so these are tying them down for the craic then ?

No I'd say they are doing it for company / county regulations and some of those features have wheels - please take the time to read the posters (Susan Broad Driveway)post you are trying to be smart ars3 with

Those machines(tracked is what we are discussing) probably weight 15 tonnes so a chain isn't going to hold them in place if you pull any of the manoeuvres like you posted earlier as they would snap in a second - just like what happened in one of your videos(a track matchine fell of a trailer even though it was strapped!!).

It's all about correct loading on a trailer designed to take the load and driver in a safe manner, straps are a nice to have but they won't save a poorly loaded machine / aggressive manoeuvres

    Compulsory surely ?

Is there a law that says you don't have to tie-down a load if it's on tracks ?

    so it might help

Yes it's compulsory, all loads must be secured.

I remember the owner of the Micra was given a court appearance for the blue parking lights.. Now in fairness, you'd want to be some walnut to think that was a squad car.. :D

More of what I like to see, my question is are all these cars with bald tyres allowed drive home, and if they are is that not opening up the Gardaí to a massive claim if one of these cars crashes in to someone on that journey?

    Nice tyres...

Is this not very dangerous to be carrying out on the motorway? Travelling at 120km/h and then come to a sudden stop? And from observation on the Garda Twitter page it only seems to be Thurles Division doing it and only on parts of the M8 / M7.

Very smart move of them to do, the motorway would be the last place Id expect (or use to expect) a checkpoint to be carried out.

You don't come to a sudden stop. These are very well planned operations.

Specialist company cones off the road and puts advance warning signs 3-4km out. Usually a garda is stationed at the point motorway goes to one lane - this ensures emergency vehicles can use the empty lane and not get delayed.

Then about 15-20 garda and others are further along doing the checks. Anyone requiring a"chat" is brought onto hard shoulder.

When do you ever see farmers trailers with reg plates, almost never.

When do you ever see farmers pulled over for it. Almost never.

Logged on to Twitter on my phone and was able to zoom in on the picture, I can see that the cones do go far back.

So, the left lane would be used for the normal checkpoint procedures, and then into the hard shoulder if matters have to go further? And the right lane would be left clear? (As you can probably guess, Ive never had to stop on the motorway before only when stuck in traffic around the M50 or at toll bridges!)

Reg plates? I'd be happier if they had lights.

Look at the picture, there's a special area at the side of the motorway for this, off the mainline.

Much better than speed checks on the motorway anyway.

Motorway checkpoints (on the actual motorway) are the most idiotic thing I ever heard of. I don't believe this could be happening anywhere else abroad.

Yes, happens in many countries. UK has done them for years.

And why do you say idiotic? Have you seen one in operation? Somehow i doubt it, yet you make a damning statement - that's idiotic.

There's a set (and safe) procedure. I've gone through three here in past year and several in uk over the past 5 years (i drive a hell of a lot)

They operate for 3-4 hours and set up almost identical to a major roadworks scheme in terms cones and notice incuding garda cars on the approach and garda signage.

Quite impressive and usually multi agency.

But sure don't some people love to whine about anything.

There has to be a procedure for slowdowns on a motorway, for accidents etc, and the same system can serve a checkpoint.

    Debatable.

If there's a checkpoint on a national road, you would more than likely see them from a few hundred metres away, or someone would "flash" you down the road. All of this would allow you to have time to take the next turn off, pull into a driveway etc. if you were purposely avoiding one.

While on the motorway, you cannot take the next turn off nor pull into someone's driveway, you'd simply have to stay going up to it and stop. Genius idea for the Gardai.

I cant find the link but when Garda Traffic first tweeted about doing one of these operations on the motorway (Thurles Division on the M8, I believe) they caught a large amount of drivers in a short space of time (there could've been up around 20 offences, maybe more)

I presume this is a Judge Zaidan conviction, seeing as it's imprisonment for speeding?

3 months imprisonment? There has to be more to the story.

In fact its only really quite recently that I've been hearing about them here.

More than 208Kph? I doubt it.

Entirely reasonable for a dangerous driving case and there should be more imprisonment on these offences.

In the UK they catch a huge amount of people with no insurance, partly (a minor part I grant you) why they pay less for insurance in the UK. They also catch large numbers of people equipped to steal, with knives etc and organised gangs of thieves.

Being held up for a few minutes is a very small price to pay, especially when you know they're all there doing that (something worthwhile) and you can put the boot down once out of sight.

With dash cams if they don't 100% have a fully approved way of having the checkpoint on a motorway they will be exposed as gob****es and open to multi million claims on deaths.
