Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. I made a converter board that connects the socket on the 1Up control board to the RPi- GPIO header - using 2 old harddrive cables... no usb converters needed.

    Works ok :)

Just need assemble in the cabinet and figure best key layout for mame.

I'll be seeking advice soon on how to mount the pc parts in the case so they don't move around.

I also can't see away of removing the various revisions from showing up as duplicate games in Attract Mode with the game logos.

Seems like it's going to take some hard work.

The Invaders cab is ripe for converting to a classic vert game board.

Funny enough my father in law is building us a shed in the near future, unfortunately I'll need to put real life stuff in it like tools and bikes and toys. Anyway judging by the customer service I'm receiving from them at the moment I won't be putting anymore business..... Ah who am I kidding I probably still will:D
So I'm still waiting for my replacment screen, emailed them yesterday and they got back just not to say they are chasing their warehouse to see where it is. My bet is they don't even have a replacement in stock and I'll be waiting a long time.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,801 ✭✭✭iamtony

And still waiting for a reply, it must be a Huge warehouse. Does anyone know if gamestop are restocking these at all? I'd love to bring it back and swop if for a street fighter unit.

Finally managed to filter my roms so only the parent rom is listed, therefore no more clones!

Also figured out how to filter games by keyword in Attract Mode, i was missing catver.ini so now filtering works, although games of a certian type were still left over.

So then I used a utility called MAME Content Manager Plus to filter out all the non Arcade Roms,
    casino, mahjong, mature games etc..
from the romset (including random stuff like satelite TV boxes, digital multimeter firmware and god knows what else!)

Kicks clrmamepro and romcenter in the ass, far more easier to use.
It took a while but was worth it, im now almost 27,000 roms lighter.

So now I'm down to exactly 2600 games listed in Attract Mode which isn't too bad.

Only problem is the game fylers aren't centred, fan art takes precedence over flyers by default if available:

They said yesterday (after I emailed again) it would be shipped that day and I would receive an email with a tracking number once parcel force skanedbthw package but low and behold no email.
They are also out of stock in the Dock protectors. Won't be till the end of January.
So to sum it up their customer service is absolutely terrible.
I wouldn't mind if they just told me out straight they didn't have it or whatever but they keep saying its on the way.

Youtuber Detroit Love shows how some other users made backlit Marquees for their Arcade1UP cabs, there's even a guy selling full kits to allow people to do it themselves:

The only thing I need is the new spinner from the team in the US, that will be a drop in replacement for the existing one on my Asteroids/Tempest cab.
But the Galaga cab would be class, though I would probably stick a vertical 60in1 or similar into it, I wouldn't pay more than €200 for it though!

Attract mode is very easy to alter the theme layout files to fix artwork locations/etc.
go into the layouts folder and then into the layout you are using, take a backup of the layout.nut, then open the original and go to town on it, it's pretty easy to work out whats going on, most themes have comments in there.
    example:
    local flyer = fe.add_artwork("flyer",23, 85, 260, 345 );

    23 is the x axis
    85 is the y axis
    260 is the width
    245 is the height

you should also be able to comment out the fan art in that file somewhere

Awesome man, thanks! Do you use it yourself in your MAME setup?

I had a look at layout.but alright but didn't know what the numbers related to.

I hit another snag with the setup, I'm probably going to need to splurge on a second hand GTX 750 TI as I cannot run scanlines with the integrated Intel HD graphics 2000 video card.
The HLSL runs even street fighter II at a snails pace,.and it won't run the more efficient GLSL as i think it required a later version of Open GL than 3.1 which is the highest the card supports. Just results in a black screen.

I was considering buying one of the cheap 20euro hdmi scanlines generator PCBs but it means more mess and it would be limited to horizontal scanlines only which would look wrong for shmups and other vertical games.

TBH I would have no interest in using MAME without scanlines they just make that much difference.

It's a shame as the Tiny 7 installation I have boots really quickly into attract mode with the SSD drive as is.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,058 ✭✭✭Doge

GTX 750 TI ordered! Still cheaper than an SLG 3000 :p

Also found some nice HLSL settings for MAME on the hyperspin forums, including one for vector games to give them more glow:

I like how this one isn't just plain scanlines but looks like arperture grill also. :)
    Zoom in on that goodness.

So screen finally arrive! Only took a month to get sorted:rolleyes:
Anyway have it installed now, only afterwards did I realise I should of just saved myself the hassle and just replace the board. The new screen doesn't seem to fit as snug and there's a little gap between the screen and the screen protector, either that or the machine didn't go back together the same way it came apart. Can anyone confirm if the plastic screen protector meets the wood on theirs?

Yeah the told me end of January before they got stock of the Dock protector, and judging by the **** I've been told I wouldn't expect it till end of February.
Anyway great fun is been had with the rampage cab, its kinda good you can only play a certain few games, as it makes you explore them alot more. For now anyway. Shame the high scores reset everytime you switch games. I know it's true to the originals but that is what makes people keep coming back. I've no problem keeping it plugged in round the clock but even that doesn't help.

    Same here.

iamtony is great screen protector hard plastic or just a plastic film?

You're meant to take the plastic film off, otherwise the colours look washed out.

My cab only came with the plastic film.

I gave this a go but strangely enough there was no change.

