He is, I'd be lost without him :)

We'd all be lost without our 4 legged friends :)

Now try and get back on track with Myles exercises :)

Hopefully you'll get your mojo back soon, it's can be a struggle not being able to utilise the "release" that you know works for you...

You'll get there princess :D We're all behind you :)

Fair play AM for recognising the cloud and admitting it's there, but I hear ya, you're going through the worst of it by not being able to run that cloud away. Take each day as it comes and it's only a matter of time before you're back running again. At least the weather's improving, it'd be worse doing all that walking in the cold!

Only natural you will feel like this AM, running is such a great way to get rid of the stress of life and work and anything else that comes your way. you have been doing so well recently you just gotta take the bad days with the good days a bit like training and racing and write them off and move onto the next day. Tomorrow is always a new day. How about taking your aggression out on decluttering your wardrobe or some of those jobs you have around the house that never get done cause you are always running. Getting those summer potted flowers done in the garden so that when you look out into the garden it will give you a lift, then you can come over and do my garden for me !! ;) Keep smiling :D

This is a great idea, perhaps I should start with the 4 days of dishes sitting in the sink  a warning sign - at least I can recognise them now. Thanks A, i'll try :):)

:D:D when I read this earlier it conjured up a a mental image from my childhood of a gang of people pushing a car that wouldn't start (a real 80's thing!) a great analogy, I'm an old Toyota Starlet that needs a few new parts, or throwing on the scrap heap!! Thanks Marty, and for reminding me to get back on track with the mediation, I started off well and of course let it slide... Send me a photo of your dog!!

    Thanks R, yep, spot on.

I'm not the only one here who deals with this stuff, I doubt there's a runner in the world who hasn't known dark days or at least understands why its the best medication for whatever ails you - I'm lucky to be able to come on here and talk it out, and to have a super bunch of people who are willing to give me a push start :p onwards and upwards.

You've got some great words of wisdom there ^^^^^ from the others so I'll just send you some <<<>>> Hugs.

Keep going one day at a time and you will get through this. Remember its perfectly ok to feel like this and before you know if you'll be back out running. Get back to your exercises again and take control of building your strength up and you will get the fitness back very fast, but i doubt you'll have lost much fitness at all as your walking also will keep that going!!

I'm Always available for a chat and/or a coffee xx

A big +1 to doing something practical AM. Mrs Mc's idea seems to find some resonance with you. First thing I thought about with the suggestion is your keen interest and observations with your surroundings e.g. your early morning escapades through the park and your sharing of what you see (posted pics).

Take care and have no doubt that your post is of some benefit to others as well. Keep posting and do rest yourself.

This post will probably sound stupid, but I'll throw it out there anyway on the off-chance it helps.

For me, it's the simple routine of running that provides the most mental benefit. There's something about the repetitious nature of completing a run, ticking it off the list, and focusing on the next session that sort of distracts my brain from allowing less welcome thoughts to fester.

So when I can't run for whatever reason, I try and apply the same routine to something else. It doesn't have to be exercise - cook something this week that will take most of an evening (there's your long run), read 6-8 chapters of a book (intervals), wash the 4 days worth of dishes at a decent pace (tempo), sample two new beers you haven't tried before (recovery, of course), etc.

Write these things down, and tick them off as you get through the list - maybe even add some personal reflection like you would in a training log, for example: "Got through all the dishes, but using the Tesco washing-up liquid was a bad move. A poor substitute for Fairy".

    Maybe skip that bit actually.

But yeah, I find trying to replicate the routine of running really helps me. Sorry to hear you're under that cloud. Take care!

thanks Anne, I'll definitely take you up on that coffee, you're right about taking control of building the strength, that's why I went to Myles in the first place - I'll do them later, I really will!

Thanks Denis, I'm heading up to Lough Key inaugural parkrun on Saturday (have family in the area so kill two birds etc) with exactly this is mind, its a beautiful spot and will hopefully lift the spirits (obviously walking it :)) and spend some time with family too.

