Mugabe decided that his country "owned" the land that their white countrymen occupied and decided to "take it back". That turned out well, didn't it?

Damn I was hoping by this stage that boards would have decided to mobilize into a fully fledged military unit and was heading off across the pond to wage war.

Then I would have been able to kick back and when I wasn't watching my English premier league football, I could switch to sky news to get the full report on how the military campaign was going but would most probably just watch Eastenders on BBC

Why don't RTE step in and sort this out?

We could have a programme called 'Celebrity Land-Grab' where prominent members of the Irish Celebrity D-List community must attempt to grab back land from these English lords.

It'd be better than some of the drivel they're putting out at the moment:D

Seriously though has anyone ever heard the story that prince charles owns the whole of Cornwall and takes nominal rents off every homeowner in the county? Not sure if its true but heard it a few years back.....

I like it, we could get Pat Kenny as the wise old Land-Grabbing guru and as it's RTE, Lucy Kennedy has to present. :D