I edited the layout.nut file for the nevato theme, edited the numbers next to flyers on the fe.add_artwork line and Also the fanart line just in case but nothing!

Was onto the creator of the theme on the forums but he hasn't replied yet.

I took the plastic film off the hard plastic screen with artwork around the screen which covers the lcd and is held in place with 4 black screws. I suppose you could call it the screen. But the plastic edge on the new one doesn't meet the inside of the side of the unit if that makes sense. There's a gap of about 2mm each side. I think the old screen was flush.

Edit: I just reread my post and I didn't mean a gap between the screen and the screen protector. I meant a gap between the plastic screen and the actually machine.

€180 for these seems like a bit of a steal. Would it be possible change the control panel out if I wanted to stick mame in it?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,058 ✭✭✭Doge

You could just drill extra holes into the control panel, in my case I drilled ones for the coin buttons for the street fighter II cab.

Other option is to drill a couple 'coin' holes on the angled fascia (at your knees so to speak), plus a flush USB extension if so desired.
That way, you wouldn't need to do a job on the overlay protector if/when they manage to get them out to people.

Not mine, but just for an indication (though could do without the eye-gouging light show)

Detroit Love hits the mark on what these cabinets are, I have zero time for all the snobbery and hate they receive.

The fact that such a product even exists despite the hiccups that go along with a new product, make these times a great and interesting time to be alive for retro gaming enthusiasts.

Heres how my setup currently reboots / boots up:

With all the mods I done you can't even tell it's booting into Windows 7, almost looks like a Pi installation except it boots much faster!

Oh and MAME 0206 was released yesterday, no longer am I running the latest version. :(

So i’m thinking of ditching the plastic overlay when it does arrive eventually as I’ll have to cut holes into it for the extra buttons and speakers and will probably melt the thing using holesaws in the process and fail to get a clean cut.

So I’m thinking of using Rust-Oleums clear protective spray for painted surfaces instead of some cheap plastic / acrylic cover.
    Anyone have experience with it?
Should I go for Matt, semi gloss or Gloss? I’m thinking Matt.

You can get it from your local woodies:

They'll eventually release full size cabs if they sell well surely. Ideally I'd buy 3 full size cabs, one normal 6 button sticks, one with a wheel and one with a lightgun. Are these possible to buy anywhere that have the relevant MAME configured and ready to go?

Nope. Closest you’ll get is second hand cabs for sale with MAME.

Or if you’re willing to diy, flatpack arcades from the U.K.

Light guns are a waste of time on LCD screens due to the input lag:

Speaking of hacks this is a lovely and simple one for the backdoor of the cab.

A guy in the Arcade1UP & modding Facebook group put hinges on the backdoor and used one of the stock balltop as a handle.
Must say it looks very well indeed:

A Pi walks all over the standard innards. The only thing to be careful of, is being really disciplined with adding games. I'd suggest ad the stock games that come with the cabinet, and no less than 10 more. They can be changed/swapped at will, but having that many games leads to Netflix syndrome.

Full Romset ftw. :P You can always add 10 favourites to the front end.

It would be a pain constantly adding more games imo, especially for me since I lost my little wifi adapter recently!

I've been there with Mamecabs & bartops before...you actually *need* it to have as little as possible on it, to ensure you actually play it. If it's too easy to ad new games, that's what you'll do. It should be the same as swapping out a pcb, ie, requires effort :o

TBH I'm anxious about pulling it all apart.
I have a PiZero there, unloved and perfect for the kinds of games I would want, but I have not the wit or the will to convert it over, even though I know it would be better.
Would a Pi even work with the "spinner" the cab comes with??
Or would I be investing all over again?

It appears that the Asteroids cab is making the move to live next to the AWSD cab, so it may get more use.
Can we get the risers here for it?

I did it with the Rampage cabinet - works.

I have several versions of Gauntlet available to me now - the easier First Arcade release
-I think the version normally available is the harder version 4? The earlier versions people used to be able play all day on just the one coin :)

..And also some other slightly different versions.

All are two player versions though - I think I may have the newer cabinet as I didn't get the other games.

I also did the Audio hardware mod - just two points to solder together so you get both left and right audio - not just one channel - it did improve the sound!
Points are Sooo tiny though - I recommend you don't do it unless you have a very small - preferably surface mount, soldering iron.

This weekend I will try get round to his other hack - the Serial Port one - to enable the Second hidden menu.
Haven't done it yet because my TTL converters are all 5v but the board is 3v i think...

On the Asteroids cab I would only want what the control panel supports, and no more.
So that's anything that can play off the spinner and a horizontal monitor.
When/If the Galaga/Galaxians machine is released here I would love to turn that into a pure vert Shmups cab.

Silly me, I incorrectly thought that asteroids had a vertical monitor despite only playing it recently on my own cab and the real thing in Barcadia last year!

Anyway the Arcade1UP asteroids cab is currently in stock in the Cork GameStop Patrick's Street according to the map, for €178.

The last cab to be listed on their site.

Not sure how it works ok the Pi but I physically had the first button in button 0 on the zero delay encoder, button 2 in 1, button 3 in 2, and so on upto button 6, and then had the start button and coin button in next 2 in that order.

All games work perfectly in MAME in windows that way.

You should hit tab in MAME and set the controls for all games like that. Instead of having to configure them for each game.

Even the likes of street fighter II were mapped correctly using this default for all games.
