That's where things get really expensive, really fast and failure rates go up, putting the business model in jeopardy.

But they would have to come up with a solution, to have every house connected..like break into duct before it enters the house..And the cost goes to the customer...shouldn't be that expensive...replacing drains to the road works out cheap enough..
But doesn't the telco own the cable all the way into the masterplate... so would the cost be then up to the telco...?

And this is the very beginning of the FTTH rollout! Awful lot of one off houses out there with all sorts of issues.....
And the reason being builders making shortcuts....

Plenty of houses though without these issues being left out as usual. FTTH still should be the way to go though as we can overcome these issues. If someone doesn't want some holes drilled then tough luck they can just be skipped.
Well eventully when Eir get the go ahead to reclaim tons of copper..then the problem arises of fibre not connected into 100% of houses

It doesn't have to be ...... only connected in to those who request it, and if there is a request then necessary works will have to be allowed to be performed.

Apologies if this question has already been asked and answered. My aunt's house has a blue line going past it on the map, but the nearest planned cabinet (not live yet) appears to be 2.7 kms away.

I'm assuming that's a complete no-go, so she will have to wait for a nearer cabinet to be planned. Is there any indication yet how long it will be before all the 'thin blue lines' get served? Or is it all just an indefinite piece of blue string?

I'm wondering if it's worth recommending Imagine with its 18 month contract to her ...

No. The cabinets are not directly related to FTTH (the blue lines). Anyone on a blue line will be able to avail of the maximum speed of 1Gb/s. Eir have announced the first 100000 premises to be completed by March 2017. If your aunt is in one of these areas it may be worth holding out. The remaining 200000 are to be done by 2020.

If Eir run into too many issues with the last 100 meters as described above, then I suspect they might go for G.Fast for these sort of hard installs *

G.Fast will help them avoid all the messing around with blocked ducts, etc.

    * though obviously not he 800 meter run described above!! Lucky lady.

Absolutely. I was thinking that would have been a good solution for the Mount Oval example.

Slightly OT, came across this Huawei press release earlier this evening from the AngaCom trade event currently taking place in Germany - Huawei and M-net will deploy the first G.fast access network in Germany
M-net to offer bandwidths of up to 800 Mbps in Munich
    Thursday 9 June 2016 | 15:42 CET | News

German regional network operator M-net is to continue its fibre expansion in Munich and connect another 35,000 buildings using G.fast technology. This will allow data speeds of up to 800 Mbps. M-net is cooperating with Huawei, with whom the operator worked together in 2003 in Augsburg.

A total of 230,000 flats will be supplied with fibre in this new expansion stage. Over the next five years, M-net expects to reach 70 percent of all Munich residents. The operator aims to provide fibre for all flats in the future.

Getting 2.4Mb at present. House is on "BLUE LINE". Cabinet is showing live.

Got a flier from Eir this morning in post addressed to my area offering 24Mb.

As far as I can see there has been no change in local network. Openeir did a network and pole survey a few week ago.

Question: is offer genuine? Is 24Mb availabe?

Enter your number at the following and you can see what is currently available to you:

    http://business.digiweb.ie/linechecker/

You won't get 24, but you might get more then 2.4 if you currently on ADSL and they have now made ADSL2+ available in your area.

    nothing illegal, and no con.
    Up to 24MB is available.
They never claimed 24MB or near it was available to everyone in the area.
That you can only get a speed lower than you would like is unfortunate for you, but does not make anything a con job.

You should be well aware that any broadband service delivered over copper is distance sensitive Vs speed available.

The letter that was delivered this morning to my post box, at my address, was trying to get me to buy 24Mb .

    24Mb is not available.

    'nuff said

Garroff do you want them to print individual leaflets for every house? Sure they could include it as an address line if its addressed but it would lose all styling.

It's always an up to though what any ISP is selling. It's stupid and everyone knows this but that's the way life is. It's perfectly legal for them to say you can get up to 24mbps because that's what you are getting now, it's an "advanced broadband area".

  • Moderators, Science, Health & Environment Moderators Posts: 17,411 Mod ✭✭✭✭Gonzo

they should probably soon change the name of 'advanced broadband area' to 'basic internet area'. I am not sure anything below 30 megs should be considered broadband anymore!

Well that's the card we're dealt. I get 1-1.7mbps on an "up to 24mbps" package. The majority of the country is in the same boat.

I understand that rural BB is slow. My point is why offer 24Mb when it is NOT available

They aren't offering you 24mbps they are offering you up to that speed. It's a tier not a "this is what you'll get". Eir have up to 24mbps, up to 70mbps, up to 100mbps and up to 1000mbps.

Please: Eir does not have 5/10/15/16/21 or 24 in my area. It has 2.4Mb.
That is what it should try to sell in my area because that is what is avail.

There are probably people on your exchange getting nearly 24. Whatever about overselling, eir are definitely not going to undersell the speed that *some* people can get to keep everyone who can't get it happy.
