English lords still own thousands of arces in Ireland from the plantations

Hey all,
Just read in then Irish Mail on Sunday (reliable I know) that a group of Lords from England still own thousands of arces here in Ireland since the plantations.

Now I m not a mad RA head here but there s definately a little voice inside me that says hold the **** on mate, surely stealing all the way back doesn't mean they should be still allowed to keep it.

Then I guess the question is who should get it if it is taken back?

Any old english titles here are usually restricted to land owning and farming, there are a few earls still in meath. From my line of work and what i have seen the land is farmed for the earls. No harm there, they take good care of the land and have good farming prectice, Any lords or earls still living in stately homes in ireland maintain them welll and encourage visitotrs into the houses and maintain their history. iv no beef with them.

I have a major issue with big land lords owning lands within Ireland that go unused or neglected. I don't have an issue with lands that landlords (some of whom may be english) have opened up to the public or have turned them into public parks/gardens/houses. However this thread is approaching this topic from a specifically anti-english viewpoint.

Why not take issue with the thousands of acres of land owned and run by aristocrats and gentry from Ireland like the De Burgh's living in Kildare? Not all of the land that is private and run by landlords is English owned. The forgetful amongst us seem to ignore that large amounts of land that was gifted to Irish chieftains, soldiers, lieutenants etc etc by the British crown. Not to mention the self made landed Irish gentry who were left in control of their lands due to the influence they had in the country at the time.

While we're at it, why not have a go at the current line of Irish landlords running dilapidated housing in our towns and cities and charging huge amounts for rent? Or the greatest landlords of them all, Irish Banks!

I think what TheGoose is trying to say is that, back in the day with that Collins fella, when he met with the boyos from across the pond for them 26 counties back, he meant the whole of each of the 26 counties. He didnt mean "well, sure give us some of the county but sure you can keep most of it!"

I've only ever seen it used ironically, as in by people who know how serious an issue is, but still don't see the point in over-reacting to extreme levels.

Bit of a difference between the two!
The Irish Property developers paid money for that english land. The English who own that Irish land own it through invasion and kicking the native people off their land.
IMO not only should these english landlords give back the land to us, but offer an apology and some compensation.

But haven't they been doing just that for several hundred years? It's like Kenny and his neighbour. Neither actually lived on the land, but since Kenny tended the land, he felt he had a right to it. The difference with the landlords is that nobody has contended ownership rights.

On what grounds? How is the Republic taking land from the english any different than the english taking the land from whoever? Nobody who was alive at the time the Republic was established, had any claim to any of that land.

Damn I was hoping by this stage that boards would have decided to mobilize into a fully fledged military unit and was heading off across the pond to wage war.

Seriously though has anyone ever heard the story that prince charles owns the whole of Cornwall and takes nominal rents off every homeowner in the county? Not sure if its true but heard it a few years back.....