Thanks TG, that doesn't sound stupid at all, I get what you're saying. Unfortunately for me its the physical exertion / endorphin boost I get from the run that helps, walking just doesn't cut the mustard in that regard, obviously that's why I'm allowed walk (doesn't put the body under any strain) and not run. The bike will come a close second I think in that I'll get a certain amount of satisfaction from commuting / using energy but it won't strain the body anywhere as much as a run will. Am just back from the bike shop actually and the second hand bike that's coming in should hopefully be there next week so I might have it by next weekend all going well.

For the record, the dishes are washed (!) I've swept the 10 trillion cherry blossom flowers from my front porch (yeah yeah, it'll be covered again in an hour!) and as soon as I'm done with work (working from home today) I'm heading out the garden.

    Thanks guys x

    Hey FD

Sorry to read whats been goin on and the down turn in the noggin. I use running/shuffling in the same way you do and I reckon if it was taken away I'd drown :pac:

Youve got some great advice above I cant add anything to it, just one thing. I think I read youre on meds already, yeah? Are they whacking you with a high dosage? If so, have a look at the side effects on the info leaflet. See is feeling low one of the side effects and if so, speak to your gp/consultant. I know you're bound to be feeling sh*t having your hobby and pressure valve removed, but the meds could be adding to it. It happened before, where I was on meds and my anxiety levels reached monumental levels :pac: . Thought it was par for the course so said nothin and eventually read the info leaflet, spoke to my gp and he changed them. It was like being handed a cool damp face cloth on a roasting day :pac:

Other than that useless nugget, if you want company on a walk Im free Sats and Suns and Fri mornings. Would be more than happy to join you. You bring the pooch, i'll bring the sprogs :D

Well you know something HS, you're a genius! I read through the side affects again but spotted nothing, then I saw the word Malaise at the very end under 'general' and googled it - interestingly this is what it says.. I'm not going to jump to conclusions and assume its the tablets though as up to this I've been feeling grand (had awful side affects the first two weeks though). I'll talk to the specialist next week when I see her, I am apparently on the lowest possible dose though so not sure what they can do but certainly worth asking!
    malaise
    maˈleɪz/
    noun
    noun: malaise; plural noun: malaises

a general feeling of discomfort, illness, or unease whose exact cause is difficult to identify.
    "a general air of malaise"
synonyms: unhappiness, restlessness, uneasiness, unease, melancholy, depression, despondency, dejection, disquiet, trouble, anxiety, anguish, angst; More

Thanks! that kind of makes me feel a bit better if its from the meds, in an odd sort of way I can cope with that... (yeah, bonkers, I know!).

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 123 ✭✭Hannibelle Smeeeth

Ah delighted, well not delighted but glad it was of use. Maybe they can't change it. But it's an important enough side effect for them to change things if theyvcan. Doesn't sound bonkers at all.

OK, I've had a couple of beers, and my eyesight is dodgy at best, but I initially read that as you has your pleasure valve removed.... I sprayed some beer on my monitor :D:D

I really feel for you because I use physical exertion in the exact same way and it's the only medicine that does the job. Sometimes when the cloud descends and running or cycling it away is not an option, the only solution for me is to focus on remembering that it's temporary. You've been there before and you always come out the other side so this will pass too. Then I find something else to focus my mind on to act as a distraction, which is probably not the healthiest but it helps! Also, being with people... maybe call up a friend and get out for a walk with them, catch a movie, whatever. I hope it passes and you're back running soon, but take care of yourself in the mean time.

    Thursday 12th May

Had bloods done again this morning at the Surgery, will hopefully know by specialist app next Thursday whether the thyroid is continuing to come down. Was working from home for the day so no lunchtime walk. Then had to bring woody to the vets for his annual jabs - usually this is a nightmare but this year we got a female vet who did as I asked and got a muzzle straight away - everything was done and dusted in 2 mins instead of 40

Mulberry suggested I treat myself to something (why do I have to be told to do that!!) so I treated myself to a massage, the nice kind not the torturous kind although I’m sure I could have asked for harder. It was lovely, I could feel the tension ebbing away and was completely chilled and relaxed by the end. I’ll definitely go back for another.

