    Well that's what I mean. If all that time and money is spent on developing it, then surely listening to the end users opinion of it is imperative to getting it right? It would appear that users opinions are mostly disregarded, though I'm sure that's more appearance than fact - but still important.

    Any sucessful business tailors it's product for the customer. In Boards case the users provide the traffic that makes the advertising revenue come in, so they're the revenue generating customers. And the customer doesn't want these 'improvement's' from what I can see. And the bods were aware of this, and went ahead anyway. I just don't see any business sense involved in these decisions.

    I'm still on the old "--boards.ie Beta" skin from I'm guessing the early 00's. IMO way better than any of the newer changes.

    Just got this message on the beta touch site (it looks to have changed again in the last couple of hours since I accidentally switched it on this morning) -

    "Hi there, it seems that you are using the Microsoft Edge browser. Unfortunately this browser has some compatibility issues with our editor when using the Enter key.

    We are working towards a solution, in the meantime press Shift + Enter (rather than Enter) for a new line."

    Also, the editing box on the touch site is only an inch in height, and accommodates a max of five lines, so if I'm writing a post of any significant length (as I tend to do), I'll have some amount of scrolling to do. I dread the idea of quoting a post, having already seen what a mess the beta site makes of trying to read them and the amount of padding around the post that just about allows for three words per line.

    I think someone went a bit mad with the Crayola too. Every element on the page is a different colour, which doesn't make for easy readability, it just makes for a headache reminiscent of "The Scream" :(

    EDIT:
    doesn't work on the beta site of course :rolleyes:

    From what I have read Boards believe that the current layout isn't user friendly for new users & it's puts them off posting.

    Maybe we are being subjected to the classic politics trick? Tell us that we are going to get something horrible & then we won't complain when it's just bad.

    It's mad, I couldn't navigate Reddit to save my life yet I find Boards to be absolutely fine. Different strokes and all that.

    That's the vbulletin 3.x default skin,and what I still use as well. It'll be a horrible day when we are forced away from it to use the new monstrosity of an interface. I'm sure we'll get used to it though, but I really hate it.

    There's some strange missing functionality (on the touch side at least). If I search for my recent posts I get a list of posts in that large card style. The card shows some of my post, the number of views and replies to that thread (useful to devs more than me) and a link to the forum or my name at the bottom. What I can't do is go to that thread or my post in it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 24,580 ✭✭✭✭One eyed Jack

    Bloody nightmare trying to get out of the touch beta site too. I eventually ended up clearing the cache as I could find no link to any Legacy option.

    Also, the title headers and font size are far too large. I know eventually the beta site will be introduced, but I think the idea behind it is that Boards won't lose users, but that it will gain many more. They're likely right, but it's a slap in the face for it's current users that they're only given a few months to make the transition to what appears by all accounts a step backwards.

    I agree 100% G, but sadly it is my impression that of late that is being missed more and more in the quite understandable pursuit of finding a way to keep the funds flowing.

    Lots of very eloquent reasons why the new site is so bad, so I'll be brief.

    It's just an unusable fugly mess.

    Our survey says:

    is that the "white skin"
    thats what i'm using. i remember when the more modern version came out i couldn't cope with it, if this new thing actually happens for real it will put me over the top

    It's clear that the team are determined to head down this path regardless. I wish them well.

    I guess I can see what they are trying to do. But it just fails in so many functional and cosmetic areas.

    In particular, the "talk-to" hover over just makes me want to leave the site immediately. All style and no substance I'm afraid. Likely the end of boards for me.

    Yes but it is a downward spiral Wibbs. By engineering a site that visually enables more ads they will reduce the number of users making it less attractive to advertisers.

    Not Your Ornery Onager

    Form != Function

    UI means User Interface

    U means User

    Ads ?= Revenue

    BeanCount = Everything (?)

    Subscriber = Bean = €

    Mod != Sap

    .ie != die

    Fields = I remember when this was all

    Dogs in the street != Meat

    tl/dr Fields

    mtl/dr Tumbleweed

    wmtl/dr Ads → Beans → Clickthrough

    Not your ornery onager

    And if you need to have adblock off in order for the new site to function properly, not only will they lose current users, but they'll lose potential new users too.

    Any website where I can't use adblock, I avoid, and I'm definitely not the only one.

    I'm still on the blue one, no idea what the theme is called. But it is or was at that time the only one with a decent menu. All the newer sub threads are now missing from the menu, but at least I am not having to always click and click and click to find a forum.

    Blue beta is the name of the theme I was referring to, just tried the beta new... wtf, the menu is getting worse and worse, how are you meant to find anything. People will have to print a sitemap just to find their way around. I will stick with beta blue, they got the menu spot on for that theme.

    I don't like it.
    I've liked most of the new features Boards introduced over the years but I really hate the new look.
    It doesn't feel user-friendly; it's a bit confusing looking and looks nothing like the Boards we know and love.
    I feel I'm on a completely different site.

    There's a forum for (mainly) English-speakers in France that used to be the equivalent of Boards.ie until we were treated to a series of "enhanced user experience" upgrades. The latest produced a site that looked like this boards Beta, with way too much irrelevant screen padding, the loss of most of our favourite tools/features and disgruntlement all around.

    The outcome was predictable: quality conversations dropped right off and the place now is mainly a forum for trolls and spammers, with a few die-hards like myself who've used custom-CSS to "fix" the styling mistakes of the programmers (most notably stretching the useful content across the empty ad-blocked space on the right).