PM 3.5 miles with the dog local loop
PM Functional movement workout 1 - did this even if not with 100% motivation.

    Friday 13th May
Slept like a baby after the massage and felt much more rested this morning, still not 100% but feeling a bit less hopeless and a bit more hopeful.
Lunch: 3.1 miles - spotted some boardies out running in the beautiful sunshine today while I was walking, lovely day
PM: 3.5 miles walk with woody
    PM: Functional movement workout 2

    Saturday 14th May
AM: 5K Lough Key parkrun in 37 mins.
Up at 6am to walk woody before heading for the wilds of Roscommon to the Lough Key inaugural parkrun. I have family in Leitrim and we spent lots of summers in that forest as kids so I was really looking forward to this. Happened to be on the phone to my doc on Friday and asked whether it might be possible to jog, very slowly, some of this run, given how I was feeling she agreed, very slowly and to walk if I felt any way tired. I had decided to jog the first bit, see how I felt and walk the middle section and then maybe jog the finish. As it happened I ended up in a lonely group of 4, two girls who were run/walking, a mother and daughter doing similar and another woman who was jogging slowly so decided to stay behind her for the duration - I felt a bit guilty as she was obviously at her max and I wasn’t breaking a sweat or even out of breath - it allowed me to take in the stunning surroundings though and I stopped and took a few photos along the way. The main thing was as slow as I was going I was jogging not walking and it felt so fantastic. Really really really enjoyed this and all the sweeter with approval. The weather was amazing, the surroundings are 2nd to none there were plenty of marshals on the course and the post run coffee was blissful. The agreement was I could jog this but then no more after that until the next bloods or I speak to the specialist. I can't explain what that was worth, no damage done, I felt fantastic afterwards too. Spent the rest of the day catching up with family & reminiscing. Good for the soul.
PM: Walk 3.5 miles local loop with the dog

    Sunday 15th May
Half considered going to Terenure to support but after yesterday's crack of dawn start, and a few beers yesterday eve I was treating myself to the lie on of the century… which meant I was awake at 6.30  the sun was streaming in the window so I got up at 7.30 and headed to the PP with the dog, did 4.5 miles from the visitors centre to the papal cross and all around the trails there with not much other than the deer for company, lovely, relaxing, peaceful until some twat turned up with a remote control airplane ruining the peace and quiet!

Gym: time to move to the next level and take things a bit farther.
Bike: 20K in 46 mins @ level 5 - the first time I’ve actually gotten some enjoyment from the stationary bike!
    Rower: 2000m in 12 mins
Swim: 30 mins - forgot the goggles so this was just laps of breaststroke, only stopped once though to work out a calf cramp so a reasonable workout.

    Sundays Tale from the Sauna…
I’ve a new sauna friend! When I went in he was speaking spanish with another girl who left shortly afterwards, my Spanish comprehension is better than my spoken Spanish so I’d a rough idea what they were talking about and of course the word ‘marathon’ is universal. Turns out he’s a runner and a local (with a very good Spanish accent!) so we got chatting, he’s broken the 3 hours and we were talking about the big mental battle that’s involved in doing that and of course the absolute horror that is a runner who can’t run :p I ended up staying far longer than I’d planned as we talked about running routes around Dublin bay (he was very impressed with my 22 miler from the PP to Sandycove and back - I neglected to tell him my LSR pace :D) I was well roasted by the time I finally left.

All in all that was a good weekend and I’m feeling far more positive than I was during the week. The weather has a lot to do with that too, as well as the phenomenal support here.

Don’t shoot me but I spotted this on Fletch’s facebook page, I was sitting on the jetty there yesterday wishing I’d brought my swimsuit….. Ooooh could I??! Kate what training would I need to do 750m?? I should probably start with the stuff you've given me already!!
